Melilla – About 300 undocumented Africans on Wednesday stormed the three-metres-high fence surrounding Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla in an attempt to enter Spanish territory, officials said.

The migrants hurled stones at Moroccan and Spanish police trying to hold them back. About 100 of them managed to enter Melilla.

The Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, located on Morocco’s northern coast, are among the favourite gateways of undocumented migrants into Europe.

In 2005, Spain reinforced the fence with more barbed wire, video cameras and sensors.

In 2006, three people were killed during a co-ordinated attempt by dozens of people to climb the border fence. Two of them were reportedly shot and fatally injured by Moroccan police, while one fell down from the wall.

Attempts to cross into Melilla and Ceuta usually increase in the warm summer months.

Spain’s recession and record unemployment levels have not deterred African migrants.
