In der französischen Hafenstadt Calais wurden bei Massenschlägereien unter Migranten mehrere Menschen verletzt, einige von ihnen schwer. Fünf Flüchtlinge mussten wegen lebensbedrohlichen Schusswunden behandelt werden. 18 weitere seien durch Schläge mit Eisenstangen verletzt worden, so die Staatsanwaltschaft.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A government plan to deport tens of thousands of African migrants has sparked an unexpected backlash from liberal Israelis and their American Jewish allies who say Israel — established in the wake of the Holocaust — should never be turning away those in need.

The showdown could come to a head on April 1, when the state plans to start expelling Africans, some of whom have been in Israel for years and have children who know no other home, to an uncertain fate.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – A group of migrants, including 11 Syrians, were rescued on Tuesday from an Italian fishing trawler in the Adriatic Sea and taken to Montenegro, police said.

Montenegro’s coastal security sent out a rescue team after Erica, a 15 metre-long (50 feet) vessel, put out a distress signal 17 nautical miles (31 km) off the coast, said Safet Kocan, director of maritime safety.

The Italian ship with migrants on board was finally moored in the Montenegrin port of Zelenika, inside the Boka Kotorska bay.

Allein am vergangenen Samstag wurden bei fünf verschiedenen Einsätzen in internationalen Gewässern vor der libyschen Küste rund 850 Flüchtlinge gerettet. Mindestens drei Frauen aus Afrika sind laut der italienischen Küstenwache ertrunken; weitere 30 Personen wurden vermisst. Bei einem der Rettungseinsätze war auch das Schiff Aquarius der Hilfsorganisation SOS Méditerranée dabei, die mit der italienischen Küstenwache zusammenarbeitet.

Die Seenotrettungsdienste kennen die Stimme von Helena Maleno: „Zwei Boote in der Meerenge von Gibraltar mit 33 und 45 Personen an Bord brauchen Hilfe.“ So oder ähnlich lauten die Anrufe der 47-jährigen spanischen Menschenrechtsaktivistin, Journalistin und Schriftstellerin, die im marokkanischen Tanger lebt. Viele derer, die die gefährliche Überfahrt von Afrika nach Europa wagen, haben für den Notfall Malenos Nummer dabei. Sie ist bekannt dafür, alles in Bewegung zu setzen, damit die spanischen und marokkanischen Rettungsdienste ausrücken. Jetzt droht der Gründerin der NGO „Caminando Fronteras“ (Grenzgänge) lebenslänglich Haft. Die marokkanische Justiz ermittelt gegen Maleno wegen Verstoß gegen das Einwanderungsgesetz und wegen des Verdachtes, Mitglied einer kriminellen Vereinigung zu sein.

Some key points:

  • The number of detainees [in Libyan detention centres] went down in December [2017] when thousands of people were mass repatriated to their countries of origin by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
  • The majority of physical and mental health problems requiring medical assistance still directly relate to the substandard conditions of detention.
  • It is not possible to provide meaningful medical care in a system of arbitrary detention that causes harm and suffering.
  • Italian ships have been deployed in Libyan territorial waters as part of a broader European strategy to seal off the coast of Libya and “contain” refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants in a country where they are exposed to extreme and widespread violence and exploitation.
  • The MSF team onboard Aquarius witnessed refugees and migrants aboard unseaworthy vessels being intercepted by the Libyan Coastguard in international waters as EU military assets at the scene looked on.
  • Although these interceptions are presented as “rescue operations” and are celebrated by the Libyan Coastguard and their EU partners, the reality is that migrants and refugees are not being returned to a port of safety.
  • [T]here are several entities operating along Libya’s vast coastline that claim to be the Libyan Coastguard. Contact points on land and at sea were unclear, as was the chain of command.

During the height of the refugee crisis, when far more refugees were in Bulgaria, a riot erupted at the refugee camp in the Bulgarian town of Harmanli. A total of 21 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, who allegedly took part in the riot, are now being indicted by the local District Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecution accuses the refugees, four of whom are minors, to be responsible for “hooliganism with boldness and cynicism” and for the destruction of property. The damage supposedly amounts to 85,000 leva.

The cause of the riot in Harmanli, which broke out on November 24, 2016, will not be part of the trial. Neither will police officers who allegedly attacked and beat refugees who were not even part of the riot.
