Ein Hochsicherheitstrakt – so sieht das Flüchtlingslager „Moria“ auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos aus. Drinnen gibt es unbeheizte Zelte und verschmutzte Toiletten. Doch wer hier nicht rein kommt, hat noch nicht einmal das.

Hohe Mauern, tonnenweise schwerer Stacheldraht, ein Wachturm mit viel Polizei und Security – „Moria“ sieht im Oktober 2017 noch genauso aus wie im April 2016, als der Papst es besucht und anschließend mit einem Konzentrationslager verglichen hatte.

Es sind wieder deutlich mehr neue Migranten angekommen: Etwa 5000 Neuankömmlinge registrierte das UNHCR allein im September – im Oktober waren es bisher knapp 4000 neue Flüchtlinge, die mit Booten von der Türkei über die kurze Ägäis-Route kamen. Die meisten davon nach Lesbos.

Today in the afternoon more then 50 people gathered in the harbour of Thermi/Lesvos in commemoration of the dead of the European border regime. Among them were survivors of a shipwreck on 23rdof April of this year in the North of Lesvos as well as people active in rescue. The memorial happens once every year since October 2013 and was initiated by the Welcome to Europe network.

When we started to remember this year, who we have to mourn for, we realized that we are more and more confronted with death even after people have survived the sea. We had to commemorate today also friend who died last winter in the hot-spot of Moria, because they had been left during winter in terrible conditions. We are in close contacts with families that they waited too long to be reunited with their beloved even if they had the right for family reunification and died before. If you really want to mourn the dead of the Sea, you have to respect also the survivors. The only solution to end their suffering is to create safe passages, to give the people their right to move freely – and for those who are stuck here to finally open the islands. This is why every memorial for us is combined with the promise to tear down the borders that killed them and to create another, a welcoming Europe.

As dozens of migrants continue to land daily on the shores of eastern Aegean islands, and tensions rise in reception centers, local communities are becoming increasingly divided over growing migrant populations.

A total of 438 people arrived on the islands aboard smuggling boats from Turkey in the first three days of the week, with another 175 people arriving on the islet of Oinousses yesterday morning.

The latter were transferred to a center on nearby Chios which is very cramped with 1,600 people living in facilities designed to host 850.

The situation is worse on Samos, where a reception center designed to host 700 people is accommodating 2,850.

A group of 234 refugees boarded a charter flight from Athens to Lyon, France on Wednesday as part of the European Union’s relocation program, while dozens more migrants, deemed to belong to vulnerable groups, were transferred by ferry from the islands of the Aegean to mainland Greece.

The group relocated to Lyon comprised 132 adults and 102 minors, 190 of them Syrian nationals and the remainder from Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

In comments made at Athens International Airport, which he visited to see off the refugees, Migration Minister Yiannis Mouzalas said that a total of 22,000 asylum seekers have been relocated from Greece to other European nations over the past year and a half, and that another 5,000 resettlements are pending

With Turkey being one of the items on the agenda of the EU summit starting on Thursday (19 October), AFP is reporting that migrants are still coming to Greek islands despite the EU-Turkey deal to stem the arrival of refugees from Turkish territory.

Dozens of tents stud a hillside surrounded by olive trees, while children in flimsy sandals – the lucky ones wearing socks – play on mounds of stinking garbage as the sun rises on the Greek island of Samos.

Almost two years since more than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe, thousands are still living in squalor after risking their lives crossing the Aegean Sea.

“We arrived last night, 42 of us on a small boat,” said Naween Rahimi, an Afghan from Kabul, who is travelling with his wife.

“Some Chinese sold me a tent for 10 euros,” he said, adding that he had worked as an interpreter for the American military.

Tricksen sie – oder tricksen sie nicht?

Am Wochenende erregte ein Beitrag der Zeitung Die Welt über die Flüchtlingskrise Aufsehen. Die Reportage von Manuel Bewarder und Christoph B. Schiltz warf den griechischen Behörden offen Betrug bei den Flüchtlingszahlen vor. Dem Bericht zufolge würden gefälschte Zahlen über in Griechenland befindliche Flüchtlinge dabei helfen, einen Menschenschmuggel gen Deutschland zu überdecken.

