US positions forces in Sicily over Libya security fears

The Pentagon said on Wednesday it has temporarily moved nearly 200 Marines to Sicily from their base in Spain as a precaution due to concerns about unrest in North Africa, bolstering the US ability to respond to any crisis.

The Pentagon declined to single out any countries but two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said American concerns were centered squarely on Libya, where armed groups and Islamists refused to disarm after the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.

„[…] Mit der Horizont-Erweiterung deutscher Außenpolitik auf Afrika – nicht zuletzt ­wegen des permanenten Flüchtlingsdramas im Mittelmeer – rückt auch das Stuttgarter ­Afrika-Kommando der US-Streitkräfte (Africom) stärker in den deutschen Fokus. Daher finden an diesem Dienstag im Africom-Hauptquartier in den Stuttgarter ­Kelley Barracks die ersten formellen Stabsgespräche zwischen hochrangigen Vertretern des Verteidigungsministeriums und von Africom statt.
Die US-Delegation wird vom stellvertretenden Africom-Kommandeur, Generalleutnant Steven Hummer, angeführt. Die deutsche Seite wird in Stuttgart nach Informationen unserer Zeitung von Konteradmiral Thomas Jugel, Stellvertreter des Abteilungsleiters Strategie und Einsatz im Verteidigungsministerium, angeführt. Ziele des Treffens sind nach Angaben eines Sprechers des ­Verteidigungsministeriums „das Ausloten möglicher Kooperationsfelder“ sowie eine Zusammenarbeit bei „Maßnahmen zur regionalen Stabilisierung durch Ertüchtigung afrikanischer Streitkräfte“. Auch Africom zeigt sich interessiert: „Wir werden nach Wegen suchen, wo wir kooperieren und uns gegenseitig unterstützen können“, sagte ein US-Militärsprecher im Vorfeld des Treffens. […]“

At least 800,000 migrants are about to depart the North African coast for Europe, while the reception system in Italy – the first landing point for the vast majority of these – is already on the brink of collapse from tens of thousands of earlier arrivals, official said Tuesday. „We no longer have a place to take them, and locals are overwhelmed by the constant arrival of foreigners,“ Giovanni Pinto, head of the Immigration and Border Police agency, told a joint meeting of the foreign and defence committees in the Italian Senate. I salvataggi dei migranti nel Canale di Sicilia potrebbero essere interrotti. Per il proseguimento dell’operazione Mare Nostrum l’Italia chiede aiuto all’Europa che, però, fa orecchie da mercante. «Penso che l’operazione debba diventare europea ma temo che non accadrà. Sono abbastanza pessimista: non riusciremo ad avere la partecipazione degli altri Stati membri», dice a left il sottosegretario con delega alle Politiche europee Sandro Gozi.

[…] Italiens Marine hat im Mittelmeer fast 2000 Flüchtlinge aufgegriffen.

[…] Das erste Patrouillenschiff brachte 395 Menschen in Sizilien an Land, mit zwei weiteren Schiffen sind mehr als 1500 Flüchtlinge zu den Häfen Augusta und Porto Empedocle unterwegs. Damit hat die italienische Marine nach eigenen Angaben in nur wenigen Stunden fast 2000 Menschen im Mittelmeer aufgegriffen, von sieben überfüllten und schlecht ausgerüsteten Booten.
