UNHCR unveils far-reaching proposals for European action in the Mediterranean Sea

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has sent a number of concrete proposals to the European Union to deal with the challenges posed by the thousands of refugees and migrants who risk their lives trying to reach Europe every year.

The proposals, made by UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres in a letter to the European Union, are part of UNHCR’s Central Mediterranean Sea Initiative (CMSI), which aims to encourage wide-ranging discussions with the European Commission and among European states and other concerned stakeholders to address the challenges of mixed migration in the Mediterranean Sea and to save lives.

Prime Minister ’somewhat angry‘ at migration statements, decisions soon on hospital space

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this evening he was somewhat angry at institutions such as Frontex which said that hundreds of thousands of people would be crossing the Mediterranean.

“I was expecting Frontex to instead say what it would be doing… Yes there is a problem of migration towards Europe. However, last year and so far this year, we had the least number of arrivals… We should not alarm people,” he said.

Fischkutter „Sea Watch“ soll Flüchtlingen helfen

fischkutterMit einem ehemaligen Fischkutter will eine Initiative aus Brandenburg Bootsflüchtlingen auf dem Mittelmeer helfen. Der hochseetüchtige Kutter „GO 46“ wird derzeit im Harburger Binnenhafen umgebaut und mit moderner Satellitentechnik ausgerüstet.

Ende März soll das 20 Meter lange Schiff unter dem Namen „Sea Watch“ von Hamburg aus Richtung Mittelmeer starten. Die Aktivisten haben den alten Kutter in den Niederlanden gekauft. Unterstützung bekamen sie dabei unter anderem auch von ehemaligen „Cap Anamur“-Helfern. Die „Cap Anamur“ war in den 80er-Jahren im chinesischen Meer im Einsatz, um Boat People zu retten, und nach der Jahrtausendwende auch im Mittelmeer.

Im Rahmen des „Prozesses von Khartoum“ hat die EU wissenschaftliche Institute damit beauftragt, die Abschreckungswirkung des EU-Grenzregimes auf die Motivation von Boat-people vor allem im Mittelmeer zu untersuchen. Erste Studienergebnisse zeigen, dass die „Aspirationen“ auch nicht durch massenhaften Tod an den EU-Grenzen zu brechen sind. Ab Frühjahr 2015 – mit der Besserung des Wetters im zentralen Mittelmeer und der dann steigenden Zahl von Boat-people – ergebe sich daher für die EU ein Dilemma, das nicht mehr mit den hergebrachten Mitteln gelöst werden könne.

Muscat to meet Merkel in Berlin today

The Libyan crisis, irregular immigration and Greece will be on the agenda of talks between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on today.

Dr Muscat is in Berlin for a one-day visit, accompanied by Foreign Minister George Vella and Labour MP Silvio Schembri.

Bilateral relations between the EU’s smallest and largest countries will also be on the agenda as will the Ukrainian crisis.

80 migrants rescued, 20 feared dead

A dinghy carrying some 80 migrants has been intercepted by AFM patrol boats some miles off Malta. The dinghy was found in distress early this morning. The migrants appeared to have been at sea for some days. They said there had originally been 100 people on the boat, but 20 perished. The rescue is the first in several months and comes at a time when the number of migrants in detention has slipped to a low of just 29. At one time there were over 2,000.

Just over a year ago, in October 2013, two boats carrying refugees and migrants from North Africa to Europe capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing over 500 passengers. The tragedy prompted the Italian navy to launch a search and rescue operation called Mare Nostrum (Our Sea), which has helped rescue more than 150,000 migrants attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing in the past year.
