Libya: migrants held in terrible conditions, ICRC reports

Overcrowded centers with no sanitation, scabies in Al-Hambra

(ANSAmed) – Libya is holding thousands of migrants in deplorable conditions without adequate sanitation, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported Tuesday. The temporary closure of many holding centers in the southern part of the country have led to severe overcrowding in western Libya’s Al-Hamra detention center, which has become a hub for migrants arriving from Mali, Niger, Eritrea and Somalia.

Scabies have broken out there due to poor hygienic conditions and overcrowding, the ICRC reported.

The UN High Commission for Refugees expressed concern over conditions at Al-Hamra after an August visit in which it found more than 1,000 detainees, including minors. Al-Hamra is controlled by a local militia that does not answer to government immigration authorities.

The ICRC, which has distributed food and hygiene kits to refugee and migrant centers throughout the country, will start a hygiene campaign at Al-Hamra in the next two weeks. (ANSAmed).
