We stand in solidarity with the five rescuers who face a court case on Lesvos, Greece, tomorrow. They have been saving lives at sea and for this, they are facing charges of human trafficking with high prison sentences, instead of being honoured for the tremendous work they have done.

They appear before the court on Monday 7th of May, in Mytilene, Lesvos, and the proceedings will conclude on Wednesday. Accused are three fire-fighters from Spain, of the organisation Proem-Aid, also Salam Aldeen, and another person from Team Humanity. All of them arrived in Lesvos in late 2015 to do sea rescue, a time when arrivals were at there highest, and they were arrested on the 14th of January 2016 after returning from a search-mission at sea. Salam Aldeen, one of the accused, has been prevented from leaving Greece for many months and during this time has continued his support for those who suffer from the EU-borders on the shore. The boat of Team Humanity remained confiscated.

Die Lage im libyschen Flüchtlingscamp Zuwara ist katastrophal, warnen „Ärzte ohne Grenzen“. Sie appellieren an die internationale Gemeinschaft, den Flüchtlingen zu helfen.

Katastrophale Zustände in einem völlig überfüllten Internierungslager, so beschreibt Karline Kleijer, die Leiterin des medizinischen Programms in Libyen von der Hilfsorganisation „Ärzte ohne Grenzen“ die Lage in Zuwara. Dort befindet sich eins der Auffanglager für die meist afrikanischen Flüchtlinge und Migranten. Rund 800 Menschen seien in dem Lager seit Monaten festgehalten worden, sagt die Projektleiterin.

„Manche Leute waren dort seit mehr als fünf Monaten“, so Kleijer. „Auch Kinder und schwangere Frauen. Manche sind einen Monat lang nicht raus aus diesen schrecklichen Zellen gekommen, manche sogar noch länger nicht. Es gab Krätze. Die Menschen hatten zu wenig zu Essen und zu Trinken.“

Tommaso Besozzi, inviato de l’Europeo negli anni 50, avrebbe scritto: le uniche cose certe sono che i migranti continuano a imbarcarsi in Libia pagando gli scafisti e che continuano a naufragare o morire nel Mediterraneo. La cronaca è testarda e conferma questa certezza, in queste ore di ripresa dei flussi di barconi, di salvataggi, di sequestri. E dissequestri di navi umanitarie, tra Catania e Trapani, con le ong accusate di “intelligenza” con i trafficati di esseri umani. Gli ultimi naufraghi morti sono undici, bimbi e donne comprese, cinque giorni fa a poche miglia dalla Libia.

Mettere sotto inchiesta le ong e sigillare le loro navi non serve a cancellare queste certezze ed è contrario a tutte le convenzioni internazionali in materia di diritto umanitario, dalla dichiarazione dei diritti fondamentali dell’uomo in giù.

Infos zur Anhörung in Rom

Was ist passiert

Gestern, am 23.4., fand die Verhandlung unseres Einspruchs gegen die Beschlagnahme der IUVENTA vor dem Kassationsgericht in Rom statt.

Heute morgen gegen 9:30 Uhr wurde uns dann die Entscheidung des Gerichts mitgeteilt: Die Erste Strafkammer des Kassationsgerichts hat dem Einspruch von Jugend Rettet nicht stattgegeben und somit gegen eine unmittelbare Aufhebung der Beschlagnahme der IUVENTA entschieden. Eine genauere Begründung der Entscheidung steht derzeit noch aus. Wir bekommen in den nächsten 15 Tagen mitgeteilt auf welcher Grundlage diese Entscheidung basiert.

Aufgabe des Vereins wird es nun zum einen sein, weitere juristische Schritte abzuwägen und gegebenenfalls einzuleiten. So wurde bereits Kontakt zu Anwält*innen für Menschenrechte aufgenommen, um eine mögliche Verhandlung vor dem Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte zu evaluieren.

Immer wieder versuchen Menschen, über das Mittelmeer nach Europa zu kommen. Doch die Zahl der zivilen Retter im Meer ist deutlich gesunken.

Etwa 130 Migranten sitzen in einem Gummiboot. Es sind wie immer Schwangere darunter, Kinder und Babys. Sie wollen weg, endlich Folter, Vergewaltigungen, Hunger und Hoffnungslosigkeit in Libyen hinter sich lassen. Ein europäisches Rettungsschiff nähert sich. Und auch die libysche Küstenwache.

