I am standing here before you today because the European Commission is determined to take action. We all heard on what happened over Christmas and New Year. The lives of around 1,200 migrants, mostly Syrians, were saved when the Italian Coast Guard and Frontex, in the framework of Joint Operation Triton, rescued two cargo vessels: the Ezadeen and the Blue Sky M. These are just two examples of the more than 12 cargo ships that arrived in Europe since September. Of course, many more people have risked their lives coming in numerous small boats or difficult journeys via land borders.

170.000 Flüchtlinge im Jahr 2014 in Italien gelandet

ROM. In Italien sind im Vorjahr 170.081 Migranten eingetroffen. Das sind drei Mal so viele wie im Zeitraum 2012 bis 2013, als 56.192 Flüchtlinge die süditalienische Küste erreicht hatten.

Die Stiftung Migrantes berichtete am Dienstag bei einer Pressekonferenz in Rom, dass die meisten Flüchtlinge – 120.239 Personen – Sizilien erreichten, 22.673 kamen nach Kalabrien, 17.546 Apulien und 9.351 Kampanien.

IOM Provides Voluntary Return Home to Stranded Migrants in Libya

Libya – Three years after the fall of the former regime, the Libyan people find themselves no closer to realizing their aspirations for a better future. Security conditions continue to deteriorate and life remains hard, particularly for migrants.

According to IOM Libya Chief of Mission Othman Belbeisi, an estimated 150,000 migrant workers remain stranded in the country, but some progress is being made in helping the most vulnerable to return home voluntarily.

Syrian refugees told to decide as camp shuts down

THE Syrian refugees who were rescued off the coast of Cyprus in September and are temporarily housed at the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre, need to urgently make arrangements for their stay in the country, since the camp will close down in a few days, the Interior ministry announced yesterday.

Of the 337 people who were on the boat en route to Italy and were transferred after their rescue to Kokkinotrimithia, the majority still remain in the reception centre.

393 Syrian migrants (including 70 children) were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea, on Friday (5 December) by the Dutch vessel “Erasmusgracht”, with the Burger Bereederungs Contor (BBC) container vessel MV „Alemania“ providing close support. It has been erroneously reported that the BBC vessel did not provide assistance.

I profughi non ne parlano male. Non per paura, né per un contagio di massa da sindrome di Stoccolma. «Senza di loro – ripetono – saremmo rimasti intrappolati sotto le bombe».
