The last issue of Crossing Borders! was published more than one year ago, but we still continue and the new issue is dedicated to young migrants who were born, grew up or are in transit in Europe. They live on their own skin the social effects of European immigration and externalisation policy, but they are also protagonists of new forms of resistance and prepare the future of migrant struggles in Europe and against the borders. One year after the riots in the UK, a generation with a history of migration took the centre of the scenes, transforming a condition defined as ‚marginal‘ by social assistants and politicians into a central one. The so called ’second generations‘ refuse to remain hidden in the small spaces imposed to them. Thus, the objective of this new issue is to offer a European perspective that, while telling of specific moments of struggle or conditions of resistance, is capable of crossing the borders of different legislations and particular situations, enabling a general vision of the conditions of migrant youth. The new generations in movement challenge the social borders created by institutionalized racism and the reproduction of exploitation every day, that we wish to present and narrate these diverse experiences of struggles. From the UK to Patras, crossing Italy, Germany or France, thousands young are forcing the borders of citizenships and the States, the borders of their social exploitation. They are living crossing the borders…
Riots in black and white. London, one year after
In the summer 2011 hundreds of people from poor areas of the UK, many of whom were British citizens with migration background, got involved in riots with the police, streets fires and looting. The riots started in the North of London on the 5th of August to then spread to other cities in England including Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester and Salford. They were expressions of the racial and social segregation experienced especially by the youth in segregated neighborhoods across the country.

Die Verkäufer des algerischen Benzins sind zahlreicher als die Grillstände geworden. (…) In Tunesien macht die informelle Ökonomie 30% des BSP aus, hier mehr als 50 %.“

Malta Expresses Interest in Use of Drones for Migrant Surveillance at Sea

Malta Today reported last week that the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have expressed interest in benefitting from a European Union-sponsored project involving the deployment of unmanned drones to assist in migrant patrols at sea. An AFM spokesman told Malta Today that while the armed forces are fully involved in the development of the system it is however not participating in the testing of such drones.

The connection between the attacks on immigrants and the social/economic situation in Greece:
- The first wave of attacks against immigrants was a counter-insurgency response to the December ’08 riots in the spring of ’09 (in fact, before the NoBorder camp on Lesvos). Then there was talk of FRONTEX, of building the wall in Evros and new detention centres across the land.
- There was a small interval during the first months of the PASOK government (with the voting of the „citizenship bill“, and Vougias‘ decision to shut down Pagani). The 300 immigrant workers‘ 44-day hunger strike in January 2011 pushed back the tide for a while.
- The recession continued. Ever since the introduction of the IMF structural adjustments (i.e. the politics of destruction), the scapegoating of immigrants has been elevated to a central governing technique of the State.
- In March 2012, while a non-elected coalition government was in power (comprising of the collapsing PASOK, right and far-right wing ministers, as well as a banker prime minister), two of its most prominent (PASOK) ministers, that of Health and that of Public Order, set the tone for a full-scale onslaught against immigrants, legitimizing and encouraging a populist-fascist movement …
The problem is not only that 7% of the (valid) votes in May and June 2012 went to the neo-nazi party, but that the official rhetoric of the government and the mass media is openly fascist …
and also, that half of the police vote for the neo-nazi party …. (so one does not have to wonder whether the immigrants are being treated badly by the police here – or whether fascists ever get arrested by the police, since they are largely the same people …)
There is no doubt that the rise of fascist populism and immigrant scapegoating is directly connected to the IMF structural adjustment plans

Ein erstes Lager für Flüchtlinge aus dem Niger wurde ohne Verankündigung am 07.08.2012 ausserhalb von Oran eröffnet. Es wird als „centre de recasement“ bezeichnet und liegt im Bezirk Boufatis im Südosten der Region Oran.
Die Polizei hat zusammen mit der Leitung der Sozialabteilung der Kommune von Oran und dem algerische Roten Halbmond Oran 115 Flüchtlinge aus dem Niger dort untergebracht. Diese waren kurz vor Ramadan-Beginn aus dem Niger vor Hunger und Gewalt geflohen und hatten nun in Oran in der Nähe des Bahnhofs im Stadtteil Yaghmoracen auf den Gehwegen von Almosen gelebt. Es handelt sich um 63 Kinder, 48 Frauen und 3 Männer.
Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich bei dem neuen Zentrum nicht um eine „Neuansiedlung“, wie der benutzte euphemistische Begriff nahelegt, sondern um eine temporäre Unterbringung – oder gar um ein Internierungslager.
Bislang gibt es keine öffentlich bekannten, permanent betriebenen Flüchtlingslager an der algerischen Küste, wohl aber in der algerischen Sahara. Algerien hat keinen gesetzlich verankerten Flüchtlingsschutz, Flüchtlinge gelten in Algerien als „irreguläre MigrantInnen“. Angesichts der Zunahme syrischer Flüchtlinge wies die algerische Menschenrechtsliga kürzlich darauf hin.

Vor wenigen Tagen hatte Leoni – deutscher Kabelhersteller für Autos in Tunesien – angekündigt, demnächst ein Werk in Tunesien zu schließen. Die Fabrik Ezzahra bei Sousse beschäftigt derzeit 600 ArbeiterInnen. Die Werksleitung hat das Angebot gemacht, Beschäftigte in einem 200 km entfernten Leoni-Werk zu übernehmen. Das Angebot wird als nicht seriös eingestuft.
UGTT und das Regionalbüro der tunesischen Menschenrechtsliga protestieren gegen die geplante Werksschließung.
