Fourth day of hunger strike for 41 refugees in front of UNHCR Tunis since one week. They are staturoty refugees who refuse local integration in Tunisia offered by UNHCR. Today three people were taken to the hospital. Pictures and press release in English below.

We are refugees of Choucha camp now protesting in front of the headquarters of the UNHCR Office in Lac area suburb of Tunis, since 26.03.2013 we entered into an open hunger strike starting from 03/29/2013 for the following reasons:
1 – decision of UNHCR not to send our files to resettlement countries as durable solution and followed the decision to close the camp in 06/30/2013 without finding solutions to our problems and put local integration program and agreed with the Tunisian authorities and imposed on us local integration program in Tunisian society by force.
2- Discrimination and Racism against dark skinned people and bad treatment of inferiority which we had and still experienced as refugees and we were constantly discriminated treated like animal starting from hospitals, transportation and markets when we go to urban areas and vary routes discrimination such as swearing and contempt to end beatings, knowing that these things are part of the reasons that prompted us to escape of our countries and owing giving us recipe recognition of refugees and so we do not want to open the door of this suffering again
3- Two years of misery and suffering ongoing
4 – Two years of living in the desert and resist the difficult climatic conditions and the vagaries of nature harsh desert, the unknown fate and disregard for UNHCR and the Government to the Refugee Problems
5 – fear that the events of May 2011 will repeated, which was assault on the camp by the citizens and the murder of two refugees also in the last event wounded more than 7 which confirming discrimination
As well as what happened in 03.05.2013 when Tunisian national guards prevented us from going to the capital to connect ourselves with the UNHCR office to reject the local integration, prevent us in city of Aram near Gabes and the National Guard beat and insult us used racially insulted terms, turned us to the camp by force.
6 – there is no law preserves the rights of refugees in Tunisia and even if it will be found in the future, we do not accept to stay in Tunis and live as a second class people(WSIf)
7 – instability and insecurity experienced by the country
8 – When we refused merger they threatened us to cut off the few existing services in the camp to force us to go out of camp to accept integration program or they will leave us to die slow, but we chose death rather than to live without dignity, and now we open hunger strike
And now we are threatened with the danger of homelessness again, hunger and death and therefore appeal to humanitarian and human rights organizations to intervene to stop such suffering and that lasted for two years and give UNHCR and the Tunisian authorities for local integration program of compulsory and other solutions fair enables us to live in dignity as human beings
Our only demand is to have equal chance like other refugees live in shousha camp to send our files to resettlement country that will respect us as human been and with effective system of protection
Nous sommes dans une grève de faim ouverte
Nous sommes des réfugiés du camp de Choucha qui protestent en face du siège de l´HCR à Tunis, les Berges du Lac. Le 29 mars 2013 nous avons initié une grève de faim ouverte à cause des raisons suivantes : La décision du HCR de ne pas envoyer nos dossiers aux pays de réinstallation comme une solution durable et les décisions de fermer le camp le 30 juin 2013 sans avoir trouver une solution à nos problèmes et d´imposer un programme d´intégration locale avec les autorités tunisiennes. Un programme qui nous force de nous intégrer dans la société tunisienne.
La discrimination et le racisme contre les personnes à la peau noire et le traitement d´infériorité que nous avons vécu et que nous vivons encore. Nous étions régulièrement traité comme des animaux – dans les hôpitaux, le transport publique et dans les marchés etc.
Déjà deux années de misère et de souffrance.
Deux année de vivre dans le désert et résister contre les conditions climatiques difficiles et les forces de la nature dures du désert, le destin inconnu et l´ignorance face aux problèmes des réfugiés par le HCR et le gouvernement.
La peur que l´événement du mai 2011 puisse se répéter. C´ était une attaque au camp par des citoyens qui avait comme résultat l´assassinat de deux réfugiés et plus de 7 réfugiés blessés. Aussi ce qui s´est passé le 3 mars 2013 quand la garde nationale tunisienne nous a empêché d´aller à la capitale pour contacter le bureau du HCR afin de rejeter l´intégration locale. La garde nationale nous a arrêtés à Aram près de Gabes. Ils nous ont battu et insulté en utilisant des mots racistes et nous ont forcé de retourner au camp.
Il n´existe aucune loi en Tunisie qui garantit les droits des réfugiés et même s´il y aurait une à l´avenir, nous n´acceptons pas de rester ici comme des personnes de deuxième classe.
L´instabilité et l´insécurité que nous avons connu dans ce pays.
Quand nous avons protesté, ils nous ont menacés de réprimer les services limités dans le camp pour nous forcer de quitter le camp et accepter le programme d integration. Sinon ils vont nous laisser mourir lentement, mais nous optons pour la mort en lieu de vivre sans dignité. Maintenant nous sommes mises en danger de manque de logement, faim et mort. C´est la raison pour laquelle nous appelons aux organisations humanitaires et des droits de l´homme d´intervenir afin de terminer notre souffrance qui a durée plus que deux années et de trouver d´autres solutions qui nous permettent de vivre en dignité comme des êtres humains. Notre seule revendication est d´avoir les mêmes chances comme d´autres réfugiés dans le camp de Choucha et que nos dossiers sont envoyé aux pays de réinstallation avec un système effectif de protections et qui nous accueillons comme des êtres humains.
