As authorities seek to improve living conditions for migrants at reception centers around the country amid forecasts of another cold snap later this week, a 20-year-old Afghan man died of hypothermia early on Tuesday after crossing the Evros River in northern Greece.
The man’s body was found in a field near the Greek border town of Didymoteicho after police were alerted by another Afghan who said he had traveled with him across the river.
Temperatures in the area plunged to -14 Celsius (7 Fahrenheit) on Monday night and are expected to drop even further from Thursday.

Yesterday, the Bulgarian border police found the corpse of a woman near the village of Ravadinovo in southeastern Bulgaria. A group of 31 migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia, which was detained one day before, said to the authorities they had to leave the woman, because she was too weak to go on. Two other members of the group, 14-and 16-year old teenagers, were brought to hospital because of frostbite.
This is the first human being who was killed by the European border system in Bulgaria, in 2017. Bordermonitoring Bulgaria (BMB) argues that the new installed European Border and Coast Guard Agency, which came into force on October the 6th 2016 at Bulgaria’s Kapitan Andreevo Border Checkpoint, cannot stop incidents like this. Therefore, it is tremendously important to create legal passages to prevent these kind of tragedies.

Anschuldigungen und Nachforschungen folgen auf die Ausschreitungen der Neujahrsnacht am Grenzzaun der spanischen Exklave Ceuta in Nordafrika. Es habe zwei Tote gegeben, berichtet der katholische Erzbischof von Tanger, der spanische Franziskaner Santiago Agrelo, nach einem Augenschein am Ort des Geschehens. Über hundert Migranten seien zudem rechtswidrig daran gehindert worden, Asylanträge zu stellen, rügt Amnesty International.

Hundreds of people have been buried outside Zarzis, Tunisia, after drowning while attempting to cross the sea.

Zarzis, Tunisia – „I’ll sometimes get a knock on my door at night when a new body has been found,“ says Chemseddine Marzoug. „Autumn and winter, when the winds are stronger, is when most of the bodies wash ashore.“
Marzoug stands on a hilly wasteland outside the city of Zarzis in southern Tunisia. The sand is spotted with small bushes and pieces of rubbish, and in the distance are plantations of olive trees.

About 100 people are missing and feared dead after two boats capsized off Italy, increasing the estimated death toll among migrants in the Mediterranean this year to at least 5,000, a record, UN agencies have said.
Deaths linked to Mediterranean crossings by migrants trying to reach Europe have spiked in 2016. Last year, 3,771 deaths were recorded as more than a million people made the journey, mostly from Turkey to Greece. This year, about 360,000 people have crossed, most between Libya and Italy, with far more deadly results.

Immer öfter starten Flüchtlinge über Ägypten ihre lebensgefährliche Reise über das Meer. Der Ausgangspunkt der Schlepper-Maschinerie des Schreckens übers Mittelmeer hat sich von Libyen verlagert nach Ägypten, ein gewissenloses Geschäft mit dem Leben der Allerärmsten auf der Flucht vor Not und Elend. Die Methode ist immer dieselbe mit immer denselben entsetzlichen Folgen: Ein schwimmendes Wrack oder ein geflicktes Schlauchboot wird vollgepfercht bis ins letzte Eck, fährt dann aufs Meer, meldet per Funk Seenot und ruft Rettungsschiffe der EU.

Tunisian Mohammed Ali Malek found guilty of manslaughter after worst Mediterranean maritime refugee disaster
A Tunisian migrant-smuggler behind the worst maritime disaster in the Mediterranean in recent history has been found guilty of manslaughter by an Italian court and faces 18 years in jail.
About 700 people, including young children, were killed in April 2015 after Mohammed Ali Malek slammed an overcrowded fishing boat into a Portuguese merchant ship that was attempting a rescue of the passengers.

Le ultime vittime sono due giovani eritrei, un ragazzo e una ragazza, partiti da Verona e rimasti schiacciati in Austria, il 3 dicembre, dal Tir sotto al quale si erano nascosti per passare il confine. Le ultime vittime del “sistema Italia” per l’assistenza a profughi e migranti. Dall’inizio dell’anno si sono contati oltre 172 mila arrivi. E’ il flusso più alto mai registrato. Di contro, ci sono soltanto 23 mila posti nella rete di accoglienza Sprar, l’unico canale che apre un percorso di inserimento sociale. Meno di 2 mila, rispetto alle 60 mila previste entro il settembre 2017, risultano le partenze verso altri paesi europei, in base al programma di relocation. Bassa anche la percentuale dei migranti per i quali si è concluso l’iter della richiesta di asilo o comunque di una forma di protezione internazionale.

RABAT – Al menos 38 personas fueron rescatadas con vida tras el naufragio de una patera en la noche del miércoles en las costas de Alhucemas, dijeron fuentes policiales en la zona. Además, al menos cuatro personas murieron y tres permanecen desaparecidas, según las fuentes. Los cuatro cadáveres, todos ellos de emigrantes subsaharianos, aparecieron en las playas conocidas como Costa Matadero y Cala Bonita, desde donde los cuerpos fueron trasladados al depósito del Hospital Mohamed V de la ciudad.
