Athens court rules more than 18 months detention of migrants is illegal!

The appeal against detention that was brought to court by the Greek Council for Refugees is of broader significance as it was the first case of its kind against the “endless detention duration. The decision 2255/23.5.2014 says that the endless detention defined as measure of compulsory stay in a detention centre by the states Legal Council Opinion 44/2014 is not according to law.

On Friday (2 May) over 150 detainees in Harmondsworth migration prison occupied the main courtyard in a sit down protest and began a mass hunger strike. On Monday (5 May) supporters held solidarity noise demos outside Harmondsworth and simultaneously at Dungavel (Scotlans). Yesterday evening (Tuesday 6 May) protests started to spread to Colnbrook and Brook House migration prisons.

Statt der Bürgermeisterin von Lampedusa spricht Giacomo Sferlazzo an der 1.-Mai-Kundgebung. Der Aktivist setzt sich für Migranten auf Lampedusa ein […] Giacomo Sferlazzo. Der 34-Jährige springt an der diesjährigen 1.-Mai-Kundgebung als Redner ein, nachdem die Bürgermeisterin von Lampedusa ihren Auftritt hatte absagen müssen.

Sferlazzo war ursprünglich als Musiker eingeladen worden. In der Tradition italienischer Barden singt er melancholische Lieder von Freiheit und Liebe. Doch auch er kann aus erster Hand erzählen, wie es ist, tagtäglich mit dem Leid von Tausenden von Migranten konfrontiert zu sein – er ist auf Lampedusa aufgewachsen.

Announcement of new rule on detention duration causes wave of protests

Protests in the big detention centres after declaration of an extension of the detention duration to more than 18 months

Today the authorities of the mass detention centres in Drama/ Parenesti, Komotini, Corinth and Xanthi informed the detained sans-papiers that they might stay even longer than 18 months, up to 24 months, or 36 or for an endless period if they do not co-operate with the authorities according to a new rule. In fact co-operation means here “voluntary return”. The only alternative is an asylum application.

The Sri Lankan woman’s husband has been forced to bring their 18-month-old daughter to the police station several times a day to be breast-fed.

Des centaines de migrants et de demandeurs d’asile sont couramment placés en détention par les autorités chypriotes en charge de l’immigration ; ils restent détenus dans des conditions proches de la prison pendant de longues périodes dans l’attente de leur expulsion. Parmi eux figurent des réfugiés syriens et des femmes séparées de leurs jeunes enfants.
