GENEVA, Switzerland – UN refugee agency chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday, July 24, urged European governments to step up efforts to rescue and host migrants who cross the Mediterranean, as this year’s death toll reached 800.
„The death of 260 people in less than ten days, in the most horrifying of circumstances, is evidence that the Mediterranean crisis is intensifying,“ Guterres said in a statement.

Evidently there is no point in keeping up the pretence that one can “deal with” the Libyan government as with any other country.
As the situation across the southern and eastern Mediterranean continues to deteriorate – chaos and violence in Libya, unrest in Egypt, the Israeli invasion of Gaza, and the ongoing civil war in Syria – one must confront the fact that Malta’s immediate geo-political environment is now officially a war zone on all but one front.
Valletta (AFP) Die Zahl der Toten bei der jüngsten Flüchtlingskatastrophe im Mittelmeer ist auf 30 gestiegen. Einsatzkräfte entdeckten insgesamt 29 Leichen im Frachtraum des hölzernen Schiffs, wie die Behörden in Malta am Sonntag mitteilten. Nach Angaben der italienischen Rettungskräfte kam zudem ein Baby ums Leben. Zunächst waren die Behörden Italiens und Maltas von insgesamt 19 Toten ausgegangen. Vermutlich hatten die Opfer giftige Abgasen aus dem Motor eingeatmet.

Lampedusa tragedy: ‚My wife and daughter did not die for nothing‘

Dr Ayman Mostafa is one of 212 survivors out of some 450 Syrian and Palestinian refugees who perished on 11 October 2013. His wife and three-year-old daughter were among the victims. In an interview with Neil Camilleri, he confirms that help from Italy and Malta only arrived six-and-a-half hours after the first call for help – by which time the victims had spent 90 minutes in the water.
He finds it in himself, however, to forgive those who “made a mistake” and believes his family and many others laid down their lives so that others could be saved in the future.
