Anti-Islam group says it plans to ‘guard the borders of Europe’

A far-right organisation has launched a boat in the Mediterraneanto confront ships rescuing refugees and send them “back to Africa”.

Defend Europe, a group linked to the European anti-Islam and anti-immigrant “identitarian” movement, is currently sailing a 25-crew 422 tonne vessel to the Libyan coast in a bid to block search-and-rescue vessels operated by humanitarian organisations.

More than 85,000 refugees and migrants, most of them sub-Saharan Africans, have been rescued and brought to Italy this year, with fears the total could reach 200,000 by December. More than 2,000 have died in crossings.

NGOs and advocacy groups have expressed alarm at Defend Europe’s mission, telling The Independent that if it carries out its aims it will “get in the way of genuine lifesaving efforts” and risk further loss of life.

MILAN — When people think of racism and xenophobia in Italy, what comes to mind is usually prejudice toward Arabs, Africans and other easily identifiable minorities. But Romanians have become one of the major targets of xenophobic abuse here — despite the fact that the two countries are both European Union members that have similar languages and cultures.

A high-profile example of that prejudice occurred earlier in April, when a prominent Italian politician falsely accused Romania of exporting almost half of its criminals to Italy, then blamed the European Union for making it possible.

“Italy has imported 40 percent of [their] criminals from Romania. While Romania is importing from Italy our firms and our capital. What an amazing deal the EU is!,” wrote Luigi Di Maio, the vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Italy’s parliament, and one of the leading representatives of the populist Five Star Movement, in a controversial Facebook post.

Als die Flüchtlingskrise im Herbst 2015 ihren Höhepunkt erreicht, fährt Jean-Baptiste Vendeville zu einer Autobahnbrücke in Calais. Er rollt ein paar Meter dunklen Stoff aus, befestigt sie auf dem Brückengeländer, die weiße Schrift gut sichtbar für die Autofahrer. Dann postiert er sich dahinter und fuchtelt mit der Trikolore herum.

„Was ich auf das Banner geschrieben habe?“ Der heute 26-jährige Vendeville sitzt vor dem rotgeziegelten Rathaus der nordfranzösischen Stadt. „Illegale, es reicht!“ Er richtet sich selbstbewusst auf. Der hellblonde Versicherungsangestellte kommt direkt aus der Arbeit, trägt gestreiftes Hemd und Krawatte. Er will bald ein Haus kaufen, eine Familie gründen. Aber zuallererst will Vendeville eines: Marine Le Pen zur Präsidentin Frankreichs machen. Die Chefin des Front National liegt in Umfragen vorne. Der erste Wahlgang am kommenden Sonntag dürfte ein Triumph für Le Pen werden.

Italian police have clashed with protesters in Naples amid a visit by the leader of the anti-immigrant Northern League party.

Riot police fired tear gas and used water cannon against masked groups armed with Molotov cocktails, local media report.

The protesters were marching through the southern city in opposition to the Northern League’s anti-EU policies.

The party, led by Matteo Salvini, is looking to gain support in the region.

The demonstrations in the city were largely peaceful, but violence broke out after a small group of individuals with their faces covered threw bottles and other objects at police.

A once-warm welcome is turning tepid for a Syrian refugee family in Bulgaria.

The sign on the green door of a small house rented by Fahim Jaber and Fatima Bataihi in the Bulgarian town of Elin Pelin, located some 30 kilometres east of the capital Sofia, says “Welcome”.

Inside the house, the smell of Arabic coffee and freshly-baked cheese manakish – traditional Syrian hors d’oeuvre – greets guests who braved the rain to visit the middle-aged couple from Aleppo in the early hours of February 25.

Jaber and Batahi were warmly greeted when they first arrived in the town of 7,000 in 2016 along with their youngest son. However, the atmosphere in the town changed mid-February after Mayor Ivailo Simeonov from nationalistic coalition VMRO-New Bulgaria announced that they, as Muslims from Syria, would not be welcome. National elections are set to be held in Bulgaria on March 26 amid an apparent growth in right wing populism on the European continent.

Mehr als 3.500 Mal sind Flüchtlinge oder ihre Heime im vergangenen Jahr angegriffen worden. Dabei wurden 560 Menschen verletzt, darunter 43 Kinder.

Im vergangenen Jahr hat es in Deutschland mehr als 3.500 Angriffe auf Flüchtlinge und Flüchtlingsunterkünfte gegeben. Dabei wurden 560 Menschen verletzt, unter ihnen 43 Kinder, wie die Zeitungen der Funke-Mediengruppe unter Berufung auf eine Antwort des Bundesinnenministeriums auf eine Parlamentsanfrage berichteten.

Demnach wurden 2.545 Angriffe auf Flüchtlinge außerhalb ihrer Unterkünfte gezählt. Hinzu kamen 988 Angriffe auf Flüchtlingsheime – das waren nur geringfügig weniger als im Vorjahr mit 1031 Angriffen. Zudem wurden 217 Mal Hilfsorganisationen oder freiwillige Asyl-Helfer attackiert.

L’implication de la Tunisie dans la lutte contre l’immigration de citoyens tunisiens ou subsahariens en direction de l’Europe n’est pas un fait nouveau. La politique des autorités actuelles ne se distingue guère de celle qui avait été suivie par l’ancien régime. La collaboration avec les politiques racistes des Etats européens, car c’est bien de cela qu’il s’agit, dément les vigoureuses déclarations antiracistes de nos responsables politiques au lendemain de la brutale agression dont ont été victimes des étudiants congolais.

Notre Premier ministre doit se rendre ce lundi en Allemagne pour une visite officielle. Au centre des entretiens qu’il doit avoir avec Angela Merkel, la question de l’immigration. Il y a quelques jours, le président de la République se trouvait en Italie. Il a déclaré devant le Sénat : « Comme pour la lutte contre le terrorisme, le phénomène de l’immigration clandestine ne peut être endigué que par une stratégie globale commune ». Ce qui en langage profane pourrait être traduit ainsi : donnez-nous de l’argent et vous ne verrez plus une tête bronzée débarquer sur vos côtes.
