Two German businessmen are on a daring mission to save migrants from drowning in the Mediterranean

Back then, Höppner and Kuhnt decided to raise awareness about another, even more deadly barrier: the Mediterranean Sea. „We realized that only hundreds of miles away from Germany, we are in the process of erecting a new and similar border. Last year alone, more people died along E.U. borders than during the 27 years the Berlin Wall separated Germany,“ Kuhnt told The Washington Post. Human rights organization have repeatedly claimed that the European Union does not do enough to rescue refugees in distress.

Die größte Delegation auf dem diesjährigen Weltsozialforum waren die Algerier, die einheitlich mit nationalgrünen Käppis auftraten: Sie proklamierten das Fracking, gegen das es in Südalgerien große Protestbewegungen gibt, und attackierten marokkanische Gruppen. Beim vorangegangenen WSF hatten die algerische Grenzer die Ausreise der algerischen Delegation verhindert, die sich damals aus Menschenrechtsgruppen und oppositionellen GewerkschafterInnen zusammensetzte. Auch damals hatte es Auseinandersetzungen zwischen algerischen und marokkanischen TeilnehmerInnen wegen der Westsahara-Frage gegeben, die allerdings nicht derart regierungsgesteuert waren wie dieses Mal.

For at least twenty years, the migration issue in Greece is an issue which has been permanently coming to the forefront in different guises, taking up a central spot in public discussions. Those discussions are mostly dominated by distorted notions, while true facts are obscured, as migration is an issue that is instrumentalised by politics and exploited by the media. The actions of the main representatives of mass media and systematic interventions by the extreme right have led to the creation of social myths and at times even of situations of “moral panic”, which makes it more and more difficult to comprehend the phenomenon’s complexity and of course address it in a sober manner.

In the first quarter of 2015, nearly 500 migrants have drowned, ten times as many as in the same period of 2014, leading to fears of a record death rate this year

A record number of migrants will drown in the Mediterranean this year if the current death rate remains unchecked, after 10 times as many migrants lost their lives during the first three months of 2015 as during the equivalent period in 2014.

At least 486 asylum seekers have drowned in the Mediterranean since the start of the year, compared with 46 in the first three months of 2014, according to preliminary figures supplied to the Guardian by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The death toll has risen sharply even though the number of migrants arriving in Europe by sea has remained roughly the same. It suggests that the EU’s decision not to create a like-for-like replacement of Mare Nostrum, a full-scale Italian rescue operation that folded last October, has neither curbed the number of attempts to cross the sea, nor fatalities along the way.

Nach der Einstellung des Rettungsprogramms Mare Nostrum wird in diesem Jahr ein Anstieg der Zahl der Flüchtlinge, die in Seenot umkommen, erwartet

In diesem Jahr sind bereits 486 Personen auf der Flucht im Mittelmeer ertrunken, so die jüngsten Zahlen der International Organisation for Migration (IOM). In den ersten drei Monaten des vergangenen Jahres waren es etwa 10 mal weniger: 46. Da der Flüchtlingsstrom in den nächsten Monaten eher zunehmen wird, befürchtet die Organisation, dass die Todeszahlen am Ende des Jahres 2015 noch höher ausfallen als im vergangenen Jahr, das mit 3.419 Toten bereits einen Rekord markierte.

Unos doscientos inmigrantes de origen subsahariano han intentado sin éxito aproximarse a la valla de Melilla, un objetivo que, finalmente, no ha logrado ninguno de ellos.

Según ha informado a los periodistas el delegado del Gobierno, Abdelmalik El Gobierno, el grupo fue avistado sobre las 02.00 horas cuando se dirigía hacia el perímetro fronterizo, motivo por el que, como es habitual, se ha activado el protocolo antiintrusión.

L’Italie annule 25 millions d’euros de la dette tunisienne

Le ministre Italien des Affaires Etrangères Paolo Gentiloni a annoncé, mardi, que son pays a décidé d’annuler 25 millions d’euros de la dette tunisienne.

« Au cours des derniers jours, nous sommes parvenus à un accord pour l’annulation d’une partie de la dette tunisienne de l’ordre de 25 millions d’euros », a précisé le responsable italien dans une déclaration à la télévision gouvernementale italienne.

In sostanza, «lavorare per la pace», «istituire un canale umanitario», più che concentrarsi «sulla tutela dei confini», sono per il rappresentante dell’Alto Commissariato Onu per i rifugiati, le azioni politiche su cui Bruxelles dovrebbe orientarsi. Altrimenti si continuerà a «fare scelte sbagliate» aggiunge Sami, a crearsi alibi, «a non cercare una strategia comune per l’asilo». Il che significa non risolvere il problema. […]“
