About 2,200 migrants were plucked to safety in the central Mediterranean in 21 rescue missions on Monday and 16 bodies were recovered, the Italian Coast Guard said.
A statement said Coast Guard ships as well as fishing boats, merchant ships and vessels from humanitarian organizations took part in the separate operations under direction of the Coast Guard command in Rome.

PARIS/VALLETTA afp/dpa/ap | Beim Absturz eines Aufklärungsflugzeugs des französischen Verteidigungsministeriums auf dem Weg von Malta nach Misrata in Libyen sind am Montag morgen fünf Franzosen ums Leben gekommen. Die Kleinmaschine der luxemburgischen Firma CAE Aviation sei gegen 7.20 Uhr kurz nach dem Start auf Maltas internationalem Flughafen nahe der Startbahn abgestürzt, erklärte Maltas Regierung.
Den Angaben des Ministeriums zufolge war er Teil einer Operation, in deren Rahmen seit fünf Monaten die Routen illegalen „Handels aller Arten, einschließlich Menschen- und Drogenschmuggels“, verfolgt werden. Frankreichs Verteidigungsministerium bestätigte zudem, drei der Toten seien seine Mitarbeiter gewesen. Es seien aber „nicht alles Militärs“ gewesen, hieß es.

EU-Kooperation mit der Libyschen Küstenwache: Sea-Watch legt Beweise zum Übergriff auf eine Rettungsaktion vor, bei dem mehrere Flüchtende ertranken.
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
am heutigen Montag beginnt die EU Militärmission Sophia mit der Ausbildung der Libyschen Küstenwache. Diese Kooperation ist nicht unumstritten. Zahlreiche NGOs, darunter Amnesty international, berichteten immer wieder über Menschenrechtsverletzungen Seitens der Libyschen Küstenwache.
In der Nacht zu Freitag (21.10.2016) kam es nun zu einem Übergriff der Libyschen Küstenwache auf eine unserer Rettungsaktionen, in dessen Folge bis zu 30 Flüchtende ertranken. Ein Schnellboot der Libyschen Küstenwache hatte zunächst die Rettungsaktion in internationalen Gewässern, mit der unser Schiff Sea-Watch 2 von der Rettungsleitstelle in Rom beauftragt worden war, behindert und anschließend eine Paniksituation verursacht in deren Folge fast alle der ca. 150 Insassen ins Wasser fielen und viele dabei ertranken.

Libya has arrested more than 100 refugees following an incident where the coast guard attacked their boat off the coast in the Mediterranean Sea.
The department of maritime affairs in the port of Tripoli said 112 refugees were arrested on Saturday.
Some of the detainees were sighted by reporters on the ground at the port. Some appeared to have sustained minor injuries during the events on Friday. Others seemed to be suffering from fatigue and exhaustion. Weiterlesen »

An intervention by a speedboat, labelled as Libyan Coast Guard, during one of today’s rescue operation caused several deaths today in the Central Med, 14nm off Libya. During our first-aid delivery for a rubber boat with approximately 150 migrants on board, a Libyan Coast Guard vessel arrived and attacked the refugees, entering the rubber boat and hitting them with sticks. Our two speed boats were furthermore beset aggressively, preventing our crew from further providing life vests and medical aid to the people in need. The violent intervention of the Libyan Coast Guard caused a situation of mass panic on board the rubber boat in distress, in the cause one tube of the rubber boat collapsed, causing the majority of the 150 people to slip into the water. Our crew immediately tried to rescue as many as possible but a binary number of people could not be saved. 4 bodies were recovered onto the Sea-Watch 2, another 4 unconscious people are currently receiving medical treatment. 120 refugees could be rescued aboard our vessel.
This latest incident of alleged Libyan official units endangered not only the crew of rescue volunteers but moreover caused the death of many migrants. By now it is very unclear why Libyan Coast Guard engaged the way it did. Sea-Watch calls for an immediate and detailed solution of this violation of humanitarian law.
The crew of the Sea-Watch 2 is presently still engaged in rescue operations of multiple refugee boats in distress, all staff is working at capacity. Additional information is being assessed and will be provided in the cause of the day.

Salvamento Marítimo ha rescatado a los 52 inmigrantes de origen subsahariano, en aparente buen estado de salud, que viajaban a bordo de una patera que ha sido localizada a 13 millas al suroeste de la Isla de Alborán.
La infraembarcación ha sido localizada a las 17,50 horas de este lunes por el helicóptero Helimer 209, según han informado a Europa Press fuentes del organismo dependiente del Ministerio de Fomento.

Waves 2.5 metres high, winds of 50 kilometres an hour and a sinking dinghy – rescuers described today a race into Libyan waters to save 113 migrants, with 15 others lost to the raging sea.
The white rubber dinghy had set off yesterday from Sabrata, taking advantage of a break in the bad weather to make a bid for Italy’s shores, but the 130 or so people aboard soon ran into trouble when the wind whipped up.
„It became hellish“, said AFP photographer Aris Messinis, who is aboard the Astral, a vessel chartered by Spanish humanitarian NGO, Proactiva Open Arms, which patrols the area looking for boats in distress.

210 inmigrantes han muerto en ruta a España, más que en todo 2015
La marea humana de refugiados llamando a las puertas de Europa, las hasta 10.000 personas que llegaban a la isla griega de Lesbos cada día, la fotografía de la vergüenza del pequeño Aylan Kurdi muerto sobre la orilla… El drama protagonizado por los exiliados sirios que huyen de la guerra ha vuelto la mirada de los europeos hacia el este, hacia la frontera oriental del club de los privilegiados que es la Unión Europea.
No es para menos. Sólo en un año, el de 2015, se calcula que murieron en el Mediterráneo, en esa huida desesperada de la guerra y el hambre, cerca de 4.000 personas, la mayoría refugiados del desastre sirio.

Quatorze candidats à l’émigration clandestine dont un mineur ont été interceptés, hier, à 20 km, au nord de Aïn El Turck (Oran) par les gardes-côtes. Les clandestins, à bord d’une embarcation de fortune, tentaient de rejoindre l’autre rive de la Méditerranée lorsqu’ils ont été repérés par une patrouille des gardes-côtes. Les harraga‘ ont été reconduits au port et remis aux services de la gendarmerie. Avant-hier, un groupe de 16 candidats à l’émigration clandestine ont été interceptés à 40 km, au nord de Cap Falcon. Depuis le 1er octobre, plusieurs tentatives d’émigration clandestine ont été déjouées par les forces navales, au large d’Oran, de Mostaganem et de Béni-Saf. En une seule journée, les unités d’intervention avaient, pour rappel, intercepté 85 harraga‘ à bord de 5 embarcations dont 4, au large d’Oran.

Ein Flüchtlingsboot mit mehr als einhundert Menschen an Bord ist nordwestlich der griechischen Insel Milos entdeckt worden.
Wie der Fernsehsender Skai berichtete, wurde das Schiff von der griechischen Küstenwache in den Hafen geschleppt. Erst gestern war ein Flüchtlingsboot vor der Halbinsel Peloponnes aufgetaucht. Beide Orte liegen weit abseits der üblichen Route von der Türkei zu den griechischen Inseln der Ostägäis.
Die Behörden vermuten, dass es sich dabei um Menschen aus Nordafrika handelt, die nach Italien übersetzen wollen.
