Lampedusa tragedy – a case of political bravado gone wrong?

Documents, maps and eye-witness accounts seem to indicate that the Maltese government took what was the riskiest and least logical of the six choices it had available on 11 October, when the country was charged with coordinating the rescue of hundreds of Syrian migrants off Lampedusa.

Any of the other five choices could have prevented the migrant tragedy, but all the available evidence leads to the conclusion that Malta had tried to rescue the migrants on its own, instead of asking for the assistance that was available.

Migration: Malta loses European Court appeals on shorter detention periods

Malta has lost a final appeal against two European Court of Human Rights judgments demanding that migrants are kept in detention for shorter periods and that conditions at closed centres be improved.

The original judgments – in which Malta was also fined €60,000 – were handed down by the ECHR in July but they were not final as either party had three months to request that the case be referred to the Grand Chamber of the Court.

The government challenged the decisions, requesting a referral to the Grand Chamber in October but the request was rejected last week, meaning the judgments are now final and legally bind the government to pay the penalties and move to implement the ECHR’s recommendations.

L’invitation des journalistes algériens et mauritaniens en même temps est expliquée au sein des casernes « Kelley » à Stuttgart par «l’importante relation de partenariat que nous entretenons avec vos deux pays ainsi que les rencontres au plus haut niveau que nous avons eues ». L’essentiel est que «nous avons des intérêts communs de stabilité, de sécurité et de développement », dit un responsable américain de l’USAFRICOM. Au niveau de ce commandement, il est souvent avancé que «l’Algérie et la Mauritanie sont deux pays partenaires leaders ». Cette « sentence » est inspirée, selon ses auteurs, par «le poids géostratégique des deux pays et leur expérience en matière de lutte contre le terrorisme ; il est donc impératif de continuer et de renforcer ce partenariat ».

Les Etats-Unis vont fournir à l’Algérie des équipements pour désamorcer les engins explosifs improvisés (EEI) ainsi que des MRAP, véhicules blindés conçus pour résister aux explosifs en question.

Ce sont les deux plus importants responsables de l’USAFRICOM (le Commandement américain pour l’Afrique) qui ont défloré le sujet devant des journalistes algériens et mauritaniens en visite pour une semaine, au siège du commandement à Stuttgart. Il est vrai qu’ils ont été avares d’informations et de déclarations à ce sujet, mais chacun de son côté, a délivré des bribes sur des requêtes algériennes d’achat d’équipements et d’armement, comme pour que chacun complète les déclarations de l’autre.

3 illegal migrants die as boat sinks off İzmir coast

A small boat sank off the İzmir coast on Monday, killing at least three illegal migrants attempting to reach the Greek island of Chios and leaving nine people lost at sea, according to initial reports. İzmir Governor Mustafa Toprak stated that a boat carrying illegal migrants, some of whom are reportedly of Syrian origin, sank off the coast of one of İzmir’s tourist destinations, Çeşme, during an attempt to cross to the Greek island.

Italienische Regierungskreise halten den italienischen Militäreinsatz im Mittelmeer unter dem Namen „Mare Nostrum“ gegen Boat-people nur bis Jahresende für haltbar. Anschliessend sollte die EU in einem EU-gemeinsamen Militäreinsatz Boat-people im Mittelmeer abwehren. Als Vorbild wird „Atalanta“ genannt, der Militäreinsatz gegen Piraten vor dem Horn von Afrika. – Auf der Pressekonferenz in Rom, auf der dieser Plan vorgestellt wurde, war Außenminister Westerwelle zugegen.
