The Italian minister of Interior says there is one dead person onboard one of the boats.

„[…] Non a caso si ricorda che nel 2011, in occasione della ‚primavera‘ araba e la crisi libica, quando il flusso dei migranti era andato molto oltre il livello di guardia, il budget di Frontex era stato fatto lievitare da 86,4 milioni di euro a circa 118. Un’iniezione finanziaria aggiuntiva finalizzata ad un maggiore dispiegamento di uomini e mezzi nell’area del Mediterraneo centrale, per cercare di governare la situazione. D’altra parte, il portavoce del commissario Ue agli Affari interni fa notare come „non si deve creare l’aspettativa che la Commissione o l’Unione possano prendere la situazione in mano“.

Nel corso del pomeriggio di ieri e durante la notte, le navi della Marina Militare hanno soccorso tre natanti in difficoltà provenienti dalle coste del Nord Africa, avvistati dall’elicottero della fregata Maestrale e da un drone (UAV) dell’Aeronautica militare. Tra i 1.049 migranti portati in salvo ci – informa una nota della Marina – sono 151 donne e 91 minori, compresi 3 neonati. Al salvataggio hanno partecipato le fregate Maestrale ed Euro e i pattugliatori Foscari e Sirio che arriveranno nei porti di Augusta e Pozzallo nel pomeriggio di oggi.

The number of people rescued at sea by Italy in 2014 is high but not unexpected.
In light of the situation at Europe’s doorstep, the Syrian crisis and the instability of many countries in North Africa, it would have been far from impossible to foresee an increase of migrants‘ and asylum seekers‘ arrivals. This is confirmed by Frontex risk analysis on the third trimester, i.e. summer 2013, according to which the number of arrivals by sea was increasing.

La mayoría de los subsaharianos son varones mayores de edad, aunque en la embarcación más numerosa, la que ha llegado a la isla de Alborán, había tres mujeres embarazadas y cinco menores.

Porto Empedocle – La nave anfibia San Giorgio ed il pattugliatore Vega sono stati impegnati ieri pomeriggio e durante la notte nel soccorso a due natanti in arrivo dalle coste nord-africane con a bordo complessivamente 730 migranti; tra di loro 124 donne e 29 minori.

„Frontex, l’agence européenne pour la gestion de la coopération opérationnelle aux frontières extérieures des Etats membres de l’Union européenne, ne collecte de son côté de statistiques que sur les seuls réfugiés interceptés et reconduits à la frontière, jamais sur ceux qui ont perdu la vie. Interrogé sur cette myopie, un des membres de l’agence a reconnu, sous couvert d’anonymat, que « le travail de Frontex, c’est la lutte contre l’immigration illégale, pas le sauvetage en mer, et ces gens-là sont morts, ce ne sont plus des migrants », avant de reconnaître que ses collègues et lui ne voient pas bien, en l’état, comment Eurosur, tel qu’il a été développé depuis, pourrait sauver des vies.“

„This morning, Greek Coast Guard authorities mounted a rescue operation after receiving an SOS signal on Sunday, sent by a boat carrying illegal immigrants. The rescue mission successfully came to an end on Monday afternoon, with the Coast Guard rescuing 408 illegal immigrants, including 100 women and children, who were on board an old 32-meter boat, which was located 65 nautical miles northwest of Crete.