Auch wenn zwischen Deutschland und Griechenland eine Reihe weiterer Staaten liegt, durch welche die Flüchtlinge Richtung Norden ziehen müssen, haben die Autoren einige Indizien für ihre gewagte These. Denn schließlich gibt es eine nicht erklärbare Diskrepanz zwischen den Flüchtlingsstatistiken der griechischen Regierung und denen des UN-Flüchtlingshochkommissariats hinsichtlich der im Land befindlichen Flüchtlinge und Immigranten.

Eine gewisse Übereinstimmung besteht lediglich hinsichtlich der Zahl der neu ins Land Kommenden. Hier stammen die Daten von den Polizeibehörden und der Frontex.

Pro Monat kommen 15.000 Asylsuchende nach Deutschland – meist über die Balkanroute. Damit das Durchwinken von Migranten nicht auffällt, präsentiert die Regierung in Athen bislang falsche Zahlen.

Die Balkanroute, erklären Politiker, sei dicht. Aber noch immer erreichen jeden Monat rund 15.000 Asylsuchende Deutschland – die meisten über die Balkanroute. Einer der wichtigsten Gründe dafür: EU-Mitgliedsstaaten wie Griechenland und Bulgarien sichern die Außengrenze bewusst nachlässig und winken Migranten entgegen den EU-Regeln weiter nach Mitteleuropa durch. Viele landen schließlich in Deutschland. Das zeigen Recherchen der WELT AM SONNTAG in Berlin und Brüssel.

Das Bundesinnenministerium erklärte offiziell: „Migrationsrelevante Feststellungen der Staaten entlang der Balkanroute sind ein Indiz für eine anhaltende Migrationauf dem Landweg aus Griechenland.“ Nahezu alle in Deutschland ankommenden Asylsuchenden seien zuvor in einem anderen Mitgliedsstaat gewesen. Statistische Auswertungen gebe es jedoch nicht.

In a series of letters to the Greek government, mayors and the Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDE) have raised the alarm bell over the congestion at hotspots hosting asylum seekers in the islands of the northeastern Aegean.

Moreover, Doctors Without Borders and other non-governmental organizations have decried the dire living condition at these reception centers that are having a dismal impact on the lives and health of asylum seekers.

On Thursday, a man attempted suicide at the VIAL hotspot on Chios which is severely overcrowded with 1,964 people while the center’s capacity is 800.

Belgrad/Athen/Wien – Mehr als 90 Prozent der jungen Asylsuchenden, die über die Balkanroute flüchten, sind Gewalt ausgesetzt. Dafür sind in den wenigsten Fällen Schmuggler oder Menschenhändler verantwortlich, wie ein Bericht der Hilfsorganisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen (MSF) zeigt. 76 Prozent der 15- bis 25-Jährigen, die im ersten Halbjahr 2017 in den psychologischen Einrichtungen der NGO betreut wurden, berichten von Gewalt durch Behördenvertreter – vor allem EU-Grenzbeamte. Knapp die Hälfte aller Gewaltberichte handelt von bulgarischen Grenzschützern, die die jungen Flüchtlinge und Migranten verprügeln, Hunde auf sie hetzen oder mit Pfefferspray besprühen.

Ein Bündnis verschiedener Flüchtlingsinitiativen in Griechenland hat einen gemeinsamen Aufruf an die griechischen Behörden veröffentlicht: „Der Winter bricht an, auch für die Flüchtlinge in Griechenland. Letztes Jahr sind bereits sechs Menschen wegen der katastrophalen Zustände in einem Flüchtlingslager auf der Insel Lesbos ums Leben gekommen – das darf sich nicht wiederholen“, heißt es in der Stellungnahme, die am Mittwochabend an die Öffentlichkeit ging.
