„Italy closes Libyan embassy, urges U.N. mission amid migrant surge

(Reuters) – Italy closed its embassy in Libya on Sunday and stepped up its call for a U.N. mission to calm the worsening conflict there as thousands of migrants approached Italy by boat from North Africa.

[…] Embassy staff have been sent back to Italy, the ministry said.

Violence appears to be intensifying in Libya, where Islamic State is also active. The militant group released on Sunday a video that purported to show the beheadings of Egyptian Christians it had kidnapped in Libya.

Italienische Zeitungen stellen ein Video von Dschihadisten Online, die die Hinrichtung von 21 Ägyptern am Strand bei Tripolis – der libyschen Hauptstadt – zeigen. Das Gewaltvideo zeigt vor der Hinrichtung eine Drohungsansprache nach Italien und Europa. Nicht weit entfernt davon dürften die 12 Flüchtlingsboote gestartet sein, die heute von den italienischen Rettungsschiffen an Bord genommen wurden.

Seit Tagen ruft die italienische Regierung zur militärischen Intervention in Libyen auf. Rechte Politiker in Italien und Malta fordern, die Boat-people wieder zurückzuschicken oder militärisch als Piraten zu bekämpfen.

Es ist damit zu rechnen, dass in den kommenden Tagen viele Flüchtlinge und auch LibyerInnen aus dem Land zu fliehen versuchen werden. – Milizen – islamistische und nicht-islamistische – haben in den vergangenen Tagen Geländegewinne zu verzeichnen, die Ölexporte brechen ein.

Die italienische Küstenwache und mehrere Handelsschiffe sind am Sonntag vor der italienischen Mittelmeerinsel Lampedusa insgesamt zwölf Flüchtlingsbooten zu Hilfe gekommen. Angaben der Küstenwache und Medienberichten zufolge befanden sich insgesamt bis zu 2000 Migranten auf den Booten. Hunderte Flüchtlinge von acht Booten wurden seit dem Morgen bereits in Sicherheit gebracht, ein Einsatz für weitere vier Boote war am Abend noch im Gange.

More than 300 people on four rubber vessels die in the Central Mediterranean Sea

14.02.2015 / 13:07 / Approximately 40 NM off Tripoli and 120 NM off Lampedusa

Four inflatable rubber vessels that together carried over 400 people left a beach close to Tripoli/Libya in order to reach Italy in the night from Saturday 7th to Sunday 8th of February 2015. During their journey the migrants were without food and water and encountered situa-tions of distress due to the very difficult weather conditions. In total, and as far as known, there were merely 86 survivors and more than 324 fatalities.According to first testimonies of survivors, armed smugglers had forced them to embark by threatening to shoot anyone who would refuse to get onto the vessels (source 1). Following the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, survivors reported that water had been leaking into the rubber boats almost immediately after their departure (source 2).

Libyan oil pipeline sabotaged, gunmen storm Sirte offices

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libya’s National Oil Corporation urgently called on Saturday for more official protection for its installations after an oil pipeline from its El Sarir field was sabotaged, halting flow to Hariga port.

In a separate incident, gunmen stormed government buildings in the coastal city of Sirte, forcing officials out at gunpoint and taking over administrative offices and television and radio stations, the state news agency said.
