Die beschauliche Hafenstadt Mytilene auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos ist ein bekanntes Touristenziel. Direkt an der Küste, im Zentrum des Ortes liegt der Saphous Platz, umringt von Palmen und Cafés, in denen Menschen ein und ausgehen.

Doch seit zwei Wochen hat sich das Bild verändert: Der zentrale Platz ist besetzt worden. Über fünfzig Menschen harren dort aus, unter ihnen viele Kinder, die auf dem Platz umhertoben. Sie trotzen dem nun einsetzenden Herbstwetter, das die Insel mit Stürmen und Regen heimsucht und schlafen mit dünnen Decken auf nacktem Steinboden. Die Menschen weigern sich, am Rande Europas unsichtbar zu bleiben. Sie kämpfen dagegen, nur wenige Kilometer von der Stadt Mytilene entfernt im Flüchtlingslager Moria hinter Stacheldraht interniert zu werden, fernab von jeglicher Öffentlichkeit.

La representante en España del Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR), Francesca Friz-Prguda, pide al Gobierno que articule „un plan coherente“ frente a las llegadas de migrantes a las costas españolas que permita responder a grandes afluencias como la de los últimos días en las costas de Murcia y Andalucía y que facilite infraestructuras adecuadas para la primera acogida de estas personas así como atención de sus necesidades.

„Vemos grandes lagunas tanto en los sistemas como en la infraestructura en los puntos de llegada. Faltan lugares donde hacer la primera reseña y el primer reconocimiento, también hay una situación bastante horrible en algunos calabozos tanto de tamaño como de infraestructura“, ha señalado Friz-Prguda en declaraciones a los medios en el marco de la presentación del libro apoyado por ACNUR ‚Mujer, Todos somos Una‘.

Des officiels du ministère des MRE et des affaires de la migration ont déclaré, hier à l’agence américaine Associated Press, qu’ils étudiaient la possibilité de rapatrier à nouveau des migrants marocains bloqués en Libye.

Une aide attendue. Dans une vidéo publiée en début de semaine, un Marocain ayant immigré clandestinement en Libye avait poussé un cri de détresse depuis l’un des centres de détention du gouvernement libyen, demandant aux autorités d’intervenir pour assurer son rapatriement et celui de ses „232“ compatriotes.

„Nous sommes les seuls encore ici“, témoignait le jeune clandestin, selon qui les étrangers de toutes les autres nationalités ont déjà été évacués. „Aucun responsable marocain n’est venu nous voir, ni ne nous a appelés, pour s’enquérir de notre situation“, dénonçait-il , affirmant que plusieurs d’entre eux avaient entamé une grève de la faim.

The European Union’s (EU) support for Libya’s Coast Guard which has resulted in thousands of migrants being detained in “horrific” conditions inside Libya is “inhuman,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Tuesday.

Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein sounded the alarm after a probe by UN monitors who visited migrants held in State detention centres in Libya at the start of the month.

From 1 to 6 November, UN human rights monitors visited four Department of Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM) facilities in Tripoli, where they interviewed detainees who have fled conflict, persecution and extreme poverty from States across Africa and Asia, according to the High Commissioner’s Office (OHCHR).

A surge in refugee arrivals has led to soaring tensions on Greece’s outlying Aegean islands, with Lesbos’s mayor accusing the government in Athens of allowing it to become a giant prison camp.

Boycotting celebrations on Wednesday marking the 105th anniversary of Lesbos’s liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule, local officials gave the leftist-led coalition in Athens an ultimatum: either it took immediate action to decongest the island or risked mass protests from an increasingly unruly population.

