Five Spaniards claiming to be NGO staff on the Greek island of Lesvos have been arrested on suspicion of migrant trafficking, Greek coastguard sources said Thursday.
„A preliminary investigation has been opened,“ a coastguard spokeswoman said, adding that the suspects were likely to be charged with „attempting to facilitate the entry of illegal migrants.“
Another coastguard source identified the suspects as Spanish.

New evidence of deaths in custody and torture collected by Amnesty International suggests that brutal repression is on the rise again in Tunisia exactly five years after the toppling of the previous authoritarian regime by the “Jasmine Revolution”, which sparked a wave of uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa.
During a visit to Tunisia in December last year, Amnesty International collected information about deaths in police custody as well as allegations of torture carried out in the course of police interrogations.
“Five years ago Tunisians rose up and threw off the shackles of authoritarianism. Torture and repression were hallmarks of former President Ben-Ali’s regime; they must not be allowed to become defining features of post-uprising Tunisia,” said Said Boumedouha, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa Programme. Turkey’s border with Syria is not the only border region in the country where people are dying[1]. Along the so-called “green border” of the European Union the last few years have witnessed a rising tide of migrants forced back into Turkey, mostly by European police forces. Today, Europe’s politicians are using Turkey as a gatekeeper. This is an old strategy, and has been ineffective so far. Europe has not been putting up the funds needed to enforce it, even if the EU has been investing in Turkish border technologies and camp facilities for some time. To understand the recent developments and their possible effect on the future, it is important to review the practice now used by the EU. Parts of the policy concept were developed by the European Stability Initiative (ESI) and introduced as the “Merkel Plan“[2]. The recent progress of the agreement has cemented the power of the Justice and Development Party (AKP)-government before the stunned eyes of its domestic opposition—even before the recent elections in Turkey were held or even before it was signed.
The European Commission has informed Greece of its decision to award €1.36 million in emergency funding for the acquisition of 90 fingerprinting devices. These devices will be used to ensure proper identification and registration of migrants at Greek border crossings. This emergency funding comes from the Internal Security Fund (ISF).
The 90 fingerprinting devices and workstations will be connected to the central EURODAC system to ensure sharing of information, and will be installed at border crossing points throughout the country, including on the Eastern Aegean islands. This will help to ensure the full and effective operation of the hotspots established on the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Leros, Kos and Samos.

Die Türkei schiebt offenbar systematisch Bürgerkriegsflüchtlinge zurück nach Syrien ab und verstößt damit gegen internationales Recht. Dies belegen Recherchen des ARD-Magazins MONITOR (heute, 21:45 Uhr im Ersten). Mehrere syrische Flüchtlinge in der Türkei berichteten dem Magazin unabhängig voneinander, sie seien zunächst von türkischen Grenzbeamten zurück nach Syrien abgeschoben worden, bevor ihnen mithilfe von Schleppern die erneute Flucht gelungen sei.
Dem ARD-Magazin liegen auch Video-Aufnahmen vor, auf denen laut der Menschenrechtsorganisation „Human Rights Watch“ hunderte syrische Bürgerkriegsflüchtlinge zu sehen sind, wie sie von der Türkei nach Syrien abgeschoben werden.

Griechenland setzt bei einer besseren Sicherung der EU-Außengrenzen auch auf die europäische Grenzschutzbehörde Frontex. Mit deren Hilfe will Athen Flüchtlinge ohne Aussicht auf Asyl künftig sofort wieder in die Türkei zurückbringen.
Dafür solle eine Route eingerichtet werden, um die Menschen mit gecharterten Booten von Lesbos und anderen griechischen Inseln aus direkt zurückzuschicken, sagte ein hoher griechischer Regierungsbeamter.

A senior Greek official has said the government will ask Europe’s border protection agency Frontex to help set up a sea deportation route to send migrants who reach the country illegally back to Turkey.
The official told AP the plan would involve chartering boats on Lesvos and other Greek islands to send back migrants who were not considered eligible for asylum in the European Union.

Abschiebungen von Deutschland nach Griechenland sind seit 2011 ausgesetzt. Den Stopp hat der Innenminister nun auf den letzten Drücker verlängert.
BERLIN taz | Auf den letzten Drücker hat Bundesinnenminister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) den Abschiebestopp nach Griechenland, der am Dienstag ausläuft, noch einmal verlängert. Dieses Mal allerdings nicht für ein ganzes Jahr, sondern nur bis zum 30. Juni. Das teilte ein Sprecher de Maizières auf Anfrage der taz mit.
De Maizière hatte in seiner ersten Amtszeit als Innenminister wegen gravierender Mängel beim Asylschutz die Abschiebungen nach Griechenland zunächst für ein Jahr ausgesetzt, danach wurde der Abschiebestopp jährlich verlängert. Seitdem werden die Asylverfahren von Flüchtlingen, die über Griechenland in die EU ein- und von dort aus weiter nach Deutschland gereist sind, in Deutschland durchgeführt.

Die Aussetzung des Dublin-Abkommens endet mit dem 12. Januar. Danach können Flüchtlinge, die über Griechenland nach Deutschland kamen, ihr Asylverfahren nicht mehr hierzulande absolvieren. Das teilt die Bundesregierung auf Anfrage eines Grünen-Bundestagsabgeordneten mit.
Am 12. Januar endet eine Ausnahmeregelung für die deutschen Asylverfahren, die Tausende Flüchtlinge betreffen und neue Unordnung in die Behördenabläufe bringen wird – was die Bundesregierung offenbar dennoch aussitzen will: Mit dem 12. Januar können Flüchtlinge, die über Griechenland nach Deutschland kommen, ihr Asylverfahren nicht mehr hierzulande absolvieren.
