These protests are at the heart of Hailemariam Desalegn’s decision to step down, according to several experts, who say the country is now at a critical juncture in its political history.

The recent protests show that Tunisia is still a cauldron of popular resistance against neoliberal and neo-colonial attacks on the country’s sovereignty.

Around 800 people were arrested, dozens were injured and at least one person was killed in a violent police crackdown on the protests that rocked Tunisia for over two weeks in January. The protesters, who stemmed from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds, took to the streets in response to the government’s announcement of its 2018 budget. A new round of harsh austerity measures are predicted to inflate prices of basic foods, fuel and energy and to further undermine crucial public services such as health care and education.

Angry at the decision to increase food prices last month, restive Jordanians are demanding the government’s resignation and the dissolution of parliament.

Last month, the government implemented a tax rise of between 50-100 percent on key food staples such as bread, in order to decrease its $700m budget deficit.

Jordan’s debt has now reached $40bn and its debt-to-gross-domestic-product ratio has reached a record 95 percent, up from 71 percent in 2011.

The economic crunch that squeezes the country will be particularly acute this year, after Jordan’s Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) allies – Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait – did not renew a five-year financial assistance programme with Amman worth $3.6bn that ended in 2017.

Rivolta per la libertà nell’hotspot di Milo, a Trapani. Sessanta tunisini hanno atteso l’ora di cena, sabato sera, per tentare la fuga dal centro di accoglienza. La ditta che fornisce i pasti, infatti, arriva alle 19 e i cancelli, sotto la vigilanza della polizia, vengono spalancati. I maghrebini stavolta non si sono messi in fila per ricevere il pasto ma si sono disposti in blocco e si sono scagliati contro dieci poliziotti. I tunisini, in attesa di rimpatrio, hanno tentato di fuggire. I poliziotti sono riusciti a contenere la rivolta ma poco dopo all’interno dell’hotspot è scoppiato un incendio. Gli ospiti hanno dato fuoco ai materassi e agli abiti, hanno spaccato le vetrate e divelto gli infissi. Diversdi i lanci di vetri e infissi spaccati all’indirizzo della polizia. Tre gli agenti che hanno riportato lievi ferite al viso e alle mani e sono stati medicati: otto i giorni di prognosi. Uno dei tunisini ha chiesto di essere accompagnato in ospedale per un malore ma poco dopo è fuggito via.

“Black lives matter”, le vite dei neri valgono. La vita di Jennifer, quella di Wilson, quella di Gideon e quella di tutti gli altri. A Macerata una ragazza nera, che se ne sta in disparte dietro allo striscione dei metalmeccanici, ha scritto su un cartoncino bianco questa frase in inglese. Ricalca lo slogan del movimento antirazzista statunitense, nato nel 2013 per denunciare le violenze sistematiche della polizia contro i neri. Come tanti, è venuta a ribadire un principio fondamentale: lo stato moderno nasce dal ripudio della violenza arbitraria di un essere umano su un essere umano. Vale anche per la repubblica italiana.

A Macerata il 10 febbraio qualcuno è venuto semplicemente a dare “un abbraccio collettivo a Wilson Kofi, Omar Fadera, Jennifer Odion, Gideon Azeke, Mahamadou Toure, Festus Omagbon” (come è scritto su uno striscione), cioè a dimostrare solidarietà ai feriti della sparatoria avvenuta il 3 febbraio nella cittadina marchigiana, quando Luca Traini, un estremista di destra di 28 anni, ha impugnato una pistola e si è messo a girare per la città in auto, sparando a caso contro i neri che ha incontrato per strada.

Vor einer Woche beschoss ein Neonazi in Macerata sechs Schwarze. Nun demonstrierten bis zu 30.000 Menschen in der italienischen Stadt gegen Rassismus.

