At least three men have been killed and several injured, some severely, in further fighting today in Sabratha between an Islamist militia and a local anti-people smuggling force.

The shooting in the town centre  which broke out early this morning, is understood to have involved members of Ahmed Dabbashi’s Al-Amu militia. Dabbashi is a member of a prominent local family with a record of Islamist support. On the other side was the 48th Brigade of the town’s  “Operations Room Fighting IS” under its commander Omar Abdul Jalil. The brigade was formed to crack down on local people-smuggling gangs.

Auf Einladung des italienischen Verteidigungsministeriums wird General Haftar am 26. September nach Rom fahren. Das verärgert den Militärrat von Sabratha, der die Festnahme von dessen Anhängern wegen Kriegsverbrechen fordert. Seit Freitag steigt die Zahl der Boote wieder, die von der libyschen Küste ablegen – eine Antwort der Anas al-Dabbashi Miliz auf das Vorgehen Italiens.

Sabratha non ci sta e i barconi riprendono il mare. Il consiglio militare della città della Tripolitania condanna l’invito dell’Italia a Khalifa Haftar, per il quale il generale è atteso a Roma il 26 settembre per incontrare il ministro della Difesa Roberta Pinotti, e alcuni alti ufficiali dello Stato maggiore. «Denunciamo l’invito giunto specie perché la Corte penale internazionale ha chiesto ripetutamente l’arresto degli affiliati (del generale) colpevoli di aver commesso crimini di guerra», spiega in una nota il Consiglio militare di Sabratha. Questa la reazione ufficiale di Sabratha. Venerdì intanto, il Mediterraneo centrale si affollava di gommoni come non accadeva da tempo: 15 interventi di salvataggio in poche ore, cui si devono aggiungere alcuni del giorno precedente e altri di ieri: circa 1800 persone salvate nel fine settimana, con l’aiuto delle navi militari e di quelle delle poche Ong rimaste davanti al mare della Libia e il coordinamento della Guardia costiera italiana. Oltre agli «sbarchi fantasma».

Le politiche transitano sulle frontiere che si armano, si trasformano in trincee, gabbie e talvolta in cimiteri senza croci. Le frontiere fanno la storia e la storia stampa le proprie frontiere. Di parole, di carta, di fili spinati, di campi minati, di genere, di classi sociali e di religioni. Financo gli dei sono recintati nei santuari e negli ostelli per i pellegrini. Le frontiere sono là, apparentemente da sempre, come a ricordare che persino la vita è una questione di frontiere da passare. Alcune di queste, nel Sahel delle due rive, sono, non per la prima volta, chiuse.

Kaum ein Land ist so sehr von der Flüchtlingskrise betroffen wie Italien. Wegen der Abschottungspolitik des EU-Landes kamen zuletzt deutlich weniger Menschen über das Mittelmeer – doch nun steigen die Zahlen wieder an.

Innerhalb einer Woche haben die libysche und die italienische Küstenwache mehr als 5000 Flüchtlinge im Mittelmeer aufgegriffen. Der Sprecher der libyschen Marine, Ajub Kacem, erklärte, die libysche Küstenwache habe zwischen Montag und Freitag 2082 Menschen gerettet, von denen eine Frau gestorben sei, am Samstag seien es weitere 1047 Menschen gewesen.

Aus Italien gab es Berichte von Nichtregierungsorganisationen und Medien, in denen von insgesamt fast 2000 geretteten Flüchtlingen die Rede war. Die Zeitung „La Stampa“ berichtete, auf Sizilien seien 589 Migranten eingetroffen, die von einem Schiff der Hilfsorganisation „Save the Children“ gerettet worden seien.

The Italian Interior Ministry said Friday it signed an agreement with the UN-proposed Presidential Council about a European Union-funded Italian project to help Tripoli authorities control the Libyan southern borders in order to stem illegal immigrants’ influx.

The Italian news agency Aki said Friday that the agreement will aim to send a mission in order to build a logistic basis for the activities of Libya’s border guards and to allow secured UN organizations presence in the region.

The Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti and defense, interior and foreign ministries’ delegates from Libya were present in the signing ceremony, Aki added, saying the agreement is based on the Libyan-Italian MoU.

The Libyan Coastguard today said it had arrested more than a thousand migrants off the coast.

Eight craft carrying 1,074 people were intercepted at sea near Sabratha. The occupants were detained and sent to a migrant detention camp in Zawia.

The action by the coastguard appears to be part of a wider clampdown on migrant departures to Europe from Libya. There have been claims that this has been inspired by Italian payments that are actually going to the militias which control the activities of people-smugglers.

Moreover, there are unconfirmed reports that some elements within the coastguard are in cahoots with the people smugglers. Thus, would-be migrants who have paid for their passage to Europe, are launched from Libyan beaches and shortly thereafter stopped Libyan naval patrols.

NGOs haben über 1.000 Boat People 30 bis 50 Meilen vor der libyschen Küste gerettet und nach Sizilien gebracht. Auch Schiffe der Marine waren im Rahmen der Operation Sophia an den Einsätzen beteiligt. Die Migrant*innen kamen vor allem aus Marokko, Nigeria, Kamerun, Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Mali und Syrien. Sie berichteten von Folter und Misshandlungen in Libyen.

Poi, venerdì, il Mediterraneo centrale si è nuovamente affollato di gommoni e barchini come non accadeva da tempo: 15 interventi di salvataggio in poche ore, cui si devono aggiungere alcuni del giorno precedente e altri di ieri: circa 1800 persone salvate nel fine settimana, con l’aiuto delle navi militari e di quelle delle poche Ong rimaste davanti al mare della Libia e il coordinamento della Guardia costiera italiana. A questi, si devono aggiungere i migranti degli «sbarchi fantasma» sulle coste dell’Agrigentino e pure a Lampedusa, poco meno di duecento solo negli ultimi giorni.

About 100,000 people have arrived on Italian shores this year, after making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Libya.

They are joining many thousands more asylum seekers and migrants already in the country – many stuck there after other European countries closed their borders.

About 450 of them can be found in the Fenoglio camp, outside Turin, which is run by the Italian Red Cross.

It is supposed to be a transit camp, from where migrants are quickly transferred to reception centres – but the logjam in the system means many end up spending months here.

CASERTA, Italy – “Kalifoo ground is like a supermarket: Masters pass by and choose the workers,” said Osman, a 33-year-old undocumented migrant in Italy.

Most of the African migrants at the Ex Canapificio social center in Caserta, in southwestern Italy, refer to the places they gather to find work as “kalifoo ground” – slave squares– and their employers as masters.

Kalifoo, meaning “slaves,” is the Libyan word for day-workers. When migrants from Ghana arrived in this part of Italy 20 years ago, local working conditions reminded them of Libya.
