“Trapped in Europe’s Quagmire: The situation of asylum seekers and refugees in Bulgaria” is Bordermonitoring’s latest report on Bulgaria. Migration In Greece

Eleven Myths And Even More Truths. Publication of the RLS Office in Greece.

Are there too many immigrants living in Greece so that there is no more room for others? Are they „illegal immigrants“? Is the law on citizenship an „illegal immigrants“ magnet? Are foreigners, although we treat them in the best possible way, time bombs that threaten public health? Do they take our jobs and threaten our lives and properties? Albanians have integrated; are Pakistanis a different story? Is racist violence limited to a few isolated incidents? Did our own fathers emigrate legally?

We have repeatedly heard this and much more in the form of statements and not questions. But as deeply as they might be embedded in the public opinion, the above stereotypes prove to be tenuous: a level-headed review shows that not only they are dangerous (as they are often associated with extreme right-wing schools of thought), but they also do not correspond with the truth.

For at least twenty years, the migration issue in Greece is an issue which has been permanently coming to the forefront in different guises, taking up a central spot in public discussions. Those discussions are mostly dominated by distorted notions, while true facts are obscured, as migration is an issue that is instrumentalised by politics and exploited by the media. The actions of the main representatives of mass media and systematic interventions by the extreme right have led to the creation of social myths and at times even of situations of “moral panic”, which makes it more and more difficult to comprehend the phenomenon’s complexity and of course address it in a sober manner.

The Eclipse of Europe: Economic Agreements between Italy and Libya and the Surveillance of Borders

Pubblicato da Fulvio Vassallo

Bilateral Agreements between Italy and Libya: Security without Human Rights

Not much has been said about the Ministerial Conference held in Rome on the 6th of March 2014, where foreign ministers, high level delegations from Libya and representatives from international organisations gathered to discuss the current situation of Libya. At the forefront of the Conference there were the economic ties between Libya and its partners, the necessity to defend them by disarming paramilitary groups, the patrolling of borders and the subsequent issue of illegal migration.

The effect of negative labelling – Why are we still talking about ‘migrants’?

By Dr Melissa Phillips

As the number of people arriving by boat to Europe continues to rise, so does the rhetoric about an influx of ‘illegal migrants’, ‘boat migrants’ , ‘migrant boats’ and just plain ‘illegals’. Academics have long written about the impact of press reporting on asylum issues and the effect of labelling on refugees and asylum seekers.(1) Their findings show the way predominantly negative labels are repeated and entrenched having a detrimental consequence for how we understand asylum issues and perceive asylum seekers. Perhaps the most pernicious of these labels has been ‘illegal’ which human rights groups, refugee advocates and media organisations have been campaigning against as inaccurate and legally incorrect.(2)

A big report on direct action campaigns against companies profiting from migrants detention and deportation has been realized. It includes a collection of direct actions and campaigns in different countries, reflections and figures from different sources showing the negative economic impact of being a target of such campaigns.

The report is targeted at companies customers, shareholders and employees. The aim is to spread the information in the business circle about companies victims of actions, to affect the reputation of them, to highlight the often minimized economic impacts of such campaigns, to open the internal discussion about the issue.

Targeted companies often try to keep this information hidden and to avoid any public (and internal) communication on it. They know that this can have emulation effect, and especially they know that the direct impact of these campaigns is often much smaller than the indirect one (like image damages, impaired credibility for customer, internal discussions, changes in the operative procedure).

The report is also meant to be spread in the business sector which are often involved in border system (construction, security, airlines..)

The report was already sent by mail to a large number of targeted companies‘ employees, shareholders and customers, and published to some investors forum.

Feel free to spread it much more, to print it, to send it to companies and stakeholders, to edit it and make new versions…
