„Wir sind am Mittwoch 1 aus Sabratha aufgebrochen, auf zwei Kuttern und einem Schlauchboot“, berichten Überlebende der NGO Save The Children im italienischen Pozzallo. Am Donnerstag 2 hat das Schiff der Überlebenden das Seil gekappt, mit dem einer der Kutter mit Motorschaden gezogen wurde und das schliesslich sank; ihre ca. 500 Passagiere ertranken.

Warships can do little to stop Libyan people smugglers

By the time wrongdoing is established it may be too dangerous to intervene – and what would happen to the passengers?

It is groundhog day in Downing Street. David Cameron has called yet again for European navies to be sent into Libyan waters to take on people smugglers – a call he has made relentlessly over the past 13 months. This time, a British navy warship is poised to be sent to try to intercept vessels smuggling migrants and arms.

The plan isn’t quite as quixotic as usual. Unlike in previous months, Cameron and the EU may finally have a pliant partner in Libya: a UN-installed government that has little control over Libyan territory but nevertheless seems more willing to let foreign navies into its waters.

Ancora un naufragio, e siamo a tre in tre giorni. Corpi imprigionati nelle stive delle imbarcazioni che si capovolgono o che affondano. Corpi che galleggiano in mare. I sopravvissuti parlano di centinaia di dispersi, di centinaia di migranti affogati. Decine le testimonianze raccolte dai funzionari della Polizia di frontiera: «Ero partito con mio padre. Non lo trovo più». «Io con mia moglie», «Dov’é mio figlio?».

Terribile il Mediterraneo, trasformato in un cimitero della speranza e di un possibile futuro per intere generazioni di migranti. Nonostante lo straordinario impegno dei nostri uomini di mare, solo poche salme sono state recuperate.

Scores missing in new shipwreck off Libya

Rome – Dozens of migrants were missing on Friday after an overloaded fishing boat sank off the coast of Libya, the third major tragedy in the Mediterranean in as many days, Italian rescuers said. Italian coastguards sent in rescue ships after a call for help that spoke of 350 people in the water, while the Italian navy said it had saved 130 people and was searching for others.

Italy says migrant ship overturned off Libya

ROME (AP) — A migrant boat sank off Libya’s coast Thursday, with some 20 bodies spotted in the sea. Officials said 88 people had been rescued.

The Libyan coast guard also reported finding four bodies as well as also two empty boats, suggesting there could be many more victims as smugglers working amid Libya’s lawlessness take advantage of calm seas and warm weather to pack people into unseaworthy boats for the trip to Europe. The EU and Death at Sea: The calculated and monitored dying in the Central Mediterranean

Yesterday, on Thursday the 26th of May, it took more than four hours for rescue vessels to arrive. Four hours of worrying and of attempts to support the anxious people on board of an overcrowded wooden boat. In a SOS call at 6.21am, our WatchTheMed Alarm Phone shift team passed on the GPS coordinates to the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Rome. Shortly before, an emergency call had reached us via a satellite phone. The caller informed us about two boats carrying 500 people each, among them many Syrian and Iraqi refugees. At 10.31am, rescue finally approached but an hour earlier, the second boat had already capsized, within eyeshot. So far it is unclear how many people drowned or disappeared. MRCC Rome reported in their daily statement about one capsized boat and 96 survivors. Fatalities were not mentioned.

Der Pressesprecher der libyschen Küstenwache, Ayub Kacem, hat angegeben, dass die libysche Küstenwache am vergangenen Montag acht Boote mit 1.000 Flüchtlingen „auf italienischen Hinweis“ aufgebracht und die Boat-people nach Libyen zurückgebracht hat.

L’immigration clandestine par la Méditerranée reprend de plus belle avec le retour du beau temps. La Libye constitue le principal pôle de départ après les accords passés avec la Turquie.

Les gardes-côtes italiens ont secouru 5600 immigrés clandestins entre les journées de dimanche et mardi dans détroit de Sicile en Méditerranée. Durant la seule journée de mardi, 23 interventions ont été enregistrées près des côtes libyennes : un record en la matière. Il a fallu que les secours parviennent de toute la flotte dans la région pour accomplir cette opération complexe.

Mediterraneo, cento dispersi nel naufragio di ieri. Altri migranti salvati oggi dai nostri marinai. A riferirlo sono i superstiti delle due tragedie. Un barcone si rovescia a 35 miglia dalla costa libica. morti almeno 20 migranti. Hanno raggiunto oggi porto empedocle i 600 salvati ieri. In pochi giorni sono stati soccorsi nello spazio di mare tra Sicilia e Libia quasi diecimila persone, 4000 nelle ultime 24 ore. Una tragica contabilità quella che con molte difficoltà si cerca di fare sulle tragedie che ogni giorno si susseguono nelle acque del Mediterraneo. A cominciare dal naufragio odierno, sempre al largo delle coste della Libia, quando un barcone si è ribaltato in mare. Salvati 88 ma si temono che i dispersi possano essere molte decine. Ma potrebbe essere molto più grave il bilancio della tragedia di ieri, in cui ufficialmente si è parlato di cinque morti. „I sopravvissuti con cui abbiamo parlato a Porto Empedocle (dove sono sbarcati dalla nave „Bettica“ della Marina che li ha soccorsi, ndr) riferiscono che nel naufragio ci sono circa 100 dispersi che erano nello scafo“. Lo afferma Flavio di Giacomo, portavoce dell’Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni. Anche in questo caso il naufragio è avvenuto al largo delle coste della Libia. Tra loro due migranti che avrebbero perso in mare il figlio di sei anni.

BERLIN/ROM taz | Vor der libyschen Mittelmeerküste haben sich offenbar erneut mehrere Flüchtlingstragödien von noch unbekanntem Ausmaß ereignet. Die deutsche Organisation Seawatch, die mit einem eigenen Boot zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger unterwegs ist, sprach gestern von „Tausenden Toten“ und erklärte auf Facebook: „Am heutigen Tage findet womöglich die schlimmste Tragödie im Mittelmeer statt, die je erlebt wurde.“
