A large number of migrants and refugees broke through police lines in the northern Greek village of Idomeni, Sunday, in an attempt to cross the border into Macedonia. They were eventually stopped by Macedonian police who pushed the group back to the Greek side of the border.

Schon 6000 Personen steckten in Griechenland an der Grenze fest, seitdem Mazedonien nur noch Iraker, Syrer und Afghanen über die Grenze lässt. Nun steht Athen vor einem kaum lösbaren Problem.
Sieben Grenzen muss ein Flüchtling oder Migrant auf dem Weg von der Türkei nach Deutschland übertreten, was die sogenannte Balkanroute über Griechenland, Mazedonien, Serbien, Kroatien, Slowenien und Österreich sehr störungsanfällig macht.
Als unlängst die griechischen Fährbetriebe streikten, standen Lesbos und andere ostägäische Inseln vor noch größeren Schwierigkeiten als ohnehin schon seit Monaten, weil zwar weiterhin Tausende Migranten Tag für Tag aus der Türkei ankamen, aber nicht mehr nach Athen weiterreisen konnten. Als der Streik nach vier Tagen endete, mussten bald darauf mehr als 10.000 Migranten in dem Ort Idomeni an Griechenlands Grenze zu Mazedonien lange warten, weil die mazedonischen Behörden dem das übliche Maß noch übersteigenden Andrang nicht gewachsen waren.

Diplomatic shuttling between Ankara and Brussels has accelerated greatly as part of joint efforts to secure a solution to the growing refugee crisis amid expectations that an agreement will be finalized at a prospective Turkey-EU summit.
Frans Timmermans, the first vice president of the European Commission, was in Turkey on Nov. 19 to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu as part of a continuation of last week’s intense negotiations over the refugee action plan. The two men and their experts met in Istanbul late on Nov. 19 in an unannounced meeting.

Si fa sempre più difficile la situazione per migliaia di migranti bloccati alle frontiere lungo la rotta balcanica, a causa delle restrizioni imposte negli ultimi due giorni da Macedonia, Serbia, Croazia e Slovenia, denuncia l’ong Oxfam chiedendo la riapertura, il prima possibile, dei confini a tutte le persone in arrivo dalla Grecia per evitare un peggioramento della situazione umanitaria.

Afghans make up more than 20 percent of the migrants and asylum seekers that are arriving on Greek islands. More precisely, according to data from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), of the 562,355 migrants who arrived in Greece between January and late October, about 120,000 came from Afghanistan.
European Union regulations say that – barring a few exceptions – Afghans are not entitled to protection and as a result they are not included in the bloc’s recently launched relocation program.
As an entry point to the EU, Greece is expected to repatriate many of these people in the coming months. Alexis Tsipras, the country’s prime minister, has repeatedly asked Brussels that Afghans be given protection, which is so far limited to people coming from Syria, Iraq and Eritrea.

Einige Balkanländer lassen seit kurzem angebliche „Wirtschaftsmigranten“ nicht mehr einreisen. Im DW-Interview erklärt Melita Sunjic vom UNHCR in Belgrad, warum dies eine gravierende Wende in der Flüchtlingspolitik ist.
DW: Frau Sunjic, erläutern Sie uns doch bitte zunächst die Situation. Welche Länder lassen wen einreisen und wen weisen sie ab?
Melita Sunjic: Vier Länder haben praktisch gleichzeitig dasselbe Regime eingeführt, nämlich Mazedonien, Serbien, Kroatien und Slowenien. Und das Regime lautet: Es werden nur Menschen durchgelassen, die mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit aufgrund ihrer Herkunft Flüchtlinge sind, also Syrer, Iraker und Afghanen. Alle anderen werden nicht mehr durchgelassen.
Mit welcher Begründung?
Die Begründung ist eine politische. Begonnen hat Slowenien, das gesagt hat, es werde nur noch diese drei Nationalitäten durchlassen und alle anderen nicht mehr. Und dann ist ein Dominoeffekt eingetreten, weil kein anderes Land entlang der Strecke diese Leute bei sich haben will.

Process encourages ethnic groups to lie about their backgrounds as Syrian families are fast-tracked on Lesbos
The EU’s refugee registration system on the Greek islands has created a three-tier structure that favours certain nationalities over others, encourages some ethnic groups to lie about their backgrounds to secure preferential treatment, and has led to a situation Human Rights Watch calls absolute chaos.
The dynamic will increase fears over the security threat posed by the hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving in Europe amid a backlash against refugees after the Paris attacks. The passport of a Syrian refugee who passed through Greece was found on or near the body of a dead suicide bomber.

Preparations for a trilateral meeting between Greece, Germany and Turkey to discuss how to handle the refugee crisis appear to be under way.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu revealed earlier this week, when Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras visited Ankara, that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had suggested such a meeting take place. This was confirmed on Friday by officials in Berlin.

A Turkish admiral has shown footage of a migrant boat being sunk on the Aegean Sea by a Greek Coast Guard boat to a Greek Coast Guard commander, urging them to refrain from such acts, daily Hürriyet reported on Nov. 19.
