Almeno 3.419 migranti hanno perso la vita nel Mar Mediterraneo da gennaio. Lo annuncia l’agenzia Onu per i rifugiati UNHCR, sottolineando come questo bilancio record in negativo trasformi questa traversata la „strada più mortale del mondo“. Dall’inizio dell’anno, sono stati oltre 207mila i migranti che hanno tentato di attraversare il Mar Mediterraneo: una cifra quasi tre volte superiore al precedente record del 2011.

The governments of the poor Sahelian states of Niger and Chad are struggling to accommodate a total of 75,000 refugees crossing the Sahara desert from Libya.
According to the latest statistic update from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) offices in Niamey, Niger, some 54,200 persons have fled Libya into this impoverished Sahelian nation only. Niger authorities even put the number at 57,000.
Most of those fleeing Libya, taking great risks crossing the Sahara desert, are Nigerien nationals – mostly migrant workers in Libya. However, almost 4,000 non-Nigeriens – mostly nationals of other African countries – have also reached Niger.
Those arriving Niger’s northern border, in the middle of the Sahara desert, are mostly deprived of all their values and need assistance to reach their final destinations in Niger or beyond.
Niger authorities and the IOM operate several reception centres in northern Niger. Here, the migrants are registered, given necessary aid and helped reaching their original home.
Dimitris Avramopoulos, the commission’s top man on migration and home affairs, told reporters last week following a two-day marathon meeting of EU justice and home affairs meetings in Brussels that “we are confronted with increasing pressures at our external borders and inside the European Union”.
Discussions included the issues surrounding the threat of foreign fighters returning to Europe after fighting for IS, getting the European parliament to sign off controversial data sharing agreements, border surveillance, and migration.

Secondo quanto rivelato da RID, rivista italiana specializzata sulle tematiche della difesa, l’Aeronautica militare si appresta a dispiegare i velivoli senza pilota “Predator” del 32° Stormo di Amendola (Foggia) in un Paese appartenente alla fascia dell’Africa Centrale, per sostenere le operazioni occidentali contro le diverse milizie ribelli islamico radicali. Non è certo ancora dove i droni-spia italiani saranno rischierati, anche se è probabile che si tratti della martoriata Repubblica Centrafricana, dove da quest’estate opera un contingente di 50 uomini dell’8° Reggimento genio guastatori della Brigata paracadutisti “Folgore” di Legnago (Verona). Il personale italiano è integrato nella forza multinazionale dell’Unione Europea (EUFOR RCA) attivata a Bangui a giugno. Secondo quanto dichiarato dal Ministero della difesa, i parà nella RCA hanno il compito di “garantire il supporto della mobilità delle forze europee, la ricognizione e il mantenimento degli assi di comunicazione, la bonifica di residuati bellici e la realizzazione di lavori infrastrutturali in favore della popolazione e del governo locale”. Nei mesi scorsi, i militari hanno contribuito alla “protezione” delle imprese impegnate alla costruzione di un ponte tra due quartieri della capitale, in una delle aree più “sensibili” per la presenza di oltre 20.000 sfollati. Gli italiani partecipano insieme a un contingente delle forze speciali spagnole pure alle attività di vigilanza dello scalo aereo di Bangui. “L’aeroporto è l’unico terminal internazionale in Centrafrica”, spiega il portavoce della Difesa. “I genieri della brigata Folgore hanno migliorato la viabilità, realizzato le aree di controllo degli autoveicoli, controllato oltre 800 mezzi al giorno e rinforzato i checkpoint a protezione dello scalo”.
On December 3, the daily Echourouk el-Youmi reported: „In the following interview with Echoroukonline, Muhammad Bilkhayr, the Libyan minister of labour and rehabilitation and the spokesman of Umar al-Hasi government, spoke about the security situation in the country, stressing that Libya has become a major source of arms for criminal groups. He pointed out that there are foreign forces seeking to strike at Algeria after targeting Libya. He also said that they are waiting for an invitation to attend dialogue sessions that Algeria is preparing for. On the other hand, he accused some Arab countries of making matters worse in Libya by supporting Haftar, whom he called a coupist.

All countries should allow civilians fleeing Libya, including third country nationals who have been living there, access to their territories. Other countries should suspend forcible returns of civilians to any location in Libya until the security and human rights situation has improved sufficiently to allow for a safe and dignified return.

The armed conflicts and lawlessness in Libya are giving rise to indiscriminate violence and widespread human rights abuses. As a result, anyone forcibly returned to any part of Libya would be exposed to a real risk of serious harm, which would constitute what is known as refoulement under international law.
