Libyen bleibt ein Land im Kriegszustand – die Nachrichten sind bestimmt von Flüchtenden als Opfer von Gewalt und Ausbeutung und gewalttätigen Interessenkonflikten lokaler Machthaber. Bislang ist es der Europäischen Union (EU) nicht gelungen, mit Libyen Vereinbarungen zur Begrenzung der Migration nach Europa zu schließen. Zeitgleich wird in den Gewässern des zentralen Mittelmeers ein vehementer Kampf um Migrationskontrolle geführt – vor der libyschen Küste und auf der Fluchtroute nach Italien. Die libysche Küstenwache hat dabei schon mehrfach Flüchtlingsschiffe und auch Boote privater Rettungsinitiativen in große Gefahr gebracht – und wird weiterhin von der EU durch deren »Grenzschutzagentur« Frontex im Aufbau unterstützt. Aktuell fordert Libyen von der EU unter anderem 130 bewaffnete Boote, um ihren eigenen Kampf gegen Flüchtende zu führen. Mitte April spitzte sich die Situation zu, als vor allem dank privater Rettungsschiffe 8.300 Menschen aus Seenot gerettet wurden. Helrich, Judith, Conni, Hagen, Maurice und Daniel sind Aktivist_innen des transnationalen Netzwerks Watch The Med Alarm Phone. Ende April gaben sie eine Einschätzung zur aktuellen Situation im Mittelmeer.

Die spanische Küstenwache hat mehr als 170 Menschen in Booten im Mittelmeer aufgegriffen.

Wie die Behörden mitteilten, hatte Marokko die Küstenwache über ein Flüchtlingsboot alarmiert, das zur Straße von Gibraltar unterwegs war. Insgesamt wurden in dem Gebiet vier Boote mit Flüchtlingen aus dem südlichen Afrika entdeckt. Nach Angaben der Internationalen Organisation für Migration kamen in den ersten vier Monaten dieses Jahres fast 2.500 Flüchtlinge über das Mittelmeer nach Spanien. Insgesamt wurden im gleichen Zeitraum an Europas Küsten mehr als 45.000 über das Mittelmeer eintreffende Flüchtlinge gezählt.

AFP 27 May 2017 09:50 CEST+02:00: More than 1,400 migrants seeking to get to Italy were rescued off the coast of Libya on Friday, but other vessels were in distress, according to accounts by Libyan and Italian officials. „Large rescue and interception operations are under way,“ navy spokesman General Ayoub Qassem said. „Today is the day of a massive exodus of illegal migrants toward Europe.“ The Libyan coastguard, fishing and commercial boats were working in coordination with the Italian authorities, he said. A Libyan oil tanker picked up 562 migrants, including dozens of women and children, and took them to Tripoli, a Libyan coastguard official said. Another group of migrants, whose size was not given, were taken to Zawiya, 50 kilometres (30 miles) to the west, this source said. In Rome, the Italian coastguard said it had sent several vessels and rerouted commercial ships to pick up 850 migrants. However, three other boats laden with migrants were in distress.

Yesterday, Tuesday 23 May, new levels of disorder were reached in the daily tragedy unfolding in Mediterranean. In just one day, the teams aboard the Aquarius, operated jointly by SOS MEDITERRANEE and Doctors Without Borders, rescued a record 1004 people from 11 boats – 9 rubber boats and two wooden boats.

“This was one of the most complex and tricky rescue operations we have had since the beginning of our mission at sea – an absolute emergency,” said Mathias Menge, Search and Rescue coordinator aboard the Aquarius.

A new level of disorder was also reached, due to the fact that guns were fired by the Libyan coast guard. This unfolded during the rescue operations conducted by SOS MEDITERRANEE and MSF, in cooperation with NGO Save The Children and Jugend Rettet and under the coordination of the MRCC. La ONG guipuzcoana Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario, que desde 2015 trata de “salvaguardar” la vida de las personas que huyen de persecuciones por el Mar Egeo, se ha unido a los bomberos sevillanos de Proem-Aid para lanzar la campaña #MaydayTerráneo. Ambas organizaciones realizaron ayer un llamamiento a la colaboración ciudadana para financiar el Proyecto AitaMari que pretende reforzar el dispositivo de rescate independiente del Mediterráneo Central con una embarcación. Para ello, necesitan una financiación de 250.000 euros, de los cuales estas organizaciones ya han puesto 50.000 como “primera piedra”.

About 5,000 refugees bound for Italy were rescued in waters off the coast of Libya between Thursday and Saturday morning by Italian and Libyan coastguards, according to statements from both countries.

About 2,900 people were rescued on Thursday, 2,300 of whom were found in international waters and taken to Italy, while 580 picked up in Libyan waters were returned to the north African country.

Through Friday until Saturday morning, coastguards rescued another 2,100 refugees packed in 17 vessels, but found the body of one man who drowned, the Italian coastguard said.

The surviving refugees told the Reuters news agency of arbitrary detention, slavery and beatings in Libya.

Innerhalb eines Tages sind rund 2.300 Flüchtlinge auf der zentralen Mittelmeerroute zwischen Afrika und Europa aus Seenot gerettet worden.

Die Menschen seien unter anderem in Schlauchbooten unterwegs gewesen, teilten die italienischen Behörden mit. An der Rettung hätten sich Schiffe der Küstenwache, des EU-Marineeinsatzes „Eunavfor“ und von Nichtregierungsorganisationen beteiligt.

Geschäftsführer verteidigt die Arbeit der Seenotrettung vor dem italienischen Parlament

Axel Grafmanns: Ich bin in der ehemaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik aufgewachsen, darum weiß ich genau, was es heißt, an einer tödlichen Grenze zu leben. Das ist einer der Gründe die dazu führen, mich für die humanitäre Mission von Sea-Watch zu engagieren. Papst Franziskus, der hier in Rom im Vatikan seinen Sitz hat, sagte am 27. November des Jahres 2014: „Wir dürfen nicht hinnehmen, dass das Mittelmeer zu einem riesigen Friedhof wird.“ Zu diesem Zeitpunkt lief die Operation „Mare Nostrum“ aus und in diesem Zeitraum wurde Sea-Watch gegründet.

Unser Verein wurde also von drei Familien gegründet, die dem Sterben im Mittelmeer nicht länger tatenlos zusehen wollten. Also entschlossen sie sich, etwas zu unternehmen. Viele haben uns anfangs ausgelacht. Es klang verrückt, mit einem alten Krabbenkutter in das Mittelmeer zu fahren und Search and Rescue zu betreiben. Wir hatten von Anfang auch die Idee des „Watch“ – die Bilder des Elends nach Europa und Deutschland zu bringen. Mittlerweile rettet Sea-Watch e.V. viele Menschenleben.
