Since 2013, Welcome to Europe (w2eu) and Youth Without Borders (JOG) organise journeys for young refugees, to make it possible for them to return to the place where they had first reached Europe: The Island of Lesvos/Greece. This year, the ‘back to the border’ journey turned into a horror trip, especially, for all of us who were without European identity cards. Twice, the police and coast guard didn’t let us take the ferry to Piraeus (Athens) and leave the island as they said they had to re-check the asylum seekers cards for their genuinity – a paper issued by the Greek government itself. We observed dozens of people who were pulled out of the passengers queues at the airport while providing for passports or Greek aliens documents and dozens more who were unsuccessfully trying to leave from the island from the port along with us even though some of them were living and working in Greece for years.

Die Bewohner von Eleonas haben sich eingerichtet. Schlichte Stoffstücke schmücken die kleinen Fenster, in manchen Rahmen baumeln Blumentöpfe an Wollfäden. Aus der Ferne erinnern die hellen Container mit ihren roten Dächern an kleine Häuser in Vorstadtsiedlungen.

Ein Mädchen, nicht älter als zehn Jahre, fährt mit dem Rad an einem großen Zelt vorbei bis zum Container der SOS-Kinderdörfer. Auf ein Plakat haben die Mitarbeiter Dorfregeln geschrieben, wie sie es nennen: „Imagine your dream, create your happiness, live your life.“ Sie haben den Spruch um eine vierte Regel ergänzt: „Enjoy every moment“ – genieße jeden Moment.

In Marokko gehen wieder Zehntausende auf die Strasse. Sie stossen sich an Polizeiwillkür und Korruption.

Der ungeklärte Tod eines Fischhändlers hat am Wochenende in Marokko Proteste auflodern lassen, die an die Aufstände von 2011 erinnern. Am Freitag war der Fischhändler Mouhcine Fikri in der Mittelmeerstadt Hoceima vor den Augen vieler Umstehender in der Presse eines Kehrichtautos zerquetscht worden. Der Vorgang wurde gefilmt und kursierte im Internet, was eine massive Protestwelle auslöste. Tausende gingen in Hoceima auf die Strasse, aber auch in Casablanca, in der Hauptstadt Rabat und anderen Städten kam es zu Kundgebungen, an denen summarisch den Behörden die Schuld am Tod Fikris gegeben wurde.

Allegations that young family was deported despite lodging asylum claims in Greece weaken basis for EU-Turkey deal

A group of Syrian refugees including a couple with four young children detained in Turkey say they were tricked into being deported from Greece last month without having their asylum claims processed.

In the first case of its kind since the start of the EU-Turkey migration pact, at least eight Syrians were allegedly sent back to Turkey in October despite lodging asylum claims in Greece.

The allegations weaken the legal basis for the EU-Turkey deal, which was reached in March on the assumption that all refugees arriving in Greece would have access to a fair asylum procedure.

Les éléments des gardes-côtes de Béni-Saf, dans la wilaya de Aïn Temouchent, ont mis, hier, en échec, une tentative d’émigration clandestine de 18 jeunes, apprend-on. L’opération a eu lieu au large du port de Béni-Saf. Partis la veille du littoral temouchentois, les candidats à l’émigration clandestine, âgés entre 18 et 30 ans, dont la plupart sont originaires des wilayas d’Aïn Temouchent et d’Oran, naviguaient en direction des côtes de la péninsule ibérique, à bord d’une embarcation a ajouté notre source. Après les procédures d’usage, dont la visite médicale, les ‘harraga‘ ont été remis aux services de la gendarmerie nationale de Béni-Saf, avant d’être présentés devant la justice.

Exclusive: Report author says politicians have been ‘wantonly ignoring’ reality to maintain ill-informed government positions

Britain and other European nations are making the refugee crisis worse by forcing people fleeing conflict and persecution to undertake covert and treacherous journeys, a report has found.

The damning report by the Unravelling the Mediterranean Migration Crisis (Medmig) project, seen exclusively by The Independent ahead of its release, concluded that the refusal to open up legal routes for those seeking safety in Europe has increased demand for people smuggling on ever more dangerous routes.

Operations to combat the thriving trade has driven the use of smaller and less seaworthy boats to cross the Mediterranean, contributing to the deaths of almost 4,000 migrants so far in 2016 – now the deadliest year ever for refugees.
