Reports that the border with Niger and Chad has been closed today by an independent force from Qatrun have been partially confirmed by a usually reliable Tebu source.

According to Fezzan Libya Org, the force consisting of army regulars, volunteers and revolutionaries from Qatrun, some 240 kilometres south of Sebha, closed the entire southern border. Confirming the closure, the Tebu source, however, says that the force is led by Barka Shedemi, who is normally based in northern Niger. The source said that Shedemi announced today that he was now blockading the border to end people-smuggling from Niger into Libya.

Update: The UN Mission in Libya denied reports of sending peacekeepers to Tripoli, and confirmed it respects the country’s sovereignty

UN is preparing to deploy 250 peacekeepers to Libya in an aim to guard its base in the capital Tripoli as part of a plan to return its support mission’s operations to the country, the Head of the UNSMIL, Ghassan Salame said on Friday.

Salame told the Italian newspaper La Stampa that about 250 peacekeepers can be deployed in the coming weeks in Tripoli.

Neuf candidats à l’émigration clandestine ont été arrêtés, avant-hier, par les gendarmes de la brigade d’El Ançor au niveau de la plage des Andalouses. Les jeunes s’apprêtaient à rallier clandestinement les côtes espagnoles lorsqu’ils ont été repérés par les gendarmes. Une enquête a été ouverte afin d’identifier d’éventuels complices dans cette affaire de tentative d’émigration clandestine. En début de semaine, une autre tentative d’embarquement clandestin a été avortée au large de Mostaganem et 15 candidats à l’émigration clandestine ont été appréhendés. Quelques mois, auparavant, les éléments du groupement de la gendarmerie d’Oran avaient, neutralisé un réseau de 18 personnes, impliqués dans l’organisation d’opérations d’émigration clandestine. Les gendarmes ont récupéré 3 véhicules légers, un camion ainsi que plusieurs moteurs et des jerricans de carburants.

En 2016, le phénomène a connu une ampleur alarmante, comme en témoignent les dizaines de tentatives mises en échec. Plus de 760 harraga avaient été interceptés au niveau des plages de l’ouest du pays par les forces navales de la façade maritime ouest.

Die Vereinten Nationen haben scharfe Kritik an der europäischen Flüchtlingspolitik geübt. Bei der Zusammenarbeit mit afrikanischen Staaten zur Eindämmung der Zuwanderung würden die Menschenrechte zu wenig berücksichtigt.

Der UN-Hochkommissar für Menschenrechte, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, hat das zwischen europäischen und afrikanischen Staaten getroffene Abkommen zur Flüchtlingspolitik kritisiert. Es sei „sehr dünn mit Blick auf den Schutz von Menschenrechten von Flüchtlingen in Libyen und auf den Flüchtlingsbooten“, schrieb Al-Hussein (Artikelbild) in einem von den Vereinten Nationen veröffentlichten Beitrag.

Das Abkommen schweige sogar „zu der dringenden Notwendigkeit, Alternativen zu der willkürlichen Internierung hilfsbedürftiger Menschen“ zu finden. „Die Erinnerung ist kurz, wenn die Fakten unangenehm sind“, erklärte der Top-Diplomat mit Blick auf einen Bericht zu den unmenschlichen Zuständen für Flüchtlinge in den Internierungszentren in Libyen, den die Vereinten Nationen bereits im Dezember vergangenen Jahres veröffentlicht hatten. Seitdem habe sich die Lage noch verschlimmert, erklärte Zeid weiter.

The Spokesman of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos forces and the UN-proposed government’s Defense Ministry, Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Ghasri, has revealed that there could be some sort of military operation by NATO in Libya.

Speaking to Alnabaa TV, Al-Ghasri said Tuesday that the current surveillance operation that NATO had started in Libya will be followed by military operations, adding that the whole process will be in coordination with the UN-proposed Presidential Council and Defense Ministry.

While the notion of refugees typically brings to mind forced migrants living in camps or certain neighborhoods designated by the receiving government, the situation in Turkey is quite different in that urban refugees predominate. Turkey had granted temporary protection status to more than 3.1 million Syrians as of July 2017—all arriving since April 2011. Fewer than 8 percent (about 235,000) live in camps, while the rest are scattered across the country, mostly in urban centers, living side-by-side with the local population. Istanbul, home to more than 522,000 registered Syrian refugees, is the Turkish province with the largest number of refugees.

Deterrence no matter what – Europe escalates its War on Migrants

Exactly two years ago, thousands of travellers opened the Balkan corridor by launching the ‘March of Hope’. Enacting their freedom to move, they crossed several borders, reached their desired places of arrival, and thereby broke the European border regime during this historic summer of migration. We as the Alarm Phone worked around the clock to support those crossing into Europe by boat from Turkey, Libya, Morocco and elsewhere. Many others assisted along the Balkan route, and the new brochure by Moving Europe – ‘Still Moving Europe, Resistance along the Balkan Route’ – gives an account of that extraordinary time.[1] Also in response to these unauthorised movements, the EU and member states have sought to establish ever-more violent obstacles, and following the EU-Turkey deal of March 2016, they have focused their energies even more on Libya. The drastic consequences are currently becoming more visible than ever before.

Un business da 35 miliardi di dollari. L’analisi del “listino prezzi” dei viaggi può anticipare rotte e intensità dei flussi migratori

Trentacinque miliardi di dollari l’anno. Per giro d’affari, il traffico di persone è dietro solo a quello di armi e droghe. Di certo una parte notevole di questi proventi è generata in Africa. Dalla Nigeria, ai paesi della costa occidentale, passando per la striscia del Sahel, fino alla regione del Corno d’Africa: i sogni di fuga di centinaia di migliaia di persone incontrano i “servizi” offerti dai trafficanti. Poi c’è la rotta del Mediterraneo centrale, e gli sbarchi in Italia, quest’anno ai massimi storici.

L’industria è dunque potente, organizzata, e ramificata. Per combatterla è utile studiarne i meccanismi di funzionamento interni. Per esempio, le dinamiche dei prezzi, cioè le somme chieste dai trafficanti per il viaggio, oltre al luogo e la tempistica con cui i pagamenti sono effettuati. Informazioni potenzialmente decisive per anticipare le rotte e l’intensità dei flussi migratori.
