Hoy en el año 2014 el mar Mediterráneo se ha convertido en una fosa común para los refugiados y los migrantes. En los primeros nueve meses del año se han registrado más de 3.000 muertes en el mar. En los últimos años, ninguna otra parte del mundo ha registrado más muertes de personas desplazadas. A pesar de ello el 27 de agosto de 2014, la UE y sus responsables decidieron desmontar el operativo de rescate marítimo italiano ‘Mare Nostrum’ para sustituirlo gradualmente por un operativo de carácter “disuasorio” a cargo de la agencia FRONTEX, en las aguas costeras de la UE. Esto provocará un aumento de las muertes en el Mediterráneo, desembocando así en una catástrofe humanitaria de grandes proporciones.

In Seenot geratene Migranten sollen damit die Initiative „Watch the Med“ alarmieren können, damit die zuständigen Behörden unter Druck gesetzt und Rettungsaktionen überprüft werden könnten
Die Nummer der Hotline, die in Nordafrika und der Türkei an potenzielle Flüchtlinge verteilt werden soll, ist vom kommenden Wochenende an rund um die Uhr erreichbar, heißt es in dem am Mittwoch veröffentlichten Aufruf.

Transnationales Netzwerk alarmiert ab 10.10.2014 bei Seenot und Rückschiebungen
Das Mittelmeer bleibt auch 2014 ein Massengrab für Flüchtlinge und MigrantInnen. In den ersten neun Monaten des Jahres hat es mehr als 3.000 registrierte Tote gegeben, nirgendwo sonst auf der Welt sind in den letzten Jahren so viele Menschen auf der Flucht ums Leben gekommen. Dennoch entschieden die verantwortlichen EU-Gremien am 27. August 2014, die italienische Seenotrettung Mare Nostrum zurückzufahren und schrittweise durch eine Frontex-Abschottungsmission in EU-Küstengewässern zu ersetzen. Damit ist vorgezeichnet, dass das Massensterben im Mittelmeer noch größere Dimensionen annehmen wird.

The Watch The Med Alarm Phone is a ‘hotline’ for people in distress at sea. Our hotline will run 24/7 and will immediately raise alarm when refugees and migrants get into situations of distress at sea and are not promptly rescued. It will be managed by human rights activists from both sides of the Mediterranean and offer a multilingual team that will first advise all persons in distress to alert the officially responsible rescue teams. The Watch The Med Alarm Phone does not possess rescue-teams and we cannot offer direct protection. When a distress call is received, we will call the coast guards ourselves, and follow up on their response, making known to them that we are informed and ‘watching’ them. If they fail to respond, we will gather all imaginable political and public pressure to force them to do so.

The first the crew of the Antarctica knew of the disaster was a radio request to help a search and rescue operation. There were bodies in the water 200 miles off the coast of Malta. Two other ships – the Verdi and the Japan – were already at the scene, picking people out of the sea. The Antarctica was swiftly diverted and took command until the arrival of coastguard and naval ships.
