Muscat to meet Merkel in Berlin today

The Libyan crisis, irregular immigration and Greece will be on the agenda of talks between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on today.

Dr Muscat is in Berlin for a one-day visit, accompanied by Foreign Minister George Vella and Labour MP Silvio Schembri.

Bilateral relations between the EU’s smallest and largest countries will also be on the agenda as will the Ukrainian crisis.

New UNHCR report warns against returning asylum-seekers to Greece

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at the press briefing, on 30 January 2015, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

UNHCR is today releasing a report on the current situation of asylum in Greece. The report commends Greece for reforms it has undertaken during a period of economic difficulties and limited resources. But it also points to multiple gaps and concerns and carries a recommendation that asylum-seekers should still not be returned there.

Decenas de inmigrantes resistieron durante hora y medio en lo alto del alambrado antes de ser devueltos a Marruecos

La aduana internacional de Beni Enzar, el principal paso fronterizo entre Melilla y la provincia marroquí de Nador, ha permanecido cerrada durante más de dos horas a causa de un nuevo intento de entrada a la ciudad autónoma, en este caso el de un grupo formado por cerca de 400 inmigrantes de origen subsahariano.

La acción se inició en torno a las 5.30 horas a escasos metros de Beni Enzar, ubicado al sur de la ciudad autónoma. Varios centenares de jóvenes subsaharianos, en su mayoría cameruneses, intentaron entrar a Melilla a través las cuatro vallas metálicas de más de seis metros de altura que separan ambos países. En su intento por llegar al vallado los inmigrantes protagonizaron ya un primer enfrentamiento a pedradas con las fuerzas auxiliares marroquíes que, en un determinado momento y al verse desbordadas, tuvieron que ser auxiliadas por la Guardia Civil.
