„Refugees welcome to Piraeus“ – painted on a sheet of metal, the makeshift sign stands in the middle of Greece’s latest improvised migrant camp, set up right in the country’s main harbor.
Stretched to the limit by the influx of around a million people since last year, Greece is doing its best to respond to its role as the gateway to Europes greatest migration challenge in 60 years.
With Balkan borders progressively slamming shut, Piraeus has become a pressure valve between the Greek islands and the bottleneck on the country’s frontier with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), where over 11,500 people are waiting to cross.
What group are you from? And what is your group doing?
I: We are a part ofthe situation for migrants in Bulgaria a small group called “Antifascist action – Sofia” which exists now for one year. It is not only focused on migrants, but the migration topic is related to nazism, racism and xenophobia. I was part of some other groups before that was focused on migrants but there were very few people there. In 2011, I was part of the No-Border team in Bulgaria. There weren’t many migrants at that time but we wanted to stress to society that migration is not a problem but something that will happen for sure in the next years.*
М: It is important to mention that in Bulgaria there is not a single group that is in solidarity with migrant struggles in a political and radical way. There exists a network for refugee support called “Friends of Refugees” but this network is mostly for individual cases for humanitarian help. I think this is one of the greatest problems we face right now in Bulgaria: the lack of these kind of structures. As for our group, both of us are also members of social centre Adelante which was an autonomous social centre in Sofia and now is a collective in search for a new place.
I: We organized the demonstration against the fascist Lukov March and some smaller actions in reaction to the fact of that people were beaten at the border, and some of them died after that. We want to make cases like this more public but we are doing this together with other people who are sympathizing with the migrants. But the main thing is that we don’t have too many good contacts to migrants and because we don’t have a social centre now, it is also harder to connect with people.

Private Hilfsorganisationen haben Hunderte Boots-Flüchtlinge vor dem Ertrinken gerettet. Nun erschwert ihnen die griechische Küstenwache die Arbeit durch Bürokratie. Eine Reportage von der Insel Lesbos.
Sandra Hammamy hält Ausschau nach Flüchtlingen. Sie hat einen gelben Taucheranzug an, der sie vor Kälte schützt – im Wasser und an Bord des Bootes, auf dem sie und ihre Crew die Ägäis vor der Insel Lesbos durchkreuzen. Heute stürmt es. Der Wind peitscht Hammamy ins Gesicht und immer wieder schwappen kleine Wellen in das motorisierte Schlauchboot. Vier Grad Celsius ist das Wasser kalt. „An solchen Tagen hoffen wir, dass in der Türkei wirklich keiner ablegt“, sagt Hammamy. „Das würde nicht gut gehen.“
Ab diesem Donnerstag, den 25.Februar fahren 4 Aktivist*innen aus Osnabrück gemeinsam an die Grenzen in Serbien und Mazedonien, um dort unbürokratisch und direkt Menschen auf der Flucht zu unterstützen.

We have been cooking soup, distributing blankets, giving information, warmth, food and hope. It has been fun, it has been tragic. We’ve tried to bring a human face to the Balkan route. It has been intense, rewarding, invaluable. The support has been staggering, seeing the solidarity has been beautiful. But I am afraid we are on the wrong track. While we are providing aid and saving lives on the ground, politicians up high in the glass towers of Brussels have been hard at work getting over their differences in order to contain, regulate, close up and slow down the arrival of foreigners in Europe. They are doing it by means of savage bureaucracy, with the tidal waves of history propelling them forward, coming down on support movements as well as visitors to our continent, breaking up solidarity, isolating refugees from us and society. Migrants are step by step being put away in camps and prisons, contained like a disease, to protect Europe from exposure. This is the brutal face of bureaucracy and order, regulation and isolation, which tolerates no independent assistance, no independent information, no independent contact.

Druck der Europäischen Union auf Griechenland, schärfere Maßnahmen in Fluchtpolitik zu ergreifen, wird direkt umgesetzt
Heute Morgen, am 1. Februar 2016, hat die griechische Polizei mit teilweise schwer bewaffneten Sondereinheiten die Unterkunft von internationalen Refugee-Unterstützer_innen in der Nähe der griechisch-mazedonischen Grenze gestürmt. Das komplette Haus sowie alle umstehenden Busse wurden mit Hunden durchsucht; alle anwesenden Personen mussten sich Leibesvisitationen unterziehen. Der angebliche Grund für die Razzia sei die Suche nach Drogen. Gefunden wurde nichts außer ein paar Taschenmessern. „Es ist einfach absurd“, so eine der Unterstützer_innen „Wir kochen Suppe! Es scheint als ob die Kriminalisierung von Helfer_innen nun von den Inseln auch zu uns hinüber schwappt.“
Im Februar 2016 findet die selbstorganisierte INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS auf Kampnagel statt. Die Konferenz wird von Refugee- und Supporter-Gruppen, Geflüchteten, Migrant*innen & Aktivist*innen aus verschiedenen Netzwerken organisiert. Als Geflüchtete wollen wir unsere Netzwerke stärken und die aktuelle Situation in Deutschland und Europa analysieren und diskutieren. Zusammen werden wir an konkreten Ideen arbeiten, um unsere Lebensbedingungen positiv zu verändern. […]

“Offiziell fahren wir ja nur nach Skala Sikamineas, um einen Kaffee zu trinken. Und unterwegs gucken wir, ob jemand in Seenot ist,“ sagt Skipper Philipp Grözinger, der das Schnellboot der Hilfsorganisation Sea-Watch vor der Nordküste der griechischen Insel Lesbos steuert. Augenzwinkernd erklärt der deutsche Seemann mit dem schulterlangen blonden Haar, dass die freiwilligen Helfer ihre Einsätze zur Rettung von Flüchtlingen fortsetzen, trotz neuer Auflagen und Schikanen der Behörden. Diese beschneiden seit jüngstem den Aktionsradius von NGOs, die Flüchtlingen helfen, einigermaßen sicher an der Küste von Lesbos zu landen.
