Saluera-t-il la démarche altruiste de cette grande dame dont le hasard de l’existence l’amena dans les Hauts-Plateaux algériens des Aurès, puis la conduisit à réagir aux tristes réalités de l’inhumanité de la guerre contre- révolutionnaire ? Ce serait un pas de plus du président français dans la reconnaissance des ravages de la colonisation.

Germaine Tillion a poursuivi des études d’ethnologie qui l’amenèrent à s’intéresser aux Aurès à la fin des années 1930.

Almost 1,200 migrants – some crammed onto overcrowded inflatable dinghies – have been picked up by Greek authorities in the eastern Aegean Sea in the past two days.

Packed boats were being towed on to the shores of Kos yesterday, with refugees dropping to their knees to pray after completing the perilous journey.

Rome (AFP) – Nawal Soufi is never without her mobile phone and thousands of Syrian refugees have reason to be grateful for that.

It was an early morning in the summer of 2013 when the fragile-seeming Sicilian 27-year-old took the first panicked call: hundreds of Syrians were lost in the Mediterranean aboard a boat taking on water.

Caught unawares, she called the Italian coastguard, who quickly explained how she, a fluent Arabic speaker thanks to her Moroccan heritage, could tell the terrified migrants how to find their GPS coordinates on their satellite phone and ensure they could be rescued.

Five African migrants drown in Egypt boat raid

„Cairo (AFP) – Five African migrants drowned on Monday after jumping into the Mediterranean as Egyptian coastguards raided a boat heading towards Italy, security officials said.

Twenty-five people, including the owner and crew of the vessel, were arrested after the raid on the boat near the city of Kafr al-Sheikh.

The nationalities of the dead have not yet been confirmed, the officials said.

The incident comes two days after the bodies of five Tunisian migrants trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa were recovered from the sea, while 49 others were rescued off the coast of Tunisia. […]“

Frontex expands its Joint Operation Triton

Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri signed the amended operational plan of the Joint Operation Triton, expanding its operational area and bringing in a number of additional experts, vessels and aircraft.

The operational area will be extended to 138 NM south of Sicily. During the peak summer season, Triton will deploy 3 airplanes, 6 Offshore Patrol Vessels, 12 patrol boats, 2 helicopters, 9 debriefing and 6 screening teams.