Mann für Mann, Frau für Frau, Kind für Kind wird verhandelt: Wer darf in Richtung Europa, wer muss wieder zurück in die libysche Hölle? Am Ende fährt das Schiff „Aquarius“ der deutsch-italienisch-französischen Organisation SOS Mediterranee mit 39 Frauen und Kindern Richtung Europa, der Rest hat es nicht geschafft.

As demonstrated in our report Blaming the Rescuers, since the end of 2016, a growing campaign of de-legitimisation and criminalisation has systematically targeted non-governmental organisations (NGOs) engaged in search and rescue in the Mediterranean. These organisations had courageously deployed their own rescue missions in a desperate attempt to fill the gap left by the EU and its member states’ decision to pull back from rescue at sea at the end of 2014.

In our report we analysed and countered the arguments used to fuel a “toxic narrative” against rescue NGOs, which emanated from EU agencies such as Frontex and different institutional bodies in Italy. While this campaign had remained largely on a discursive level, over the summer of 2017 it quickly escalated with the Italian government’s attempt to impose a “code of conduct” on rescue NGOs. An intense standoff ensued as several NGOs, from larger organisations such as Doctors without Borders to smaller ones such as the German Jugend Rettet (‘Youth Rescue’), refused to sign it before the announced deadline of 31 July 2017, claiming that the code would have threatened their activities at sea with requests that a leading legal scholar had described as „nonsensical“, „dishonest“ and „illegal“.

The Aquarius, chartered by SOS MEDITERRANEE and operated in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières, rescued a total of 458 people from overloaded unseaworthy boats in international waters off Libya, in three operations on Wednesday and Saturday. In addition, the Aquarius received a transfer of 79 people from the Italian Coast Guard on Saturday evening.

164 people were rescued from an overloaded rubber boat on Wednesday 18 April in international waters east of Tripoli. The rescue was carried out in cooperation with the NGO vessel Seafuchs, an Italian Navy helicopter and the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (IMRCC).

222 people were then rescued from an overcrowded wooden boat by the Aquarius in the morning of Saturday 21 April in international waters west of Tripoli. The operation was carried out in coordination with the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center.

72 people were then later rescued from a rubber boat in the same area in cooperation with the Astral operated by the NGO ProActiva, and the Moonbird patrol aircraft operated by the NGO Sea-Watch.

Ermittlungsrichter hebt die Beschlagnahme des Schiffs der spanischen NGO Proactiva auf, weil die Mannschaft der Open Arms keine andere Wahl gehabt hätte, als die Migrant*innen an Bord zu nehmen. Libyen ist nicht in der Lage, Migrant*innen aufzunehmen.

Il Gip di Ragusa, Giovanni Giampiccolo, rigettando la richiesta della Procura, ha disposto il dissequestro della nave della Ong spagnola Proactiva Open Arms, che è ormeggiata al porto di Pozzallo dal 18 marzo scorso dopo il salvataggio di 218 migranti. L’imbarcazione era stata sequestrata su disposizione della Procura distrettuale di Catania. Il Gip etneo, il 27 marzo, ha convalidato il provvedimento escludendo però il reato di associazione per delinquere: gli atti sono passati per competenza a Ragusa. Il provvedimento del Gip è esecutivo e sarà eseguito in giornata. Lo rendono noto i legali della Ong spagnola, gli avvocati Rosa Emanuela Lo Faro e Alessandro Gamberini. Sarà personale della squadra mobile della Questura di Ragusa e della Guardia costiera di Pozzallo a notificarlo all’amministratore giudiziario nominato dopo il sequestro.

Für die Staatsanwaltschaft in Turin stellt das Vorgehen französischer Grenzpolizisten gegen die italienische NGO Rainbow for Africa in Bardonecchia ein Verbrechen dar. Sie hat ein Ermittlungsverfahren einfgeleitet.

L’autorità doganale francese non aveva il diritto di fare il blitz di Bardonecchia. Questa è la conclusione cui è arrivata la procura di Torino dopo alcune settimane di indagine portate avanti dalla Digos. Lo ha annunciato il procuratore capo di Torino, Armando Spataro: „I locali dove i doganieri non potevano entrare nella sala assegnata alla Ong – ha spiegato- Abbiamo raccolto delle comunicazioni tra i responsabili delle due dogane dove il francese lamentava che non ci fosse più la disponibilità della stanza nella stazione di Bardonecchia. Questo dimostra che le forze dell’ordine francesi sapevano di non poter fare delle perquisizioni in quel modo“.
