Die Lage der Flüchtlinge und Immigranten in Griechenland ist weiterhin ernst. Trotz der geringeren Anzahl an Neuankömmlingen aus der Türkei hat sich für die im Land Befindlichen kaum etwas geändert. Am Dienstag den 17. Mai wurden 16 Ankünfte auf Kos und vier auf Lesbos vom Vortag gemeldet. Im Land befanden sich in Lagern bei der morgendlichen Zählung nach offiziellen Angaben 54.496 Menschen.

Mehr als ein Jahr nach Beginn der Flüchtlingskrise plant der griechische Staat mit Geldern der EU zumindest, ab September die Schulausbildung für Flüchtlingskinder einzuführen. Noch soll das Unterfangen als Pilotprojekt in Zelten oder Räumen mit einer Kapazität für 150 Schüler durchgeführt werden.

Authorities try to convince refugees to move to official camps – a strategy to gradually close the Idomeni camp and divert attention?

Idomeni became the symbol of failed European refugee policies, showing the suffering and anger that closed borders produce every day. Thus, it is no surprise that the political leaders of European countries want the closure of this camp and hope to divert attention away from the inhumane situation in Idomeni. It is unfeasible to violently evict the 10.000 refugees who are still stuck at the Greek-Macedonian border, hoping for a possibility to cross and continue the hard journey. Therefore, the authorities are attempting to convince refugees to move away from Idomeni by presenting the newly erected official camps as a better alternative.

Realities in official camps contradicts message of humanitarism

The official camps are presented as an alternative to Idomeni, with better living conditions and better access to asylum, relocation or family reunification procedures. However, this message of humanitarianism, presented to the European public and those stuck at the Greek-Macedonian border is a farce. Moving Europe visited 14 of the official camps in order to compare the promises made with the reality in the camps, which are mostly managed by the Hellenic Army. To summarize: Living conditions are often worse than in Idomeni, and there is no adequate access to official information, asylum services, relocation procedures and/or family reunification. Thus, the camps are no solution: The suffering under inadequate conditions continues, and being brought to the camps moves people further away from the border rather than enabling them to travel on to where they want to. Many refugees want to return to Idomeni after a few days in one of the official camps.

Authorities are hoping to convince hundreds of refugees and migrants to leave the unofficial camps at Idomeni and Piraeus in the coming days, as tension builds up at other facilities.

The government aims to transport around 1,500 people from the camp at the Piraeus passenger terminal by the end of the week and said that four buses full of migrants had left Idomeni in northern Greece on Monday.

Das provisorische Flüchtlingscamp bekommt immer festere Strukturen. Mehr und mehr Flüchtlinge kommen hierher – auch die Schleuser.

Es wirkt wie ein Ritual. Jeden Morgen kommen drei, vier Busse nach Idomeni. Sie parken am Anfang der geteerten Straße zum Flüchtlingslager und warten. Am Nachmittag fahren sie wieder weg – meistens leer. Sollten sie einmal einige wenige Passagiere mitführen, dann sind es oftmals Familien, die sich erhoffen, in den staatlichen Flüchtlingscamps der Region bessere Bedingungen vorzufinden. Diese wenigen Abgänge stehen aber in keinem Vergleich zu den vielen Zugängen. Das Flüchtlingscamp breitet sich im Tagesrhythmus nach allen Seiten hin aus. Einzige Barriere ist der mazedonische Grenzzaun. Nicht nur, dass auf immer mehr Feldern Zelte aufgeschlagen werden. Das Lager bekommt zunehmend festere Strukturen – trotz staatlicher Abstinenz.

Before being deported to Turkey, the last refugees must first be brought to a detention center. But they don’t want to go. Some are threatening to commit suicide. Panagiotis Kouparanis reports from Lesbos.

Although one out of six people on the island of Lesbos is a migrant or a refugee, they’ve disappeared from sight. They could be seen everywhere up until two weeks ago. But everything changed on March 20 with the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal, which led to their deportation onto the mainland. Newcomers – barely having left their boats – are now being transported directly by police buses to the Moria detention center.

