„Out of Syria, Into a European Maze
As war rages on, more refugees are risking a journey to what they hope will be prosperous new lives. A boat packed with Syrian refugees fleeing the war bobbed in the sea about 50 miles off the southeastern coast of Sicily.

November 29, 2013 SYRACUSE, Sicily — Fifty miles off the southeastern coast of Sicily, the refugee boat first appeared as a gray spot on the horizon, rising up or dipping away with the churn of the Mediterranean. Then, as an Italian Coast Guard rescue ship drew closer, the small boat came fully into view, as did the dim figure of a man, standing on the bow, waving a white blanket.Adrift at sea, the boat heaved with about 150 Syrians fleeing war. Mothers in head scarves clutched infants. A child wore a SpongeBob life jacket. Smugglers had left them alone with a satellite phone and an emergency number in Italy: Save us, they pleaded to the Italians before the phone went dead. We are lost.Capt. Roberto Mangione shouted for everyone to stay calm as he positioned his Coast Guard ship alongside the listing trawler. The Syrians, pale and beleaguered, started clapping. They had been at sea for six days, drinking fetid water, enduring a terrifying storm. One man combed his hair, as if preparing to greet his new life. In Eritrea bleiben heisst bei lebendigem Leibe sterben
Eritrea ist eines der repressivsten Länder der Welt. Viele der vor Lampedusa ertrunkenen Flüchtlinge stammten von dort. Zwei Eritreer, denen die Flucht nach Europa gelang, erzählen von ihrer Odyssee.

Nennen wir ihn Jonas. Das ist nicht sein richtiger Name, aber er möchte seine Liebsten in Eritrea nicht in Gefahr bringen. Jonas packt den Geldbeutel aus mit den Bildern von Freunden und Familie. Aufgenommen in einem Fotostudio, vor einer Tapete mit Sonnenuntergang. Auf einer Foto sind fünf coole Teenager zu sehen. Er zeigt auf einen lachenden Freund. Der war auf dem Boot, das am 3. Oktober 369 Passagiere vor der Küste Lampedusas in den Tod riss. Sie sind zusammen in Äthiopien im Flüchtlingslager Mai Ayni gewesen. Seit einem Monat lebt der 16-jährige Eritreer im Jugendheim in der Nähe von Frankfurt am Main, nach drei Jahren Flucht. Mit 13 hat er realisiert, dass er keine Zukunft mehr hat, und flieht. Lässt seine Eltern und Geschwister zurück. Nachts bringt ihn ein Auto an die eritreisch-äthiopische Grenze, den Rest geht er mit einem Schulfreund zu Fuss. Er hat jemanden dafür bezahlt. Er wird noch oft zahlen. In äthiopischen Birr, sudanesischen Pfund, libyschen Dinar und Dollars. Den Anfangsbuchstaben des Namens seiner Mutter hat er auf seinen Arm tätowiert. Er vermisst sie. Aber er will nicht auf unbestimmte Zeit zum Militärdienst. Manche sind ihr Leben lang in den Baracken, andere bereits mit ihren Vätern in der zweiten Generation. […]

Die Grenzschutzagentur Frontex soll Flüchtlingsschiffen früher zu Hilfe kommen. Wie dringend das erforderlich ist, belegt das Protokoll eines Untergangs.
BRÜSSEL taz | In dieser Woche hat das Europäische Parlament über die Neuregelung der Seeaußengrenzen beraten. Dabei geht es unter anderem um die Frage, ob Einheiten der Grenzschutzagentur Frontex verbindlich verpflichtet werden sollen, in Seenot Geratenen Hilfe zu leisten.
Grundsätzlich müssen zwar alle Schiffsführer und staatlichen Stellen in Europa Nothilfe leisten. Umstritten ist aber die Frage des Zeitpunkts. Die Kommission und Teile des Parlaments wollen eine verbindliche Verpflichtung für Frontex, nicht erst bei akuter Seenot eingreifen zu müssen.

Lampedusa, Comitato 3 ottobre: Risposte per i familiari vittime
Oggi ad Agrigento incidente probatorio dei superstiti naufragio
Palermo, 29 nov. Nel giorno in cui al tribunale di Agrigento si svolge l’incidente probatorio dei nove superstiti al naufragio del 3 ottobre scorso davanti a Lampedusa che hanno riconosciuto e indicato lo scafista agli inquirenti, il Comitato 3 Ottobre torna a chiedere un incontro urgente al Dipartimento delle Libertà Civili e Immigrazione per sollecitare una risposta adeguata da parte dello Stato italiano ai familiari delle vittime del naufragio davanti a Lampedusa in merito alle procedure di riconoscimento attraverso l’esame del DNA, così come è stato loro promesso. „A due mesi dalla tragedia – si legge in una nota del Comitato – quei morti sono ancora senza nome, sepolti come numeri anonimi che non consentono ai parenti di avere un corpo da piangere e un luogo dove portare un fiore. Nonostante le ripetute promesse seguite alla tragedia, le procedure per il riconoscimento dei corpi non sono mai state avviate. Ancora oggi nella questura di Agrigento continuano ad arrivare da tutta Europa i congiunti dei dispersi in cerca di certezze, ma tornano indietro senza risposta. Ove necessario – conclude la nota -, i parenti delle vittime si dichiarano anche disponibili a sostenere i costi dei test del DNA purché siano messi in condizione di sapere con certezza dove sono sepolti i loro cari. Il Comitato 3 Ottobre sostiene e rilancia tale richiesta che considera alla base del principio universale di accoglienza“.