MACERATA afp | Eine Woche nach den Schüssen auf afrikanische Migranten in der italienischen Stadt Macerata haben dort zehntausende Menschen gegen Rassismus demonstriert. Die Demonstranten folgten am Samstag dem Aufruf von Nichtregierungsorganisationen, Antifa-Gruppen, Gewerkschaften und linken Parteien. Auch in anderen Städten des Landes wie Mailand fanden Protestkundgebungen statt, in Piacenza kam es dabei zu Ausschreitungen.

Zwischen 10.000 und 30.000 Menschen hätten an der Demonstration in Macerata im Zentrum Italiens teilgenommen, teilten die Organisatoren mit. „Wenn es Arbeitslosigkeit gibt, werft es der Regierung vor, nicht den Migranten“, riefen die Demonstranten. Viele sangen das bekannte Partisanenlied „Bella Ciao“ oder andere antifaschistische Lieder. Zu den Teilnehmern zählten auch viele afrikanische Migranten.

Adrar: Les chômeurs bloquent le complexe gazier de Reggane

Plus de 300 jeunes chômeurs de la commune de Sali, dans la daïra de Reggane, wilaya d’Adrar, observent un sit-in de protestation près de ksar Bahoupour pour dénoncer leur exclusion de recrutement au complexe gazier qui se trouve à quelques kilomètres. L’entrée au nouveau complexe gazier de Reggane Nord inauguré récemment par le chef de gouvernement Ahmed Ouyahia était toujours fermée. La région d’Adrar est confrontée au problème de l’emploi. Le chômage touche tout le monde, indique le représentant des protestataires. Le complexe gazier a été réalisé par un investissement de 1,5 milliard de dollars, mais aucun impact économique n’a été ressenti par la population, «sauf la pollution et le bruit des engins», indiquent les jeunes en colère. Les jeunes protestataires bloquaient hier l’accès principal qui mène au complexe, paralysant toutes son activité.

Nachdem es in den eigentlich geschlossenen Kohlebergwerken von Jerada erneut zu einem Unfall mit Todesfolge gekommen ist, werden die lokalen Proteste stärker. Ein Generalstreik ist aufgerufen. In der Stadt mit ehemals über 60.000 EinwohnerInnen gibt es fast keine Beschäftigung mehr. Aus der Kohleförderung ist eine selbstorganisierte Armutsökonomie geworden. Seit Monaten befindet sich die Region immer wieder in Aufruhr.

Sur fond de grève générale et d’une présence policière sans précédent sur les lieux, la population de Jerada observe ce vendredi un sit-in devant la morgue, où se trouve la dépouille d’(A.Z), dernière victime des puits à charbon.

L’ouvrier (A.Z.) est décédé hier après l’effondrement d’un puit de charbon à Hassi Belal (province de Jerada). La nouvelle a provoqué une vague de colère, poussant la population à porter le corps du défunt lors d’une manifestation qui s’est dirigée vers le siège de la Commune de Jerada.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A government plan to deport tens of thousands of African migrants has sparked an unexpected backlash from liberal Israelis and their American Jewish allies who say Israel — established in the wake of the Holocaust — should never be turning away those in need.

The showdown could come to a head on April 1, when the state plans to start expelling Africans, some of whom have been in Israel for years and have children who know no other home, to an uncertain fate.

Schon seit ein paar Tagen protestieren 42 tunesische Migranten auf Lampedusa. Sie fordern, dass sie verlegt und nicht repatriiert werden. Viele haben seit drei Tagen nichts mehr gegessen, einige haben sich den Mund zugenäht.

Sono 42 i migranti che stanno continuando la protesta che va avanti da diversi giorni davanti alla chiesa madre di Lampedusa. Molti di loro non mangiano da tre giorni e in diversi, si sono cuciti la bocca con ago e filo di cotone bianco. Chiedono di potere essere trasferiti dalla più grande isola delle Pelagie e di non essere rimpatriati. Le forze dell’ordine seguono i migranti senza intervenire rimanendo nelle vicinanze, in assetto antisommossa.