Mit dem Inkrafttreten des sogenannten EU-Türkei-Deals hat sich die Lage der Refugees auf den griechischen Inseln massiv verschlechtert. Die meisten von ihnen warten momentan, eingesperrt in sogenannten Hotspots, auf ihre Rückführung in die Türkei. Denn der Flüchtlingspakt zwischen der Europäischen Union und der Türkei sieht vor, dass all jene Schutzsuchenden, die erst nach dem 20. März 2016 nach Griechenland gekommen sind, in die Türkei zurückgeführt werden.

Im Gegenzug bekommt die Türkei Finanzhilfe in Milliardenhöhe und die EU verpflichtet sich, für jeden zurückgeschobenen Refugee, einen syrischen Schutzsuchenden direkt aus der Türkei in die Europäische Union zu hohlen.

Doch nicht nur für die Refugees selbst hat sich die Situation seit Inkrafttreten des Deals am 20. März verschlechtert. Auch für NGOs und unabhängige freiwillige Helferinnen und Helfer ist es seither schwieriger geworden, mit den Flüchtlingen in Kontakt zu treten und ihnen Hilfe anzubieten. Wir haben uns mit einem Salzburger unterhalten, der seit mehreren Monaten in Griechenland lebt und momentan auf der griechischen Insel Chios als Flüchtlingshelfer tätig ist.

The police presence on Greece’s Aegean islands and at Idomeni on its northern border is to be strengthened after clashes between refugees and migrants, as well as authorities, and fears that tensions will rise as the return of people to Turkey gets under way next week.

Police chiefs held an emergency meeting Thursday after clashes at the refugee center at the port of Piraeus involving dozens of refugees and migrants and incidents at island hot spots. A decision was taken to send 150 officers to Lesvos, Samos and Chios. Another 105 policemen will be assigned to the Kilkis police directorate, which is responsible for maintaining law and order at the Idomeni camp.

An official at the Citizens’ Protection Ministry told Kathimerini that authorities would draw up a new operations plan in the next few days that would make even more officers available for policing hot spots on the Aegean islands.

Seit Ende März dürfen Flüchtlinge auf Lesbos ein Registrierungslager nicht mehr verlassen. Während eines Besuchs von US-Vize-Außenministerin Heather Higginbottom kam es jetzt zu Protesten.

Auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos haben am Montag dutzende Flüchtlinge gegen ihre Internierung im Registrierungslager Moria protestiert. Während eines Besuchs von US-Vize-Außenministerin Heather Higginbottom forderten sie lautstark „Freiheit!“ und riefen, „wo bleiben die Menschenrechte?“ Die Flüchtlinge dürfen das Registrierungslager seit dem 20. März nicht mehr verlassen.

Die Änderungen im Umgang mit den Flüchtlingen wurden von mehreren Hilfsorganisationen scharf kritisiert. In Moria würden Menschen eingesperrt, die „keinerlei Verbrechen begangen“ hätten, kritisierte der Griechenland-Beauftragte der Organisation Oxfam, Giovanni Riccardi Candiani.

Die Polizei verstärkt ihre Einsatzkräfte im griechischen Elendslager Idomeni. Flüchtlinge demonstrieren – und fürchten eine gewaltsame Räumung des Camps.

Die Lage im griechischen Elendslager Idomeni an der Grenze zu Mazedonien ist angespannt. Gerüchte überschlagen sich: Werden Flüchtlinge einen Grenzdurchbruch versuchen? Wird die Polizei das Camp in Kürze gewaltsam räumen? Oder doch die Grenze geöffnet? Rund 1500 Flüchtlinge demonstrieren am Sonntag auf den Bahngleisen, die Polizei verstärkt ihre Einsatzkräfte und riegelt die Zufahrtsstraßen ab.

Die Migranten versammelten sich am Sonntag um die Mittagszeit vor dem mazedonischen Zaun und forderten lautstark die Öffnung der Grenze für Flüchtlinge. „Wir haben gehört, die Grenze geht heute auf“, sagte ein aus Syrien stammender Flüchtling im griechischen Rundfunk. Viele Menschen hielten weiße Tücher in der Hand, um zu symbolisieren, dass sie friedlich unterwegs sind, wie das Staatsfernsehen ERT berichtete.
