Obwohl die Balkanroute weitgehend abgeriegelt ist, nutzen Iraker und Syrer den Weg über Afrika nach Italien offenbar kaum als Ausweichroute.

Trotz der geschlossenen Balkanroute entwickelt sich der Weg über das zentrale Mittelmeer von Afrika nach Italien bislang nicht als Ausweichroute für syrische und irakische Flüchtlinge nach Europa. Rund 47.600 Migranten trafen nach Angaben der Internationalen Organisation für Migration (IOM) bis Montag über diesen Seeweg in Italien ein – und damit in etwa so viele wie vor einem Jahr. Berücksichtigt man aber auch die anderen Mittelmeer-Routen, so wagten sich dieses Jahr bereits deutlich mehr Migranten auf den gefährlichen Seeweg: Etwa 204.000 Menschen erreichten so bislang Europa – das sind mehr als doppelt so viele wie im selben Zeitraum 2015, als bis Ende Mai knapp 88.000 Personen kamen.

Niger – Through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), IOM has recorded a total of 60,970 migrants passing through the transit towns of Arlit and Séguédine in the Agadez region of Niger between February and April 2016. Of this total, 44,890 were recorded leaving Niger, while 16,080 were migrants entering the country. Niger is a transit country for West African migrants travelling to and from Algeria and Libya.

The results of the flow monitoring during this period shows that minors represent 2.9 percent of the flow through Séguédine, which is an increase in the number of reported unaccompanied and accompanied minors heading towards Libya. The proportion of minors through Arlit is 9.4 percent, which includes those coming from and going to Algeria.

IOM: Niger Opens Migrant Information Office in Agadez

Niger – IOM Niger has inaugurated a migrant information office in the town of Agadez in the Sahara, a hub for West African migrants travelling to Libya, Algeria and Europe.  The office was formally opened by IOM Council Chair Ambassador Bertrand De Crombrugghe of Belgium.

The office will provide information and counselling to potential migrants, migrants in transit and returnees to Niger. The initiative is part of IOM’s Migrant Resource and Response Mechanism (MRRM) and is funded by the European Union and UK DFID.

It aims to improve migrants’ understanding of the risks and dangers associated with irregular migration and how to migrate in a safer and regular way. It also points migrants towards available legal migration channels and educates them on their rights and obligations, as well as those of States. It can also provide direct assistance. This week it identified and assisted a victim of trafficking from Nigeria.

Greece – At least 170,000 migrants and refugees have entered Europe along sea-borne routes through the first three months of 2016, according to calculations by the International Organization for Migration. This unofficial tally is based on arrivals to Italy reported late Thursday, as well as several hundred migrants and refugees believed to have entered Europe via Spanish waters during the course of 2016.

The 170,000 total is more than eight times the number – 20,700 – recorded through the first three months of 2015, a year when a record one million migrants and refugees crossed the Mediterranean.

Es ist eine menschliche Tragödie. Nach Angaben der Uno ertranken seit September 340 Kinder im Mittelmeer. Flüchtlingskommissar Grandi forderte Wege zur legalen Einreise.

Auf der Flucht nach Europa sind Uno-Angaben zufolge in den vergangenen sechs Monaten 340 Kinder im Mittelmeer ertrunken. „Diese tragischen Todesfälle sind unerträglich und müssen aufhören“, sagte der Uno-Flüchtlingskommissar Filippo Grandi in Genf. Es müssten endlich Wege zur legalen Einreise gefunden werden.

Greece – With more than a week left in the first month of 2016, IOM reports that deaths of migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean already make this the deadliest January on record. Deaths in the past 24 hours bring to at least 113 the total number of fatalities recorded, which is more than the past two Januaries combined, when 94 deaths were recorded – 12 in January 2014 and 82 last year.

With nearly 37,000 migrants and refugees now having arrived in Italy and Greece by sea in 2016, that figure is roughly 10 times 2015’s total on this date. For Greece and the Western Balkans, the increase is well over 20 times 2015’s total on this date.

Greece – IOM confirmed yesterday (21/12) that over a million irregular migrants and refugees arrived in Europe in 2015, mostly from Syria, Africa and South Asia.

Through the weekend, IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix – Flow Monitoring System counted 999,745 irregular arrivals across the Mediterranean, including migrants journeying by both land and sea to Greece, as well as to Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Malta and Cyprus.

Greece – IOM staff in Greece report a drastic decrease in the number of migrants and refugees crossing into Greece over the weekend. On Sunday, just 155 migrants arrived on the Greek islands by sea. Of these, 79 arrived in Kalymnos, 44 in Megisti and 24 in Lesvos. The remainder arrived in Chios and Kos.

The drop is significant given that, according to IOM estimates, some 100,000 migrants have crossed into Greece since the beginning of November – averaging around 4,500 crossings per day.

There have also been no migrant fatalities in Greek waters since November 17th, when the Hellenic Coast Guard recovered the remains of nine people – a man, four women and four children. Seven people were rescued and two young boys remain missing, presumed drowned. IOM reports that 585 people have perished on the Eastern Mediterranean migration route since the start of 2015.
