„[…] In dem Dokument, das aus dem Bestand des Whistleblowers Edward Snowden stammt, berichtet die NSA, dass die Geheimdienstführung 2003 beschlossen habe, das Personal in Deutschland zu verstärken. Eine Gruppe von Analysten habe damit begonnen, nach Informationen über Terrorgruppen in Nordafrika zu suchen.

Die von Deutschland aus erlangten nachrichtendienstlichen Erkenntnisse seien „für die Festnahme oder Tötung von mehr als 40 Terroristen verantwortlich“, heißt es in dem Bericht der NSA vom Januar 2005. Diie Informationen hätten zum Erfolg des weltweiten „Kriegs gegen den Terror“ und der US-Politik in Afrika beigetragen.

„Lauft!“, brüllt es hinter mir, die helle Stimme eines jungen Mannes, eines halben Kindes noch, „lauft!“, und ich beginne zu laufen, ohne in der Dämmerung viel zu sehen, ich renne den Pfad hinunter, in einer langen Reihe mit den anderen. Ich renne, so schnell ich kann, sehe auf meine Füße, die mal auf Erde aufsetzen, dann auf Stein. „Ihr Hurensöhne!“, schreit einer der Jungen, die uns eben aus den Minibussen gejagt haben und jetzt neben uns herrennen, uns antreiben wie ein Hirte sein Vieh. Er schlägt mit einem Stock auf uns ein, auf unsere Rücken, die Beine. Er packt mich am Arm, reißt mich fluchend voran. Wir sind 59 Männer, Frauen und Kinder, ganze Familien, die Rucksäcke geschultert, die Koffer in den Händen, und rennen an einer Fabrikmauer entlang, irgendwo am Rande eines Industriegebiets im ägyptischen Alexandria.

‚EU must assist Italy in this vital life-saving operation‘

„Two global human rights organizations on Thursday called on the European Union to support Italy’s Mare Nostrum Our Seas search and rescue operation of migrants at sea. “EU interior ministers should give financial and material support to Italy’s vital efforts to save the lives of migrants at sea, because without collective EU action, this summer could become the season of mass drownings in the Mediterranean“, Human Rights Watch HRW warned a meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg.

[…] Nicolas Beger, head of the EU office of Amnesty International: “Member States should commit to increasing search and rescue operations in order to guarantee the sustainability of this vital humanitarian intervention. Today’s council is a decisive opportunity for member States to make this commitment“, said Berger, adding that with the exception of Italy, most EU members are focused instead on “preventing immigration“.“

Die EU-Innenminister werden in dieser Woche zu diesem Dokument beraten, das das zentrale Mittelmeer (zwischen Libyen und Italien) zum Schwerpunkt hat: EUBAM, Frontex, EUROSUR, IOM, ICMPD und Mare Nostrum sind in Stellung gegangen, um eine militarisierte Flüchtlingspolitik der EU im Mittelmeer und in Nordafrika durchzusetzen. Das libysche Restmilitär hat in den Task Force Mediterranean Plänen eine Pilotfunktion inne, während sich die anderen nordafrikanischen Staaten zögerlich und widersprüchlich verhalten. – Zeitgleich zu den EU-Beratungen zu diesem Dokument wird der March for Freedom in Luxemburg sein.

There has been a significant rise in the numbers of migrants reaching Europe in recent months, the BBC has learned.

The number of people attempting the dangerous sea crossing from North Africa to Italy has risen sharply, says to Frontex, the EU border agency. From January to April, 42,000 migrants were detected on these routes, with 25,650 of these crossing from Libya. Combined with seven other less busy routes, the total figure for this year is probably now about 60,000. On Wednesday, the Italian government said the number of migrants reaching its shores had soared to more than 39,000. The total for 2014 so far is more than the equivalent period in 2011, the year of the Arab Spring, which eventually saw the arrival of 140,000 illegal migrants.

Superstite dell’ultima strage di migranti: „In 300 sul barcone senza salvagente“

Una settimana dopo l’arrivo della fregata Grecale a Catania, con i 17 cadaveri e i 209 superstiti, regna ancora il silenzio sui funerali per i migranti morti nel barcone affondato a largo delle coste libiche.  Per la Comunità islamica siciliana e per la Comunità siro palestinese “significa chiudere l’ennesima tragedia come se nulla fosse successo”. Il numero dei dispersi, secondo la testimonianza di un superstite eritreo, sarebbe di 249 persone, tra cui molti bambini. Il suo nome è Idris che, grazie all’aiuto dell’interprete e attivista Nawal Sofie, è riuscito a ricongiungersi con la moglie.

Il canale di Sicilia, dove oggi è avvenuta l’ennesima tragedia del mare, è una tomba per migliaia di migranti, vittime quasi sempre senza nome in fuga dal loro Paese per cercare in Europa un futuro migliore. Il 2011 è stato l’anno più tragico: almeno 1.800 persone scomparse, tra morti e dispersi.

Rendering assistance is a legal obligation

Thousands of migrants die on the sea but it’s not just because of their rickety boats – merchant vessels fail to assist them due to the difficulties of discharging them, according to a maritime expert.
Captain Wolf-Peter Rabitz said it could take days for the migrants to be allowed to disembark and the legal consequences could last several years.
