Italy: See Navy rescue 700 migrants in Italian waters

Approximately 700 undocumented migrants were picked up by coastguard units in Italian waters, Monday. Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) coordinated with Italy’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to complete the operation.

One migrant boat was spotted early Monday morning, with all 83 women and children later being transferred via ribs to the MOAS-operated Phoenix vessel where they were given first aid. MOAS became involved in another rescue operation with a wooden boat carrying approximately 400 migrants, later Monday. The migrants were all later transferred to Italian Navy vessels.

The migrants were mostly Syrians, Palestinians and Eritreans, MOAS wrote in a press release.
