Navy picks up 300 more asylum seekers

The Libyan navy yesterday picked up almost 300 asylum seekers in two separate incidents just off the coast.
In the first interception, to the north-west of Garabulli, on Thursday morning, a naval vessel spotted and intercepted a broken-down rubber raft carrying 109 passengers. Navy spokesman Ayoud Ghasem told the Libya Herald that the majority of people on board the inflatable was from West Africa.

Today he published his last article, with definite evidence that Italian rescue agency was informed of the boats ‚ distress as of 12.26, passed on the coordination to Malta, and did not deploy any of its several vessels nearbye to rescue the migrants until after 17.00, when the boat sank. Italy claims Malta didn’t ask it to do so…

Festung Europa: EU will Migration im Mittelmeer mit Kriegsschiffen eindämmen
Zusammen mit der EU-Grenzpolizei FRONTEX und Italien sollen Militärs der EU-Mitgliedstaaten Flüchtlinge aufspüren. Auch Libyen, Ägypten und Tunesien könnten mitmachen
Nach den Schiffsunglücken vor Lampedusa Anfang Oktober blieb auch die Europäische Union nicht untätig: Auf Vorschlag Italiens wurde die Angelegenheit zunächst auf das Treffen der EU-Innenminister in Luxemburg gehievt. Im Ergebnis richteten die Minister eine „Taskforce Mittelmeer“ ein, die von der EU-Kommission geführt wird. Ihr gehören neben den Mitgliedstaaten und weiteren Agenturen auch der Europäische Auswärtige Dienst (EAD) an. Der EAD ist für die Gemeinsame Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik (GSVP) zuständig, also die Gemengelage zwischen Außenpolitik und Militäreinsätzen.

Nave della Marina militareLa nave militare slovena “Triglav” sarà a disposizione delle autorità italiane dal 15 dicembre a sostegno delle operazioni di soccorso agli immigrati nel mare di Lampedusa. La nave resterà in zona a Lampedusa fino alla fine di gennaio. I compiti svolti dalla nave “Triglav’” saranno quelli di sorveglianza e di salvataggio dei migranti. Successivamente per la “Triglav” vi sarà una nuova missione sotto la bandiera Onu nel Libano. Il costo dell’operazione a Lampedusa è valutata in circa mezzo milione di euro. Italian navy arrests 16 human traffickers off Libya
ROME – The Italian navy said Sunday it has arrested 16 human traffickers aboard a so-called „mother ship“ in international waters off Libya.
Submarine surveillance ahead of Saturday’s raid was „of particular importance, notably for gathering proof“ against the traffickers, it said in a statement.
The fishing boat served as a staging area from which the traffickers dispatched their clients – Syrian migrants seeking asylum or a better life – aboard smaller, often rickety vessels to destinations in southern Europe.
The boat had been under surveillance, including by drones, hi-tech radars, night-vision equipment and the submarine, under stepped-up operations launched after two shipwrecks last month claimed some 500 lives.
It was located some 500 kilometers [300 miles] southeast of Sicily, near Libya, the navy said.
Also Saturday, the navy rescued 176 Syrian migrants from one of the boats dispatched by the „mother ship,“ it said.
The navy said the „mother ship“ itself had sunk after it took on water while being towed towards an Italian port.

(Wikimedia)ROME — A fleet of Italian Navy vessels led by the aircraft carrier Cavour is about to set off on an unusual trip around the Middle East and Africa that will combine crew training and diplomacy with a privately funded sales trip for Italian industry.
Departing from Italy on Nov. 13, the Cavour will be loaded with sales teams from defense companies such as Finmeccanica, Fincantieri, Elettronica and Beretta, turning the vessel into a “large defense show like Le Bourget,” said Italian Defense Minister Mario Mauro at a conference announcing the mission on Nov. 5.
In der Nacht vom 25./26.10.2013 wurden 95 syrische Flüchtlinge von dem italienischen Kriegsschiff Chimera im Kanal von Sizilien gerettet. An Bord des Marineschiffes raubten ihnen die Militärs ihr Bargeld und Wertgegenstände im Wert von ca. 100.000,- Euro.
Sie wurden an Bord systematisch durchsucht und mit Metallsonden gescannt. Geld und Wertgegenstände wurden ihnen abgenommen. An Land erstatteten 30 der Flüchtlinge eine Anzeige.

Elle a débuté le 18 octobre 2013 dans le Canal de Sicile. Elle voit la participation active et l’utilisation de moyens de la Marine Militaire, l’Armée Italienne, les forces aériennes militaires, les carabinieri (gendarmes), la Guardia di Finanza, la Guardia Costiera e du personnel du Ministère de l’Intérieur/Police d’Etat.
A bord des bateaux militaires, depuis le 23 octobre , il y a aurait du personnel du Ministere de l’Intérieur avec des médiateurs qui feraient des opérations de identification des migrants en haut mer .
