BRUSSELS — Migrants heading to Italy from Libya in leaky boats and inflatable dinghies have broken an annual arrivals record, Italian authorities said this week, underscoring the rising popularity of an increasingly deadly journey that nowadays aims not for land, but for a frigid mid-sea rescue.

The number of boat migrants reaching Italy from North Africa this year surpassed 171,000, topping the previous record of 170,100, set in 2014, the Italian Interior Ministry said Monday. But 2016 is also the most lethal year for those trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. So far, 4,690 people have died en route, compared with 3,777 deaths for all of last year, according to the U.N. refugee agency.

Die italienische Küstenwache hat etwa 1.400 Flüchtlinge vor der Küste Libyens aus dem Mittelmeer gerettet.

Die meisten von ihnen seien in überfüllten Schlauchbooten zur Überfahrt nach Italien aufgebrochen, teilte die Küstenwache mit. An der Rettungsaktion hätten sich auch die irische Marine, zwei Handelsschiffe sowie ein Boot von Hilfsorganisationen beteiligt.

Damit erreichten seit Jahresbeginn bereits mehr als 171.000 Bootsflüchtlinge Italien. Nach UNO-Angaben kamen im selben Zeitraum mindestens 4.690 Menschen bei der Überfahrt ums Leben.

More asylum seekers have now reached Italy by boat in 2016 than in any previous year on record.

Nearly 171,000 people have arrived in Italy from north Africa since the start of the year, according to statistics compiled by the UN refugee agency and the Italian government. As of Monday, the total had surpassed the previous record of 170,000, set in 2014.

Bleibt im Boot! Bleibt im Boot! Ihr seid in Sicherheit, wir retten euch alle!“ Die italienische Rettungsmannschaft ist nicht mehr weit von dem schwankenden Schlauchboot der Flüchtlinge entfernt. Verängstigt warten die Menschen auf Hilfe. Wohl aus Panik, das Boot der Küstenwache könne wieder abdrehen, springt einer von ihnen trotz der lauten Warnrufe der Helfer ins Meer. Schnell schwimmt ein Rettungsschwimmer hinterher und zieht ihn aus den Wellen. Nach der langen Fahrt über das Mittelmeer sind die meisten Flüchtlinge körperlich geschwächt, manche verletzt. Allein schaffen es die wenigsten, ins große Boot zu klettern. Ihnen Rettungsringe oder -westen zuzuwerfen, wie es andere Schiffe machen, ist keine gute Idee, erklärt Alessandro Morella, Kommandant der italienischen Küstenwache, den Besuchern aus Deutschland.

Libyen ist durch den Bürgerkrieg stärker zerrüttet als irgendein anderes Maghreb-Land. Trotzdem will die EU Flüchtlinge dorthin zurückschicken.

ROM/BRÜSSEL taz | Eigentlich ist Manlio Scopigno kein Seemann. Der Brigadegeneral kommandierte Fallschirmregimenter. Italien entsandte ihn nach Somalia, Bosnien, Kosovo, Mazedonien, Libanon. Heute befehligt Scopigno die größte Seestreitmacht der EU: Die Militärmission Eunavfor Med, auch genannt „Operation Sophia“, die vor Libyens Küsten kreuzt, wo dieses Jahr schon über 4.600 Flüchtlinge auf dem Weg nach Europa ertrunken sind. Eunavfor Med steht für European Union Naval Force – Mediterranean: EU-Marineverband für das Mittelmeer. „Sophia“ soll den humanitären Aspekt unterstreichen und steht für das Flüchtlingskind Sophia, das an Bord der Fregatte „Schleswig-Holstein“ geboren wurde.

Sono morti tra l’odore del ferro delle rotaie calde, in una frenata improvvisa ma inutile, nel buio pesto tra cime bianche di neve e il freddo autunnale, umido e piovigginoso. Maledetta terra ricca e indifferente, composta e solitaria. È morto così A., un ragazzo eritreo minorenne, uno dei tanti invisibili arrivati nella terra di confine, Bolzano, dopo un viaggio pericoloso ed estenuante, attraverso un deserto e un mare, Mare Nostrum, che ha inghiottito anche le terre emerse per la quantità di morti, senza nome, che ancora gridano di dolore tra le sue acque. E’ morta così A., una donna di cui non sappiamo (e forse mai scopriremo) nome, né età, né paese d’origine, né religione, ma di cui possiamo intuire i desideri.

De notre envoyée spéciale.– Dans la vallée de la Roya, proche de la frontière italienne, certains habitants ont pris l’habitude de toujours avoir un peu de nourriture dans leur voiture. Pour aider, au cas où ils croiseraient sur la route des migrants affamés après une nuit de marche depuis Vintimille (Italie). Depuis la fermeture de la route des Balkans, en février 2016, cette vallée des Alpes-Maritimes se retrouve à l’avant-poste du flux migratoire. Chaque mois des centaines de migrants y passent, pour la plupart érythréens et soudanais. « Ils arrivent dans la nuit en tongs, les pieds ensanglantés, transis de froid », explique Richard, 61 ans, fresquiste à Saorge, un village perché dans la vallée.

African migrants living in squalid tent camps are being paid derisory wages while turning huge profits for gang masters in the olive groves of western Sicily

You can smell the camp before you see it. The stench of rank sewage cuts through the crisp morning air in this quiet corner of western Sicily. From a distance it looks like an open-air dump, festering amid the olive groves. Men emerge from flimsy tents pitched amid piles of rubbish and ramshackle huts made of cardboard and plastic sheets.

This makeshift and filthy encampment is home to 1,200 people. All African refugees and migrants, they are desperately competing for the opportunity to work long hours in the fields as illegal agricultural workers for paltry, exploitative wages. It is autumn in Sicily. There is olive oil to be made.

Numerosi salvataggi di migranti nel Canale di Sicilia. In poche ore sono almeno sette quelli coordinati dalla Guardia costiera e che hanno visto impegnate anche le unita‘ navali di varie Ong. Un migliaio le persone in salvo. Le navi del Moas, riferisce l’organizzazione umanitaria, hanno soccorso 500 immigrati al largo della Libia. Nelle stesse ore ‚Vos Hestia‘ di Save the children ha salvato oltre 400 persone, tra cui molti bambini, stipate su una barca in legno in difficolta‘: ‚Ora sono al sicuro sulla nostra nave‘, assicura la Ong. .

Exclusive: Private post from account of ‘Medhanie Yehdego’ adds to doubts over case against Eritrean in custody in Sicily

A man believed to be one of the world’s most wanted people smugglers, whom British police claimed to have helped to arrest and extradite to Italy, seems to have said this week that he remains at large and that an innocent man was seized and extradited in his place.

In private messages sent from his Facebook account and later seen by the Guardian, Medhanie Yehdego Mered said that another Eritrean man facing trial on Tuesday in Sicily, accused of being Mered, is in fact the victim of mistaken identity.
