Andreas Schwarzkopf

The American war in Afghanistan is the longest and one of the costliest military operations in United States history.

Yet, the Taliban are back in many parts of the country from which they had been purged, and militants associated with both the Taliban and the Islamic State frequently attack civilians.

Afghan forces still lack the manpower, equipment and training needed to take back large areas of territory from Taliban control, said Caitlin Forrest, an Afghanistan expert at the Institute for the Study of War.

The institute has been tracking who controls different parts of Afghanistan. Here is its latest analysis of the growing reach of the Taliban and the Islamic State:

Iraqi forces have launched a ground offensive to retake a key ISIL-held area in the northern part of the country, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said.

„You either surrender, or die“, Abadi said in a televised speech announcing the operation early on Sunday.

He was addressing Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) fighters, who have been in control of the city since 2014.

NZZ | 10.08.2017

The Great Game

Defend Europe’s ship, the C-Star, has been stopped in Port Suez after its captain could not present a satisfactory crew list, resulting in the ship being „arrested“ and forced to anchor.

Unconfirmed accounts indicate the ship may have been halted in dramatic circumstances, with the navy surrounding the vessel and taking over responsibility.

However, an employee at the Suez Canal Authority confirmed that the detaining of the ship had nothing with the Canal Authority but rather “it was arrested by the security authorities,” as it was “a matter of security due to the lack of documentation and papers.”

This is no doubt a huge blow for the Defend Europe project and will likely be draining the already stretched resources of the far-right project.

Oggi Minniti a Tripoli

GIORDANO STABILE

Usare l’aviazione contro «l’emigrazione illegale».

Coastguard rescues over 500 off Sabratha and Garabulli

Over 500 migrants whose boats were in difficulty were rescued this morning in two separate operations by the Libyan coastguard.

According to Commodore Ayoub Qasim, the Libyan naval spokesman, some 400 people aboard what he called a “rowing boat” were rescued off Sabratha, 80 kilometres east of Tripoli. Another 120 were rescued off Garabulli, 60 kilometres east of the capital.

At a press conference to announce the rescues, Qasim again defended the conduct of the coastguard in the dispute with German NGO Sea-Watch which has accused it of interfering in a rescue operation, endangering the lives of its own crew as well as of some 500 migrants it was trying to rescue.

Libyan Herald | 16.04.2017

Human traffickers must be brought to justice UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler has told the Presidency Council (PC).

Kobler said today that the PC had to establish its authority and end human trafficking which he believed might be a crime against humanity.

He was speaking after a weekend in which more than 5,000 migrants were picked up off the Libyan coast and at least seven are known to have drowned.

Kobler said he was thankful that thousands of migrants had just been been saved but was sad to hear of the deaths.
