Pusieron su experiencia profesional salvando vidas al servicio de que niños, mujeres y hombres no murieran ahogados en su desesperada huída de la guerra y la pobreza. Pero ahora se enfrentan a la cárcel. Manuel Blanco, Julio Latorre y Quique Rodríguez, los bomberos sevillanos que fueron detenidos  en enero de 2016 en la isla de Lesbos mientras realizaban tareas de rescate de refugiados para la asociación Proemaid (Professional Emergency Aid), ya tienen fecha de juicio en Grecia. El próximo 7 de mayo, y después de que las autoridades griegas equipararan sus labores humanitarias con el tráfico ilegal de personas en grado de tentativa, se celebrará una vista en la que se enfrentan a diez años de prisión. Desde que fueron liberados vienen insistiendo en que su esfuerzo voluntario, el suyo y el de otras personas, no puede ser criminalizado.

The campaign “You Can’t Evict Solidarity” is made up of different people living in Germany and Greece who are active in anti-racist and other political struggles. Many of them were active on the Balkanroute, in Greece or on the outer borders of the European Union in the past 2 ½ years. They started the campaign in the summer of 2016 to promote solidarity beyond borders with migrants’ squats and struggles in Greece, on the Balkanroute and everywhere.

Refugee support agencies are reporting a surge in homelessness in northern Greece.

The surge is being attributed to the big rise in refugees avoiding the Greek islands and using the land border from Turkey across the Evros river into Greece instead.

The main city in northern Greece, Thessaloniki, has apparently run out of room completely to house new arrivals.

Rooms were lying empty at the City Plaza hotel in Athens. Now it’s an autonomous hive where refugees are empowered

In May 2016, after the EU-Turkey agreement designed to close off mass immigration to Europe, a group of 120 migrants accompanied by volunteers stormed the well-known City Plaza hotel in Athens. The hotel was vacant, its owners having gone bankrupt. Hundreds of rooms were lying empty while refugees suffered in camps far from the city.

The refugees set up shop there, and – despite government threats to cut off the water and electricity – have remained ever since. The hotel is a cacophony of noise. The sounds of small children shrieking waft through the reception area. Staccato bursts of Arabic, Urdu, Persian and English fill the room. The walls are adorned with posters. A blue sign with “City Plaza” written downwards on either sign flanks a message: Solidarity, together, resistance, unity, giving, getting, life, equality. The words written underneath each other their first letters highlighted in pink spell out “struggle”.

Schon seit 20 Monaten sitzen Menschen auf der Insel Lesbos fest. Sie leben in Lagern hinter Stacheldraht, dicht gedrängt in Wohncontainern oder in notdürftig abgedeckten Campingzelten.

Sie harren aus, im strömenden Regen, bei Schnee und brütender Hitze. Seit dem EU-Türkei Deal dürfen viele Menschen, die auf der Suche nach Schutz und einem besseren Leben nach Europa kamen, die griechischen Inseln nicht mehr verlassen. Einige von ihnen sitzen in Gefängnissen und warten auf ihre Abschiebung, weil ihr Asylantrag entweder abgelehnt oder als „unzulässig“ für die Asylprüfung eingestuft wurden. Andere Asylsuchende werden von der griechischen Polizei pauschal aufgrund ihrer Nationalität inhaftiert.1

This past November, three bodies were found washed ashore the Greek island of Lesbos. They were later identified as a Turkish husband and wife, Huseyin and Nur Maden, and one of their three children. The Madens were teachers in Turkey, but they were among the 150,000 civil servants dismissed from their jobs after the failed coup in July 2016. Some of those dismissed tried to flee to Greece to avoid arrest or find work. More than 12,000 Turks applied for asylum in Europe for the first time in 2017, according to Eurostat. This figure is triple what it was the year preceding the failed coup and is the highest it has been in the past decade.

Since July 2016, Turkish authorities have arrested over 50,000 people, including journalists and intellectuals. Around 150,000 Turks have both had their passports revoked and lost their jobs as police officers, soldiers, teachers and public servants. For some, the solution was to leave Turkey and find work in another country, where they could have a better life and avoid prosecution.

The first thing you notice is the smell: the stench from open-pit latrines mingling with the odor of thousands of unwashed bodies and the acrid tang of olive trees being burned for warmth.

Then there are the sounds: Children hacking like old men. Angry shouts as people joust for food.

And, finally, the sights: Thin, shivering figures drinking water from washed-out motor oil jugs. A brown-haired girl of no more than 3 clutching a fuzzy toy rabbit and smiling as she repeats to all who will listen, “I love you. I love you.”

For years, the turquoise-ringed vacationer’s paradise known as Lesbos has been on the front lines of Europe’s struggle to contain its part of a global refugee crisis. But conditions at the Greek island’s vastly overcapacity, razor-wired main camp have rarely if ever been as bad as they are this winter.

An den Grenzen zu Ungarn, Kroatien und Slowenien werden Menschen beim Versuch, weiter in Richtung der zentraleuropäischen Mitgliedstaaten zu fliehen, brutal misshandelt. Menschenrechtsorganisationen und -aktivist*innen dokumentierten auch 2017 zahlreiche Fälle von Gewalt gegen Schutzsuchende.

Im Herbst 2015 war die Balkanroute in aller Munde. Medien waren vor Ort und berichteten quasi live von den Geschehnissen. Spätestens nach den Grenzaufrüstungen entlang der Fluchtroute sowie der Räumung des Zeltlagers in Idomeni schwand die Aufmerksamkeit jedoch. Immer noch sind aber tausende Menschen an verschiedensten Orten auf der Balkanroute gestrandet. Die meisten von ihnen sitzen unter oft erbärmlichen Bedingungen in Griechenland oder Serbien fest, viele probieren immer wieder, in andere Länder weiterzukommen.

The situation in Patra, where hundreds of migrants and refugees are awaiting the opportunity to sneak onto a ferry to Italy, is “barely manageable,” a coast guard officer in the western port city has told Kathimerini.

“Safeguarding the port’s security is a battle,” he said, voicing concerns that the number of potential stowaways squatting in abandoned buildings around the port is growing.
