MaltaToday has taken an editorial stand to stop using the word migrant; a term which dehumanises the people risking their lives on a daily basis

A photo that recently went viral on the Internet speaks volumes about the growing disconnection between the ongoing human tragedy occurring in the Mediterranean, and how it is being reported in the media.

It was taken on the Greek island of Kos, and shows a weeping Syrian man cradling his two children on one of the many boats ferrying thousands of would-be refugees into Europe. In one respect, the message is one of hope: the man’s tears are of relief at having survived the perilous crossing, and being reunited with his wife. But what emerges is also the humanity of the people caught up in this ordeal: the fear that was left behind in war-torn countries, and the uncertainty they now face.

Smoothing the way for refugees to come to Europe would require huge political courage. But it’s the only way to avoid a repeat of this summer’s tragic scenes

In theory, the EU has a common asylum policy. In practice, there is almost no cooperation. Faced with this summer’s “migrant crisis”, Hungary is racing to complete a fence to keep Syrians and other refugees out, while Germany has signalled that it will allow any Syrians who get to Germany to remain, in the process tearing up a long-established convention which says that refugees must claim asylum in the first EU country they reach.

Closer to home, Britain and France have signed a deal over Calais, but Britain is refusing to even consider any “burden sharing” of refugees with France. And while northern EU states are now working with Mediterranean countries on search-and-rescue at sea, they still won’t help to settle the migrants saved.

The European Commission is urging EU governments to send back migrants who cannot claim asylum, taking a tougher line to convince reluctant countries to receive new refugees fleeing Syria and Eritrea.

Before an EU meeting in Luxembourg, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European commissioner in charge of migration, wrote to EU ministers to call for the EU’s so-called return policy to be stepped up, in a letter seen by Reuters.

Only 39 percent of migrants who were not granted asylum in the EU were returned to their home countries in 2014.

Murat Bay from Sendika.Org had an interview about immigration problem with Sandro Mezzadra, in University of Bologna, in Italy. Sandro Mezzadra works as an Associate Professor of Political Theory at the University of Bologna, where he teaches postcolonial studies and contemporary political theory. He has published widely on the areas of migration, postcolonial theory, contemporary capitalism, Italian operaismo and autonomist Marxism. He recently completed a book with Brett Neilson, Border as method, or, the multiplication of labor (2013, Duke University Press). His writings have been translated into ten languages: Italian, French, German, Spanish, Finnish, Greek, Slovenian, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese. He is currently working on the FP7 European project MIG@NET (Transnational Digital Networks, Migration and GenderOpens in a new window) and is a partner researcher on the ARC Discovery project, Culture in Transition: Creative Labour and Social Mobilities in the Asian Century Opens in a new window.

C’è la tentazione di banalizzarla, questa vicenda, collocandola in qualche serie da saggezza popolare tipo ‘Chi la fa l’aspetti’, o peggio ancora ‘Mal comune mezzo gaudio’. E, invece, la vicenda di Calais, che non è uguale a quella di Ventimiglia, anche se si legge che è la stessa, ed è diversa da quella della barriera tra Ungheria e Serbia, ma per molti versi le assomiglia, sta nella serie dei drammi delle migrazioni e dell’incapacità dell’Europa di affrontarli a livello nazionale – impossibile – e a livello di Unione – difficile, in ogni caso.

„Migrants en Méditerranée : la Tunisie contre toute intervention militaire“

Alors que l’Europe veut mettre sur pied une mission militaire et navale destinée à lutter contre le trafic de migrants qui traversent la Méditerranée, le Premier ministre tunisien Habib Essid déclare qu’il est „contre toute intervention militaire pour régler ce problème“.

La Commission européenne a proposé mercredi de répartir entre les pays de l’Union les demandeurs d’asile qui traversent la Méditerranée et échouent sur les rives italiennes et grecques. L’Union tente également de collaborer avec les pays du sud de la Méditerranée pour juguler les arrivées. Le Premier ministre tunisien était à Bruxelles ce jeudi pour préparer un accord de libre-échange avec l’Europe. Mais cette question des migrants a également été au centre des discussions entre Habib Essid et les dirigeants européens.

Afrikanische Flüchtlinge

In der Diskussion über afrikanische Flüchtlingsströme wird kaum über die Migration innerhalb Afrikas geredet. Dabei ist sie der Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Ansturms auf Europa.

In der Debatte um den Umgang mit afrikanischen Flüchtlingen, die von Schleusern über das Mittelmeer nach Europa transportiert werden, geht mancher Aspekt unter, der in der Migrationsforschung schon länger diskutiert wird. Zur Erklärung des Einwandererstroms aus Afrika wird meist nur auf wirtschaftliche Not, demographischen Druck und politische Verfolgung verwiesen. Selten wird die innerafrikanische Migrationspolitik als Ursache genannt. Doch genau darin sehen Forscher des angesehenen Oxforder International Migration Institute (IMI) eine Teilerklärung für die verstärkte Orientierung afrikanischer Flüchtlinge nach Europa. Sie kritisieren das Wahrnehmungsdefizit ihrer Kollegen, das sie auf deren „eurozentrische Sicht“ zurückführen (Marie-Laurence Flahaux, Hein de Haas: „African Migration. Einzel- und Dauerspenden gesucht!

Anfang Februar hat das transnationale Netzwerk Afrique-Europe-Interact in Rabat (Marokko) ein Rasthaus für Migrantinnen eröffnet, die gerade in Marokko angekommen sind (was meist bedeutet dass sie erst vor kurzem die anstrengende Reise durch die Wüste hinter sich gebracht haben).

Das Projekt ist von einigen Spenderinnen angestoßen worden, die unserem Netzwerk mit der ausdrücklichen Bitte Geld überwiesen haben, Migrantinnen in Marokko zu unterstützen. Aufhänger war dabei das Buch von Emmanuel Mbolela, der in seinem von Afrique-Europe-Interact herausgegebenen Buch „Mein Weg vom Kongo nach Europa. Zwischen Widerstand, Flucht und Asyl“ unter anderem die schwierige, häufig von massiver sexualisierter Gewalt begleitete Situation von Frauen auf den Flucht- und Migrationsrouten beschreibt.

Thousands attended the World Social Forum in Tunis last month. But, says Giedre Steikunaite, we mustn’t forget the absent, the missing, the disappeared.

A mother holding a framed picture of her child walks the streets in protest. She knocks on institutional doors; she seeks. She is Honduran, Guatemalan, Tunisian, Algerian, Aboriginal, she is Saharawi. Her tragedy is personal, yet shared the world over by thousands of mothers and fathers whose loved ones have been made to vanish. They disappeared in narco villas in Mexico, in interrogation and detention centres in North Africa and southern Europe, at the bottom of the Mediterranean in unmarked graves. They disappeared in the system.

It was those who were absent who were the most relentlessly ‘present’ at the 2015 World Social Forum in Tunis. The event gathered hundreds of activists and organizations; but thousands more could not attend, for their whereabouts are not known.
