Des Syriens et des Palestiniens de Syrie sont enfermés au poste de police de Karmouz, à Alexandrie, depuis plus de 100 jours. Ces personnes avaient embarquées vers l’Europe depuis la Turquie mais ont en fait été redirigés de force par les facilitateurs de leur voyage au large d’alexandrie (Nelson Island). Ils ont été interceptés par les gardes-côtes egyptiens qui leur ont porté assistance. Sans droit au séjour en Egypte, la Turquie refuse leur réadmission et ils n’ont aucun accès à l’Europe.

Plusieurs de ces personnes ont entamé une grève de la faim.

Syrian and Syrian-Palestinian refugees detained in Alexandria’s Karmouz police station announce a hunger strike. They have been detained for more than 100 days. Many of them left Turkey by boat, hoping to reach Europe; the crew of their boat instead forced them to disembark on Nelson Island, off the coast of Alexandria, where they were rescued by the Egyptian coast guard. They do not have permission to return to Turkey, to live in Egypt, or to go onward to Europe.

في حالات الاحتجاز على خلفية الهجرة غير الشرعية المماثلة عادةً ما تصدر النيابة العامة المصرية قرار „بإخلاء سبيل اللاجئين المهاجرين، ولجهة اﻹدارة حق التصرف ..“
و جهة اﻹدارة – و هي وزارة الداخلية متمثلة في إدارة الأمن الوطني – غالبًا ما تقرر احتجازهم إداريًا إلى أن يتم اخلاء سبيلهم أو ترحيلهم طوعيًا إلى بلد أخرى ،، و غالبًا ما يختار اللاجئون واحدة من تلك البلدان ( تركيا – ماليزيا – السودان – الجزائر) للسفر إليها ..
