The European Union might have to postpone the launch of a mission tasked with training Libyan coastguard officers as part of an operation to curb refugee trafficking, diplomats say.

A European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Sunday that the commanders of the EU naval mission known as Operation Sophia “are still waiting for the list” of 100 initial candidates for the training program, which was initially planned to commence by the end of September or mid-October.

The African migrant trail via Libya is far more dangerous than the Syrian route via Greece.

Ever since the Syrian refugee crisis hit international headlines the plight of African migrants in Europe has taken a back seat. Media attention has focused on arrivals via the eastern Mediterranean route – from Turkey to Greece – because of the huge number of arrivals, when in reality the central Mediterranean route via Libya to Italy is by far the deadliest into Europe. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) between 1 January to 28 September 3,054 migrants have died taking it.

Le chef de la diplomatie libyenne, Taher Siala, a déclaré jeudi 6 octobre que la Libye était opposée à l’ouverture sur son sol de camps de migrants souhaitant rallier l’Europe. Les dirigeants européens avaient fait de cette proposition un moyen de limiter les arrivées via la Méditerranée.

Côté libyens, la proposition de l’UE a été vite expédiée. Un tel projet signifierait que l’Union européenne « refuse d’assumer ses responsabilités et les fasse peser sur nos épaules », a estimé Taher Siala lors d’une réunion de l’Organisation pour la sécurité et la coopération en Europe (OSCE) à Vienne.

L’idée est en outre « très éloignée des réalités du terrain » alors que la Libye est toujours déchirée par une guerre civile, a ajouté Taher Siala.

More than 10,000 refugees have been rescued off Libya and Italy in series of operations in the past 48 hours. At least 142,000 migrants have reached Italy since the start of the year and about 3,100 have died making the trip. The vast majority come from African countries including Nigeria, Eritrea, Guinea, Gambia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Somalia

Rund tausend Menschen in Holzboot zusammengepfercht

Bei der Überfahrt über das Mittelmeer sind am Dienstag mindestens 28 Flüchtlinge ums Leben gekommen. Mindestens 22 von ihnen starben auf einem völlig überladenen Holzboot vor der libyschen Küste, wie ein Fotograf der Nachrichtenagentur AFP berichtete. In dem Schiff waren demnach rund tausend Menschen zusammengepfercht.

Der AFP-Reporter, der an Bord des Holzbootes gehen konnte, zählte dort mindestens 22 Tote, allerdings wurden noch weitere Todesopfer im Laderaum des Schiffes befürchtet. Die meisten von ihnen erstickten in der Enge.

An EU-bound boat carrying two Libyan families has capsized off Sabratha coast killing all on board, local authorities have reported.

Sabratha Coast Guard said several bodies washed ashore on Monday while search for others are still ongoing.

„The total number of bodies is still unclear because the search is still continuing,“ Basem Gharabli, Chief of Sabratha Coast Guard declared.

Libyan patrols intercepted some 1,425 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe over the past two days, a naval spokesman said on Friday.

Ayoub Qassem said about 1,050 migrants on seven inflatable boats were turned back early on Wednesday. Most were from sub-Saharan African countries and about one third were women and children, he said.

On Thursday two more rubber boats were intercepted with about 300 people on board, as well as three small wooden boats carrying a total of about 75 people.

Sie hatten auf Schlauchbooten und Flößen zusammengepfercht Italien erreichen wollen. Die Küstenwache barg mindestens neun Leichen aus dem Wasser.

An einem einzigen Tag sind vor der libyschen Küste 6055 Flüchtlinge gerettet worden. Wie die italienische Küstenwache am Montag mitteilte, seien die Migranten größtenteils auf Schlauchbooten, aber auch mit zwei Flößen unterwegs gewesen. Außerdem wurden die Leichen von neun Menschen aus dem Wasser geborgen, darunter eine 23-jährige Schwangere.

Nove cadaveri di migranti sono stati recuperati dai soccorritori che oggi hanno tratto in salvo quasi seimila persone nel Canale di Sicilia. Sette vittime erano su uno stesso barcone, una su un’altra imbarcazione, mentre un’altra persona, recuperata in gravi condizioni, è morta mentre veniva trasportata verso la terraferma con una unità navale della Guardia Costiera.
