Migrations – ‚EUROMED Migration III‘ Conference

The Farnesina is hosting a conference today of the Directors General of EUROMED within the context of the project “EUROMED Migration III”. Introductions were made by Under-Secretary Benedetto Della Vedova and Secretary General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies Paolo Pennesi. Participants in the meeting include the European Commission and the Directors General for migration issues of the EU Member States and of the EU Neighbourhood (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia). Observers include Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.

Strengthening Euro-Mediterranean cooperation on migration

The “EUROMED Migration III” project, financed by the Commission with a budget of EUR 5 million, was created within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership following the 1995 Barcelona Declaration. It is part of a broader Justice and Home Affairs cooperation programme with the Mediterranean region, and goes along with “EUROMED Justice III” and “EUROMED Police III”. The project’s objective is to strengthen Euro-Mediterranean cooperation on migration issues and to promote legal migration through funding for professional training, labour matching in respective job markets and the creation of networks and exchanges between administrations, labour agencies, employer organisations, unions and institutes of higher learning.

Link between migration and development

The Rome conference is especially focused on migration for the purposes of employment and on the link between migration and development, with particular regard for the role of the diaspora and their contribution to the economic growth of countries of origin.
