Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday emphasized Greece’s decisive role in managing a refugee crisis, declaring that the country is “guarding the European Union’s borders.”

Tsipras’s comments, made to state television channel ERT3, came as pressure grows on Greece due to an influx of migrants arriving on Aegean islands from Turkey.

“Greece is making a multifaceted effort to tackle the refugee crisis,” Tsipras said, adding that the country is “honoring its European obligations to create centers for the reception and identification of refugees.”

Es war eine eher unscheinbare Maßnahme, doch sie löste eine Kettenreaktion aus: In der vergangenen Woche setzten slowenische Polizisten an der Grenze zu Kroatien 162 Marokkaner fest und verweigerten ihnen die Weiterreise nach Österreich. Begründung: Sie seien Wirtschaftsmigranten und hätten keine Chance auf Asyl in Europa, daher werde man sie wieder nach Kroatien abschieben.

Hundreds of migrants and refugees tried to force their way past in an attempt to enter Macedonia

Violent clashes broke out on the Greek-Macedonian border when hundreds of migrants tried to force their way past the Macedonian police and army into Macedonia.

Migrants, angry at being stuck in Idomeni for weeks, threw rocks and bottles at the Macedonian police, and pulled apart the razor wire marking the border between Greece and Macedonia.

Greece – IOM staff in Greece report a drastic decrease in the number of migrants and refugees crossing into Greece over the weekend. On Sunday, just 155 migrants arrived on the Greek islands by sea. Of these, 79 arrived in Kalymnos, 44 in Megisti and 24 in Lesvos. The remainder arrived in Chios and Kos.

The drop is significant given that, according to IOM estimates, some 100,000 migrants have crossed into Greece since the beginning of November – averaging around 4,500 crossings per day.

There have also been no migrant fatalities in Greek waters since November 17th, when the Hellenic Coast Guard recovered the remains of nine people – a man, four women and four children. Seven people were rescued and two young boys remain missing, presumed drowned. IOM reports that 585 people have perished on the Eastern Mediterranean migration route since the start of 2015.

A protest by migrants on Greece’s border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is putting railway operator Trainose at risk of losing major international clients.

Migrants have over the last few days been protesting FYROM’s decision not to let them cross from Greece. Many migrants have camped on the railway lines connecting the two countries, which means that no trains have come in or out of Greece for the last week.

Hunderte Migranten aus Afrika und Asien haben versucht, die griechisch-mazedonische Grenze zu durchbrechen. Sie warfen Steine auf Grenzpolizisten und rissen einen Stacheldrahtzaun teilweise ein.

Mit verzweifelter Gewalt gingen die rund 200 Migranten zu Werk. Am Grenzposten Idomeni durchbrachen sie die Stacheldrahtzäune und warfen Steine und Abfälle auf die mazedonische Polizei. Andere knieten nieder und riefen: „Wir wollen nach Deutschland“. Eine Handvoll von ihnen schaffte es auf die mazedonische Seite. Sie wurden aber von der Polizei wieder auf die griechische Seite zurückgedrängt. Polizisten in Kampfmontur und einige mit Sturmgewehren riegelten den auf etwa 40 Meter eingerissenen Grenzzaun ab.

Wer „echter Flüchtling“ – mit Anspruch auf Schutz nach der Genfer Flüchtlingskonvention – und wer „Wirtschaftsflüchtling“ ist, darüber wird nicht nur in Deutschland empört gestritten. Nun haben mehrere Staaten entlang der sogenannten Balkanroute begonnen, mutmaßliche Armutsflüchtlinge nicht mehr einreisen zu lassen. Wer unter diese Definition fällt und mithin zurückgewiesen wird in Slowenien, Kroatien, Serbien, Mazedonien oder Griechenland, das entscheiden bisweilen Polizeibeamte und Grenzschützer freihändig. Gestoppt werden unter anderem Flüchtlinge aus dem Maghreb, aus Bangladesch, Pakistan und Somalia.

GENEVA, Nov 24 (Reuters) – The United Nations on Tuesday condemned new restrictions on refugees that have left around 1,000 migrants stuck at the main border crossing into Macedonia from Greece, denied entry due to their nationalities in violation of international law.

„Profiling asylum seekers on the basis of their alleged nationality infringes the human right of all people to seek asylum, irrespective of their nationality and to have their individual cases heard,“ U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said in a statement issued by his press office.

He urged nations to „respond with compassion, solidarity and shared responsibility.“

GENEVA, Nov 24 (Reuters) – About 1,000 refugees and migrants are stuck at the main crossing point into Macedonia from Greece as authorities deny entry to some nationalities in contravention of international law, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

„A new humanitarian situation is developing in Europe that needs urgent attention,“ Adrian Edwards of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told a news briefing.