Der „Hotspot“ Moria – Ein europäischer Albtraum

Der Wind pfeift durch das provisorische Zeltlager des Flüchtlingscamps Moria. Menschen stehen in einer Schlange und warten darauf, sich unter einem alten Schlauch mit eiskaltem Wasser zu duschen. Sie leben in schlecht befestigten Zelten inmitten eines Olivenhains, denn das Auffanglager Moria ist hoffnungslos überfüllt. Rund herum befinden sich Abfälle und Fäkalien, Toiletten gibt es kaum. Neben den Zelten ragt ein hoher Zaun mit NATO-Stacheldraht empor, hinter dem Militär stationiert ist und weitere Geflüchtete untergebracht sind. Der Anblick erweckt den Eindruck, als handle es sich um ein Hochsicherheitsgefängnis. Spärliche Wohncontainer stehen dicht gedrängt hinter mehrreihigen Stacheldrahtzäunen. Doch das Lager beherbergt keine Kriminellen sondern Menschen, deren einziges „Vergehen“ der Wunsch nach einem sicheren und besseren Leben ist. Es ist kein Lager, weit weg in Afrika oder Asien, sondern ein europäisches „Hotspot-Camp“ auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos: Ein Ort, an dem tausende Menschen seit anderthalb Jahren in einer völlig unzureichenden Versorgungslage ausharren müssen.

Ein Hochsicherheitstrakt – so sieht das Flüchtlingslager „Moria“ auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos aus. Drinnen gibt es unbeheizte Zelte und verschmutzte Toiletten. Doch wer hier nicht rein kommt, hat noch nicht einmal das.

Hohe Mauern, tonnenweise schwerer Stacheldraht, ein Wachturm mit viel Polizei und Security – „Moria“ sieht im Oktober 2017 noch genauso aus wie im April 2016, als der Papst es besucht und anschließend mit einem Konzentrationslager verglichen hatte.

Es sind wieder deutlich mehr neue Migranten angekommen: Etwa 5000 Neuankömmlinge registrierte das UNHCR allein im September – im Oktober waren es bisher knapp 4000 neue Flüchtlinge, die mit Booten von der Türkei über die kurze Ägäis-Route kamen. Die meisten davon nach Lesbos.

Sabratha – In the aftermath of weeks of conflict in the Libyan coastal city of Sabratah, IOM, the UN Migration Agency is providing support to more than 14,000 migrants, previously held in numerous informal detention centres and camps and now transferred to Zuwara and an assembly point in Sabratha.

Since the outbreak of the crisis in recent weeks, 6,700 migrants have received core relief packages, which include mattresses, blankets, pillows and hygiene kits at six separate locations and more than 100,000 meals (including water and juice) have been provided in Zuwara and Sabratha. IOM has also responded to the vast health needs and conducted 1,631 medical interventions and treated 23 injury cases. In addition, 21 women have received pregnancy care including deliveries, while 476 migrants (250 men, 161 women and 65 children) have received psychosocial support.

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at today’s press briefing at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

For over a week, UNHCR teams have been working around the clock to meet the urgent needs of over 14,500 migrants and refugees who were being held captive by smugglers in different locations, including farms, houses and warehouses in and around the coastal city of Sabratha in Libya. The refugees and migrants were taken to a hangar in the Dahman area in Sabratha that has been serving as an assembly point since the onset of the crisis. From there, refugees and migrants are being transferred by authorities to official detention centres where humanitarian agencies are providing lifesaving assistance.

Libyan authorities estimate that an additional 6,000 migrants and refugees are still being held by smugglers. If confirmed, this would bring the total number of refugees and migrants held in Sabratha to 20,500, including those in official detention centres.

With Turkey being one of the items on the agenda of the EU summit starting on Thursday (19 October), AFP is reporting that migrants are still coming to Greek islands despite the EU-Turkey deal to stem the arrival of refugees from Turkish territory.

Dozens of tents stud a hillside surrounded by olive trees, while children in flimsy sandals – the lucky ones wearing socks – play on mounds of stinking garbage as the sun rises on the Greek island of Samos.

Almost two years since more than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe, thousands are still living in squalor after risking their lives crossing the Aegean Sea.

“We arrived last night, 42 of us on a small boat,” said Naween Rahimi, an Afghan from Kabul, who is travelling with his wife.

“Some Chinese sold me a tent for 10 euros,” he said, adding that he had worked as an interpreter for the American military.
