Protesters shout down SYRIZA MP

Local residents of Chios have burst into the city hall, while others gathered outside the building demanding the removal of the refugees and illegal immigrants from the island, Wednesday night.

The Chios council had convened a meeting on the refugee crisis earlier Wednesday, April 6, when the meeting was abruptly interrupted by angered citizens who charged into the building to protest against the ongoing situation with the refugees and illegal immigrants on the island. Members of solidarity groups also gathered at the city hall and faced off against the other group. From the skirmishes that broke out 2 people were injured, while 3 TV operators of state broadcaster ERT were attacked.

Nell’Europa dei fili spinati e dei controlli alla frontiera del Brennero, c’è spazio per scendere ancora più in basso. Precisamente al confine tra la Bulgaria e la Turchia, dove la recinzione installata dal governo di Sofia – per impedire l’ingresso dei migranti – evidentemente a qualcuno non basta. Da qualche mese bande di «cacciatori di migranti» (così si autodefiniscono) sono entrati in azione organizzando delle vere e proprie ronde. Si muovono in gruppi di dieci-quindici persone, girano per i boschi a bordo di quad e jeep. Vanno a caccia di profughi. Ufficialmente non sono armati: «Ci bastano le mani», dicono questi energumeni che hanno nel wrestler semi-professionista Dinko Valev il loro leader.

Am 4. April wurde die zwischen der EU und der Türkei vereinbarte Übereinkunft zur Flüchtlingsrückführung erstmals umgesetzt. Warnungen von zahlreichen Menschenrechtsorganisationen, aber auch von UN-Organisationen wurden ignoriert. Denn für den Großteil der verantwortlichen Politiker, einschließlich der bis weit ins linke Milieu mit Lob bedachten Bundeskanzlerin Merkel, ist das Abkommen dann ein Erfolg, wenn die Zahlen der Migranten in Kerneuropa zurückgehen.

Der Bundesinnenminister will Abkommen über die Rücknahme von Flüchtlingen auch mit Ländern Nordafrikas schließen. Dafür soll die EU Menschen von dort direkt aufnehmen.

Die Europäische Union (EU) soll nach Vorstellung von Bundesinnenminister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) auch mit nordafrikanischen Staaten über Abschiebeabkommen nach dem Vorbild des EU-Türkei-Deals verhandeln. „Wir werden auf Sicht gesehen über Modelle zu diskutieren haben, ähnlich wie wir sie mit der Türkei praktiziert haben“, sagte de Maizière in Wien.

Der Mechanismus soll dabei praktisch übernommen werden. Die Vereinbarungen würden die Abschiebungen in die entsprechenden Staaten und im Gegenzug die Aufnahme „humanitärer Kontingente“ in die EU bedeuten, sagte de Maizière. „Diese Methode ist richtig, die sollten wir auch für die zentrale Mittelmeer-Route von Nordafrika aus über Italien anwenden.“

Before being deported to Turkey, the last refugees must first be brought to a detention center. But they don’t want to go. Some are threatening to commit suicide. Panagiotis Kouparanis reports from Lesbos.

Although one out of six people on the island of Lesbos is a migrant or a refugee, they’ve disappeared from sight. They could be seen everywhere up until two weeks ago. But everything changed on March 20 with the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal, which led to their deportation onto the mainland. Newcomers – barely having left their boats – are now being transported directly by police buses to the Moria detention center.

Thirteen of 202 people returned to Turkey under EU migration deal may not have had chance to claim for asylum

Some of the first people to be deported from Europe under the terms of the EU-Turkey migration deal may have been deported by mistake, the UN refugee agency has said.

Greek police “forgot” to process the asylum claims of 13 of the 202 asylum seekers sent back to Turkey on Monday, the first day the deal was put into practice, according to Vincent Cochetel, director of UNHCR’s Europe bureau.

On Tuesday, EU officials repeatedly avoided saying whether they will investigate the allegation, which threatens the legitimacy of the deportation deal.

Greece has postponed the return of the next group of migrants to Turkey under a deal with the European Union until Friday, a Turkish government official said on Tuesday, with no other deportees expected before then.

A first group of migrants, mostly Pakistani and Afghan, were shipped back to Turkey on Monday under the deal with the EU, which will see Ankara take back all migrants and refugees who cross the Aegean to enter Greece illegally. [Reuters]

Today, with neoliberalism established across the planet, it is clear that capitalist relations are being intensified, together with nationalism and patriarchy. Fences and borders are being built not only in the physical space, but also across social relationships. However, the movements and transnational struggles of migrants are constantly producing new cracks in the system, new thresholds and pathways into an unexplored world.

More specifically, transnational and global agreements further liberalize “free” markets and the lifting of tariff restrictions further ensure property rights for the wealthy. At the same time the former social contract of the welfare state is breaking down and the neoliberal state is claiming the role of manager-partner of companies, keeping for itself solely the army and the police in order to retain some of its administrative and legislative power. Gender oppression, racism and fascism are being remobilized for the control of populations.
