Un gommone carico di migranti si avvicina ad un cargo. Ha un tubolare completamente sgonfio. Il gommone si ribalta, le persone annaspano nel mare. Non tutti sanno nuotare. I dispersi sono decine. Immagini esclusive di un dramma come tanti nel Mare Mediterraneo, un rischio che migliaia di migranti in fuga da guerra e persecuzione sono costretti a correre per tentare di salvarsi la vita.
In italienischen Regierungskreisen setzt sich die Auffassung durch, dass eine westliche Militärintervention in Libyen derzeit keine Erfolgsmöglichkeit hätte. Stattdessen publizieren die italienischen Tageszeitungen Statements zu dem Vorschlag, die libyschen Häfen militärisch zu blockieren und Spezialkommandos in die Hafenstädte zu schicken. Die Boote, mit denen Flüchtlinge über das Mittelmeer aufbrechen könnten, sollen dabei zerstört werden. Die Forderung, zuerst humanitäre Korridore für die Flüchtinge an der libyschen Küste zu öffnen, bleibt bei den offiziösen Vorschlägen unberücksichtigt.

Summary of the Case: On Friday the 16th of January 2015, in the morning, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by Father Mussie Zerai to a vessel in distress that carried approximately 450 people. Father Zerai forwarded the coordinates and the satellite phone number from the people on board as well as a text message urgently requesting a rescue operation. The first attempt of the shift team to reach the migrants failed and so they quickly turned to the Italian coastguard which stated that they knew about the case but were unwilling to give out further information.

Situation: Vessel in distress in Libyan waters, carrying between 200-300 people
Status of WTM Investigation: Ongoing (latest information received on the 16th of January 2015)
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea, approximately 20 miles off the coast of Libya
Summary of the Case: On Thursday the 15th of January 2015, in the afternoon, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by email to a vessel in distress with approximately 300 people on board. The contact person stated that the passengers were from Somalia, Eritrea and other countries, including 25 children and 60 women. The shift team tried to reach the migrants via the provided Thuraya satellite phone number but was unable to get through. It notified the Italian coastguard and forwarded the Thuraya number. In a phone conversation, the coastguard suggested that they had reached the boat via phone, were able to localise its position and would carry out a rescue operation. However, it was not entirely certain whether they were dealing with the same vessel in distress as the coastguard did not want to provide or verify further information.
Im Rahmen des „Prozesses von Khartoum“ hat die EU wissenschaftliche Institute damit beauftragt, die Abschreckungswirkung des EU-Grenzregimes auf die Motivation von Boat-people vor allem im Mittelmeer zu untersuchen. Erste Studienergebnisse zeigen, dass die „Aspirationen“ auch nicht durch massenhaften Tod an den EU-Grenzen zu brechen sind. Ab Frühjahr 2015 – mit der Besserung des Wetters im zentralen Mittelmeer und der dann steigenden Zahl von Boat-people – ergebe sich daher für die EU ein Dilemma, das nicht mehr mit den hergebrachten Mitteln gelöst werden könne.

Italienische Tageszeitungen kolportieren angebliche Geheimdienstinformationen, dass ISIS in Libyen im Fall eines italienischen Kriegseinsatzes 500.000 Boat-people losschicken würde.
Telefonate intercettate dai servizi segreti e ritenute credibili parlano di un piano per una strage nel Mediterraneo. Mezzo milione di persone pronte a partire, mandando nel panico l’opinione pubblica e influenzando le scelte del governo.
Colpire l’opinione pubblica dei Paesi europei. E farlo con una lunga scia di morte nel tratto di mare che separa l’Italia dal Nord Africa.
Sarebbe questa una delle strategie che il sedicente Stato islamico intende mettere in atto, realizzando una carneficina di migranti.

ROME: Italy would weigh participating in any military intervention to keep forces from the Islamic State group from advancing in Libya should diplomatic efforts fail, Italian officials said Monday.
Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti has said Rome could contribute 5,000 troops to lead such a military mission. But Pinotti and Premier Matteo Renzi on Monday sought to dispel the notion Italy already decided on military operations if launched under the auspices of the United Nations. Renzi told the private TG5 TV news „the proposal is to wait, so the U.N. Security Council can work with a bit more conviction on Libya“ diplomatically.

The drowning of more than 300 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea this week could have been prevented with better EU lifesaving provisions, experts say. The UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, says more migrants are dying because search and rescue efforts have been reduced.
Italy’s major patrol and rescue operation ended last year. A smaller scale EU operation, Triton, took over.
The UNHCR says about 3,500 migrants died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe in 2014.
